It is essential to approach decreasing a negative behavior from a skills acquisition perspective. A negative behavior serves a function and we need to teach a new way to get access to that same function. Kate Patterson, a BCBA with both school and home-based experience, goes through the whole process of utilizing replacement behaviors.
