"If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable."
    That’s a line from Seneca—an OG high-performance philosopher.
Seneca’s point is that setting goals is key.
Without em’ you can work like crazy, grind all day and spin your wheels to no end.
But setting any old goals won’t cut it.
You’ve got to set the right goals, and set goals the right way.
The good news is there’s some super solid neuroscience that shows us how to do this.
On this call, myself and Steven Kotler and our performance coach Dr. Brent Hogarth are discussing the science of goal setting as it relates to kicking off 2021.
Dr. Brent Hogarth has earned a Master's in Sport Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He currently resides in Vancouver, Canada.
He is an expert in training flow-state, mindfulness, and self-control for both sport and corporate athletes.
You’re going to love it. Here’s just some of what we’ll be covering:
We will discuss why the “R” in SMART goals destroys people's results.
You will learn how big you should make your goals (and how big is too big).
We will understand the 3 types of goals and how to set and achieve each type.
And you will also be surprised to learn why NOT aiming big is physically bad for you.
So make sure to stay until the end to soak up all the goodness.---If you order Steven's new book, The Art of Impossible, right now, you’ll get $1.500 USD of free bonuses immediately dropped into your inbox. They include secret chapters he has never released, masterclasses on key skills to help you jack up motivation, heighten creativity, and accelerate learning. You’ll also get an entirely free training to help you fight distraction and spend more time in flow. So click the link here, snag yourself a copy of The Art of Impossible, and let’s get after it. 👉 https://www.theartofimpossible.com/

    ---
Our guest today is Mark Matthews, an Australian professional big wave surfer with a truly extraordinary story.
On 25 October 2016 Matthews was working on a photographic shoot on the south coast of New South Wales when he was injured. He was being double towed in 6–8 foot waves when he was caught in a wave and landed feet first on a reef.
He suffered, " a broken leg, a dislocated knee, two snapped ligaments, major nerve damage, and an artery that tore lengthways, filling his leg with blood" and he was fortunate not to have his leg amputated.
He has deconstructed, fine-tuned, and personalized emotion and resilience techniques to successfully strengthen one’s mindset and sustain long term performance.
These techniques have helped him win an unprecedented three consecutive Oakley Big Wave Awards and cement him as one of the best big waves surfers in the world.
You are in for a treat as we discuss how his learnings can be applied in everyday life and business.

--- In the last couple of weeks, we have seen our community become super excited about Steven’s new book, the Art of Impossible.
It is coming out in less than a month and this is why we have decided to go deep on the topic of achieving the impossible on this podcast once again.
This is a turning tables episode, where Steven is interviewed by Marc Champagne from the podcast Behind The Human.
This interview kicks us off with Steven explaining how he got into flow research via action sports but then he highlights that peak performance goes way beyond action sports. It goes into innovation, companies - and punk rock.
From there Steven shares how his personal history is intertwined with the advancement in flow science and how he ultimately concluded that we have to get down to neurobiology if we want to understand flow, and quite frankly, peak performance and achieving the impossible in general.
Make sure to stay until the end where Steven shares his personal peak performance routine.
Marc has been a great host and asked interesting and detailed questions to Steven. I am sure you will love this episode.---

In the space of health consciousness, we tend to talk about nutrition, fitness, recovery, and sleep. But here at the Collective, we also consider sleep and recovery the foundation of your performance.
If you treat your life like a corporate athlete, then you want to make sure to train and rest like an athlete.
So, very early on in the conversation with Dr. Iliff we talk about accumulating sleep debt, jet lag, and sleep deprivation and what that means for the cleansing of the brain - or lack thereof.

  • Why Learning Is At The Core Of Peak Performance — Steven Kotler | Flow Research Collective Radio

Today, I am interviewing our very own Steven Kotler on learning. It is an intimate fireside chat where Steven talks about the right mindset for learning as well as truth filters.
The first thing we cover is that the foundation for learning is having a growth mindset.
The growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way — in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments — everyone can change and grow through application and experience.
Having a “fixed mindset” on the other hand alters our underlying neurobiology, making the acquisition of new information exceptionally difficult.
So before we can begin learning, we need to believe that learning is possible.
Secondly, you will learn what truth filters are and how you can apply them.
What really matters is that you create a rigorous truth filter when you learn. You can’t learn and grow on bad information.
Plus, there are performance benefits to consider. Being able to trust the information you’re working with lowers anxiety, doubt, and cognitive load—which are three things that loosen our focus, hamper our ability to get into flow, and block learning itself.
It is safe to say: This is a truly exciting episode!

Dr. Sarkis is a licensed psychologist, writer and performance consultant living in Boston, USA. Dr. Sarkis emphasizes collaboration, partnership, and personal empowerment.
Dr. Sarkis earned her master’s in psychology from Boston College and doctorate from George Washington University.
She approaches psychological growth and change from an integrative perspective, where she blends her strong psychodynamic and insight-oriented training with more traditionally behavioral and mind/body techniques to help patients foster insight and access motivation.
Dr. Sarkis has studied extensively the use of mindfulness, functional medicine, hormones, positive psychology, and how food, medicine, and mood are interconnected.
She integrates these various modalities to bring you a modern interpretation of how to optimize human potential.
