しかし、目の前に現れた冬は、庭の木々を指差しながら、その間違いを正す。

そして、私の元へは「貧」が、「老」が現れる。

どれも私が想像していたものとは全く違った。

Winter comes to visit me.

I had thought that Winter was a poor old woman.

But when Winter appears in front of me, she points to the trees in the garden and corrects my mistake.

Then, the "poor" and the "old" appear to me.

All of them were completely different from what I had imagined.

崔は下男に命じ、女を送り届けることにした。

女の家は、林の中にある別荘のような建物であった。

On his way back on horseback with his servant, he saw a woman walking unsteadily.

SAI ordered his servant to take the woman home.

The woman's house was a villa-like building in the woods.

Suddenly, in the shadow of a cherry tree, he saw the figure of a woman.

The woman had come from Hamamatsu to live with her aunt, but she had already moved away and was at a loss.

維新の少し前。

土佐藩の藩士・小坂丹治は火縄銃をもって、山に狩りへ出た。

松の梢に鶴が止まっていた。ちょうど撃ち良いところであった。

鶴を狩るのは禁止されていたが、山の中には誰もいない。

鶴を狙って火縄をつけた。銃声の後、確かな手応えを感じたが、鶴は無傷であった。

小坂丹治は、行きしなに赤ん坊とも猿ともつかぬ不気味な生き物に遭遇したことを思い出した。

Just before the Meiji Restoration.

Tanji Kosaka, a feudal lord of the Tosa Clan, went hunting in the mountains with a firearm.

A crane was perched on the treetop of a pine tree. He was just in time to shoot it.

It was forbidden to hunt cranes, but there was no one else in the mountain.

I aimed at the crane and attached the fire rope. After the shot, he felt a definite response, but the crane was unharmed.

Tanji Kosaka remembered that he had encountered an eerie creature, neither a baby nor a monkey, on his way.

古道具屋の大井金五郎は、古道具の入った大きな風呂敷包を背にして金町の家へ帰って来た。

女房に中身を見せようと桐の箱を開けた途端、中に入っていた人形の頭が笑った気がして驚いた。

以来、金五郎は狂ったように暴れるようになり、女房は途方に暮れた。

Kinugoro Oi, an antique shopkeeper, returned to his house in Kanamachi with a large furoshiki wrapping cloth filled with antique tools on his back.

As soon as he opened the paulownia box to show the contents to his wife, he was surprised to see the head of the doll inside laughing.

Since then, Kinugoro had been rampaging like a madman, and his wife was at her wits' end.

洋次郎は、銀座に行くとツリカゴという喫茶店に出入りするようになった。

ツリカゴはボックス席のしっかりしたテーブルがあり、思索を巡らすのにちょうどよかった。

その男――原と自分でいっていた――は、人より無口な洋次郎にとっては随分雄弁に色々と話しかけて、洋次郎自身一寸気味悪くさえ思われた。

Whenever he went to Ginza, Yojiro began to go to a coffee shop called Tsurikago.

Tsurikago had solid tables with box seats, which was perfect for contemplation.

The man, who called himself Hara, talked to Yojiro so eloquently that Yojiro felt a little creeped out by him.

　However, as Yojiro listened to the man, he began to understand why he was talking so much.
