さる天皇の御代に、竜苑寺という寺があった。

その寺に、一人の僧があって、法華経をよく読誦し、その講義をすることを、毎日の日課としていた。

そこに竜がやってきた。竜は法華経を聞き、講義を聞き、心を打たれて、人の姿となって毎日聴聞した。

僧は竜に尋ねた。「そなたは、いつもやって来て講義を聞いておられる。いったいどなたなのですか」

竜は本意を答え、僧は快く迎え入れ、二人は親しく交際するようになった。
