There could be many reasons someone has a gap in their resume

  1. Laid off
  2. Company folded
  3. Person left before finding something new
  4. Contract ended
  5. Needed to take time off to care for a family member
  6. Caring for young child
  7. Medical reasons
  8. Addiction recovery
  9. Relocation
  10. Start your own company
  11. Traveling
  12. Spiritual / religious reasons
  13. Personal development

    14. Impacts:

    1. Could be viewed as negative
    2. People could think you couldn't find a job
    3. Could give you an opportunity to re-charge
    4. Opportunity to re-evaluate priorities
    5. Time to learn something new
    6. Start / finish new projects
    7. Start your business
    8. Part time work
    9. Changed careers / industries
    10. Opportunity to pick up contracting work or temp work
    11. Volunteering

      12. Tips:

      1. Explain the gap, keep it short, be confident
      2. Keep it positive
      3. Provide productive things you did during the time off
      4. Networking
      5. Resume - try using years vs mm/yyyy format
      6. Don't dwell on the gap
      7. Be honest and transparent
      8. Prepare to discuss but don't focus on it
