This week on the Grappling Rewind Podcast we talk about the most historic BJJ Ass Beating from our favorite high-level competitors.  Taking a historic look at What’s Beef when it comes to bad blood matches, and generally overmatched competition at the highest levels. 

In this weeks news segment we talk Fight island UFC 249 being cancelled robbing us of the opportunity to see a real life Bloodsport.

In the main segment of the show we talk about when keeping it real goes wrong in BJJ chronicling some classis BJJ beat downs in the world of Professional MMA and BJJ. 

We talk about the build up and results of Nick the tooth vs. Joe Lauzon and how this fight week matchup came to be, and then was subsequently removed from the internet.  Then we talk about Nick the Tooth vs. Matt Serra that also ended in similar fashion.  We talk about some history about the beef between all the parties involved and the technical beat down that ensued as a result. 

In our next match we talk about ADCC and grappling legend Marcello Garcia vs. Ben Askren in training footage going back to 2009 or earlier.  We talk about how good Marcello is in comparison to the submission grappling of then wrestling stand out Ben Askren.  We talk about the submission grappling “levels to this” understanding the huge accomplishments of both men 

In the next match we go back to 2008 with the viral match between Andre Galvao vs. the fake black belt took place in one of the most legendary beatings in sanctioned competition featuring an upset Andre Galavo going off in competition against an overmatched opponent who attempted to knee reap him during competition. All set to the beat of some classic So-Cal Hip Hop. 

Continuing the trend of beatings for the sake of proving a point we take a look at Ralek Gracie vs Gordon Ryan at the final Metamoris a match that we covered on the show back in 2017 we talk about some of the historic context of this match.  The goal of the event and how it played out as well as the bet between Gordon and Danaher that lead to the triangle finish at a very specific time in the match.  

To cap off this episode we talk about the most notorious match in BJJ history Masahiko Kimura vs. Hélio Gracie.  A match that was reported to have taken place in front of 20,000 people including the president of Brazil at the time way back in 1951.  It is because of this match that BJJ adopted the name Kimura for the figure 4 arm lock.  We talk about the finish and some other historic matches that took place around this time.

This week on the show Maine and Emil recap 5 great matches from BJJ yesteryear, and recap the weeks BJJ news.

In the news section of the show we talk about Marcello Garcia potentially returning to ADCC in either 2021 or 2023 and his interview where he made the announcement.

In the Historical match recap we take a look at Marcello Garcia vs Ricco Rodriguez at ADCC 2005 we talk about Marcello’s back take and slam that he eats on his way to heel hook victory over the giant.  

We talk about how the Kron Gracie vs Marcus Alameda Buchecha at Pans 2012 that saw kneebar entries from Buchecha and Kron and we talk about how the pacing and areas this match were fought is great for tape study.   We talk about entries and gripping sequences and gripping with a purpose that was on display in this match.  

In the next match we recap Garry Tonon vs Rousimar Palhares at Polaris 3 we talk about the change in leg lock meta over the years, and some of the historical context behind this match, as well as the lead up to this match.  Maine and Emil discuss the various high points of the match and the variety of entries we see from both entires.  We also discuss the visible differences in entries between both grapplers and how the styles are suited to each grappler.  Plus the fact that this match is one of the best grappling matches of all time. 

In the next matches we discuss the 2012 and 2014 matches between Andre Galvao vs Rodolfo Vieira at world pro this match sees changes in both grapples games but much of the same, dynamic passing from Rodolfo and active work from the bottom from Andre.  We discuss combination passing and how styles of matchups change and stay the same over the years.  

In the outro of the show we tease next weeks show where we will talk about the greatest BJJ beat downs on film and give us an excuse to talk about some of the most famous prolonged one sided matches in BJJ history.  

We also talk about training and working out in quarantine and our plans for after quarantine.

This week on another quarantine remote recording of the Grappling Rewind Maine and Emil break down and recap Submission Underground 12 Headlined by Craig Jones vs. Kevin Casey.   Plus the weeks COVID -19 BJJ news.

In the news section we talk about Mikey Musumeci and Tammy Musumeci leaving Caio Terra Association for an unknown team or affiliation seemingly out of the blue. We talk about some instructional giveaways.  The State of Maryland going shelter in place with Coronavirus.  We also talk about the cursed UFC matchup between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov being cancelled due to global pandemic after being booked a 5th time.  We also talk about Jon Jones latest run in with the law and his Tequila and firearm fueled arrest.  

In the recap section of the show we talk about the main event and co-main event of Submission Underground 12 (SUG) that saw the Australian leg locker Craig Jones heel hook his way to victory over Kevin Casey in under 3 minutes.  Maine and Emil talk about some of the stand up and escape sequences in this match and Jones textbook tested entry that saw him walk away with the finish.  In the co-main event we break down 

Ben Egli Mir lock from the triangle position win over Jake Ellenberger.  We talk about the excellent use of the Kimura trap, how the transition for the finish happened, and Maine talks about how this particular sub put the opponent between a rock and a hard place working as a combo threat.  

We also talk about the event as a whole and how surreal it was to watch well produced grappling with no audience, and other people in attendance.  

After that we move into the planning section of the show talking about some proposed upcoming content for the Grappling Rewind and ask the listeners of the show what matches or what content that they want to hear on the show.  Maine and Emil propose a number of topics including David vs. Goliath matches and times that the little guys have won in the absolute and what techniques they used to win.

We discuss the possibility of breaking down X choke from mount AKA Roger Gracie’s insane run at worlds.  We talk about covering more historic matches like we had done in the past.  We also discuss Kyra Gracie championship run at 3 different ADCC events.  

In the outro of the show Maine and Emil talk plans for shelter in place and how much training Maine is doing at his house.

This week on the show Maine, Josh, and Zak sit down for a remote episode of the show and talk about some classic BJJ matches.  We also sit down with David Aguzzi the CEO of Grappling Industries and talk about how the Coronavirus has affected the promotion.  We also talk about the promotions plans after COVID-19 and some history behind the promotion, how certain big superfights came to be, and the reason for Grappling Industries worlds in 2020. 

In the historic recap section of the show the hosts break down 5 classic matches, Marcelo Garcia vs. Fernando Terere back in 2003 that saw SLX on display, and a great display of gamesmanship and technique from both players.  

We then break down Roger Gracie vs Jacare from the World Finals in 2004 that saw Jacare get his arm broken and continue to win the match.  We talk about the technique behind the armbar and some rule changes that arose from this match, particularly how stalling has changed over the years, potentially as a result of this match. 

In our select open weight match we talk Marcus Almeida "Buchecha" vs. Rodolfo Vieira 2013 Worlds BJJ Black Belt Final we talk about the change in heavyweight meta, how Buchecha is able to sweep from a kneebar entry, and the pace he is able to keep, and how that changed in the next generation of heavyweight grapplers.  

After that we talk about Rafa Mendes Vs Rubens Charles Cobrinha Worlds 2014 Finals one of the many matches in this rivalry a match that ended 10-8 and showcased dynamic 50/50, lapel work, and the old 50/50 meta of that era of BJJ. 

We round out the show with the 2015 match between Michelle Nicolini and Mackenzie Dern at the worlds.  We talk about the style of younger grapplers and relentless offence.  We talk about how Dern used her entries into leg positions to force exchanges, and how her relentlessness eventually lead to the finish in the match. 

After that we sit down with David Aguzzi and talk about all things Grappling Industries.  Maine asks about how certain superfights were made.  David talks about his strategy for moving into new territories.  We talk about Keenan Vs. and the hype surrounding the match, and some of the thought behind why certain matches are made in certain regions.  David talks about how COVID -19 has affected upcoming events and how the promotion is selling lifetime passes to compete in their events.  David talks about providing for his staff in this time and how they are going to use this time to improve the promotion.  We also talk about his plans and roadmap for Grappling Industries worlds that had been scheduled for Dallas later in the year.

In the outro section of the show the hosts talk about what they are planning to do this week while quarantined.

On this special Coronavirus quarantine show the team Maine, Emil and, Josh talk about how coronavirus COVID -19 has shutdown the BJJ community completely, and left Grappling Rewind with nothing to cover.  

This show is unlike any other show we have done and the normal event coverage will return once the world recovers from COVID-19. 

So for this special episode we take some listener questions and just talk about BJJ and our lives in general, let off some stories, and char about the lives of the Grappling Rewind staff and how they got into BJJ.

Maine, Josh, and Emil share how they got into BJJ.  Their first days, and how the show came to be.  We talk about interesting historic moments that we have been a part of in BJJ.  As well as talk about some content we are looking to produce in the future while the world is shut down.

In the news section of the show Maine and Emil talk about IBJJF banning the BJJ Globetrotters Affiliation, how this affects many of the grapplers in the sport so close to Pans, and how it also affects some world medalists.  We also talk a bit about Beltchecker.com and possible links between the two.  We also laugh at Gordon cleaning up the absolute division at the Arnold Classic this weekend. 

In the recap section we talk about Fight to Win 137 in Denver, Co Headlined by Lucas Barbosa vs. Roberto Jimenez that ended in a stunning armbar and earned the two grapplers Fight Of The Night honors.  We talk about the veteran passing from Hulk, and some similarities that we seen between Nicholas Meregali and Roberto Jimenez in both the way the throw up submissions and in their approach in matches. We talk about Michael Liera defeats Marcio Andre Decision for the Welterweight title, and Jake Watson last second omaplata attempt over Rudson Mateus that allowed him to take the judges decision over Rudson.  We also talk about the Submission of the night for the Black Belts, some other stand out matches; and the highlight matches from the rest of the card.  

In the preview section of the show we preview Third Coast Grappling 4 that has changed significantly since the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) This card has turned into locals only and is a showcasing some of the best talent in the Houston area.  We talk about Texas Grapplers William Tackett, his brother Andrew Tackett, and his 1 vs. 3 match where his opponents have to submit him to earn $1500, we talk about Lucas Valentes matchup, and more.

In the preview of Fight to Win 138 in Dallas Texas, we talk about Raphael Lovato Jr staying active in the BJJ scene since his retirement from MMA, and relinquishment of the Bellator title. We take a look at Lovato’s matchup with Vinicius "Trator" Ferreira.

We preview Matheus Gabriel vs. Gianni Grippo, and take a look at what Gianni has been competing in as of recently.  Including some IBJJF opens and absolute classes.  We look at Ygao de Souza vs Jaime Canuto, who Emil thinks is a different guy, as well as the matches from Third Coast that have been added to this card including Vagner Rocha, vs Mike Perez, as well as Oliver Taza, and Ethan Crelinsten being added to this card. 

In the outro section of the show we talk about the possibility of IBJJF Pans 2020 being cancelled.  As well as Maine having to drop a bunch of weight and diet for the next few weeks to make weight.

This week on the show Maine and Emil talk about the BJJ Fanatics 170 GP Gordon Ryan Vs pat Downey and GrappleFest 8 Headlined by Thor Vs Adam Wardzinski, and featuring the Rutolo Brothers, and preview Fight to Win 137.

In the news section we talk about Mikey Musumeci vs Erberth Santos that is apparently back on.  We talk about BJJ Stars and its huge lineup.  Roberto Jiminez Vs Felipe Andrew at the KC Open. As well as talk about Eddie Bravo and the OT event he has announced.  We also get some late breaking news that Sub Stars is unable to pay their athletes from the event earlier in February.  

In the recap section of the show we talk about GrappleFest 8 Headlined by Jon Thor Blank Vs Adam Wardzinski, that saw Jon finish Adam with a quick heel hook after inverting under on the legs for the -90kg title.  

We talk about the completeness of Dante Leon game Vs Tye Ruotolo that saw the Canadian take a unanimous decision victory over the Atos Prodigy.  We talk about how to handle positional resets when you go out of bounds in a sub in a sub only format. 

We talk about Kade Ruotolo Vs Ash Williams that saw lots of positional exchanges and leg pin passing from Ruotolo, as well as some Toe Hold attempts from the Atos Purple belt that required Ash to change position.  

We also talk about a few more of the main card matches and go through the undercard results.

In our recap of the BJJ Fanatics 170 GP headlines by Gordon Ryan and Pat Downey in two matches one under ADCC rules and the other in freestyle rules.  We talk about the finishing sequence that Pat Downey quit during and the potential through process behind Gordon Ryan in this match, as well as the 20 second sequence that Say Pat Tech Fall Ryan in the freestyle match.  

In the 170 tournament recap we are impressed by Oliver Taza and his heel hok finishes over PJ Barch, and John Combs, as well as talk about his wrist lock finish of Ethan Crelinsten on OT of the finals.

This week on the show we talk about Gordon Ryan Vs. Aaron “Tex” Johnson at Sub Stars, Cyborg Vs. Lovato and most of this stacked card.  We recap Submission Underground 11, and preview GrappleFest 8.

In the news section of the show we talk about Leandro Lo now being the 5-division world champ in IBJJF, and Mikey Musumeci having his match with Erberth Santos announced then cancelled. We talk about AOJ splitting from Atos and some marquee BJJ matchups.  

In the recap section of the show we go deep into the Sub Stars card starting with Gordon Ryan Vs. Tex Johnson we talk about Gordon’s meta game and how his passing was implemented in the match.  We talk about an entry into a leg and heel hook position from Tex and what Gordon did differently than Felipe Pena to avoid the sub and subsequently pass off of the attempt.  We also talk about how this finish and set up for the finish is very similar to the pathways that we have seen Gordon travel before when looking for the same sub.  

We break down Roberto Cyborg Abreu versus Rafael Lovato Jr. that saw Cyborgs wrestling and takedown, and top game on display against the Lovato.  We talk about some of the history between these two and this matchup, and how Cyborg has been looking better and better recently at the top of the BJJ game.  

In our recap of Nick Rodriguez vs Roosevelt Sousa we talk about the development of Nicks passing game, and Maine gives credit to more of the technical pieces that he had overlooked in his back take game.  We talk about the position reset and the placement of the arms and legs, that possibly changed and were a point of controversy. 

In the Luiza Monteiro vs. Maggie Grindatti match we break down the ever-elusive heel hook in the Gi in a pro match.  This is one of BJJ unicorn submissions that we rarely ever see as its banned in almost every rule set, we break down how this changes attacks in the gi and why its cool to see.  

Keeping with the theme of leg locks in the Gi in Fellipe Andrew vs Patrick Gaudio we talk about the quick footlock that saw Fellipe take the win over Gaudio. 

We also break down the prelim matches including  Jasmine Rocha vs Nathalia Santoro, Roberto Jimenez vs Dan Martinez, Nicky Ryan vs JZ Cavalcante looking like a match of Gordons from 2015, Vagner Rocha match and more.  

In the recap of Submission Underground 11 (SUG 11) we talk about the tag team match between Nick  Rodriguez Craig Jones, Vinny Magalhaes, and Kyle Boehm.  We talk strategy and game plan and the reaction of the crowd.  We also talk about Mike Perry and Al Iaquinta having a really fun to watch match.

Maine and Emil talk about the weeks pro BJJ events and the weeks Pro BJJ news.

In the news section the hosts talk about the interviews with the fighters at Kasai that are out of the Grappling Rewind YouTube page.  We talk about Kaynan Duarte receiving a USADA Doping Suspension that will see his retroactive suspension extend for the next 4 months.  We talk about Gordon Ryan 100K 5 fight deal with Third Coast Grappling an unprecedented contract in professional submission grappling.  We also speak with Ryan McGuire CEO of Third Coast Grappling about the historic contract in an interview after the news section. 

We also talk about Raphael Lovato Jr vacating his Bellator Title, due to an ongoing brain condition.

In the recap of Para Bellum Quintet 3 we talk about the 4 team tournament between the 10th Planet Montreal, Tristar, Detroit Jiu-Jitsu, and Cicero Costha Jiu-Jitsu teams.  We talk about the Tristar vs Detroit BJJ semi finals team matches that saw amazing action from both teams talking mostly about Javad Mahjoub vs David Garmo that resulted in a DQ win for Garmo.  Then we move on to the ever technical submission battle between David Garmo and Oliver Taza, then Oliver Taza vs Mohamed Hoballah, and the finals match between Ethan Crelinsten and Khalil Fadlallah that saw Ethan sink in a tight RNC for the team win.  

In the preview section of the show we talk about Fight to Win 136 in Los Angeles, CA headlined by a Black Belt Heavyweight No-Gi Title match between Kaynan Duarte  and Tractor Vinicius Ferriera.  The co main on this event is a bamtamweight 135lbs Black Belt Gi Title between Gabbi Mccomb and Jena Bishop.  Also on the card is 2019 IBJJF No-Gi world champ Johnny Tama vs Edwin Najmi, Michael Liera jr, Baret Yoshida, and tons of black belts as every California card is stacked with.  This event has so many black belt matches we couldn’t event count them all.  

In the outro of the show we talk about Guardian BJJ opening up in Baltimore MD, and its non- Profit goals.  As well as Maine possibly getting back into competition.
