Korean Google engineer vows to improve search

A senior Korean software developer working for Google pledged to help develop a search engine/ that provides better and accurate results. In Korea， Naver is the dominant search engine， while Google is less used. “The Web is like a living creature. It evolves as people`s ideas and thoughts change，” said Kim, a senior software engineer. “That means relentless research is necessary for developers for better services.”

구글에서 일하는 한국인 소프트웨어 개발자가 더 정확하고 나은 결과를 제공하는 검색엔진 개발을 돕겠다고 말했다. 한국에서는 네이버가 지배적인 검색엔진인 반면， 구글은 사용빈도가 낮다. “웹은 생명체와 같다. 사람들의 아이디어와 생각이 변화함에 따라 진화한다”고 김 엔지니어는 말했다. “더 나은 서비스를 위해서는 개발자들의 끊임없는 연구가 필요하다는 것을 의미한다”

The allegations about his mismanagement aside， the biggest strike against Lee is that he started his term under former president Lee Myung-bak. “We thought the chairman would be able to carry out his term， but it looks like we were mistaken since the plot for ousting Lee seems to be thickening，” said one source close to KT who was unable to mask his disappointment over how Lee had become an apparent political target.

According to the Global Times, the surprise attack happened when the woman, surnamed Liu, from Shuangcheng went to /top up the bottle /with more wine. Remarkably, the snake, which had been pickling for three months, was still alive. Liu, who received treatment at a local hospital for inflammation, had bought the snake wine to try and cure her rheumatism. A fresh bribery scandal is tarnishing the image of Miss Korea， the nation`s top beauty pageant.“ Sisa Magazine 2580，” an MBC investigative journalism program， reported that a mother of one participant in last year`s contest offered money to an employee of The Hankook Ilbo， the daily that hosts the event， to put her daughter at an advantage. The program also showed that contestants offered judges expensive gifts such as pearl rings and other bribes prior to the event.

No tax hike planned for rich households

The Finance Ministry has clarified its position that policymakers will not raise taxes on the wealthiest 1 percent of the working population. During the National Assembly`s audit on the ministry， Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hyun Oh-seok said that he is skeptical about tax hikes on the rich. Hyun said he shared the view of Rep. Yoon Jin-sik of the ruling Saenuri Party， who said that “further increasing the tax burden of the upper 1 percent is breaching the taxation system.”

A high-ranking audit official said former President Lee Myung-bak is in part responsible for the four-river renovation project being conducted as a preparatory step for his “grand canal” in mind， which allegedly led to budget waste， corruption and price fixing by contractors. “I think that former President Lee Myung-bak has a share of responsibility，” Board of Audit and Inspection Secretary General Kim Young-ho said in response to an opposition lawmaker`s question during a parliamentary audit.

Now our education system is predicted on the idea of academic ability. 우리 교육 제도는 학습 능력에 중점을 두고 있습니다.

The whole system was invented – around the world, there were no public systems of education, really, before the 19th century.

And the second is academic ability, which has really come to dominate our view of intelligence, because the universities designed the system in their image. If you think of it, the whole system of public educaiton around the world is a protracted process of university entrance. And the consequence is that many highly talented, brilliant creative poeople think they’re not, because the thing they were god at at school wasn’t valued, or was actually stigmatized. And I think we can’t afford to go on that way.

둘째는 대학들이 자기 모습을 본떠서 교육제도를 설계했기 때문에 지성은 학습능력이라는 생각이 우리를 지배하게 되었습니다. 생각해보세요. 전세계의 모든 교육 제도들은 대학 입시를 위한 절차라고 볼 수 있어요. 결과적으로 많은 훌륭한 재능과 창의력을 가진 자들은 스스로가 그렇지 않다고 착각을 합니다. 왜냐면 학교를 다니면서 재능이 있었던 것들은 별 가치가 주어지지 않았던가 비난까지 받았으니 더욱 그렇죠. 더 이상 이런 길로 가면 안됩니다.

Singer Shin Seung-hoon to release new album

The latest album will go from British pop to hip-hop， disco and ballad， showing the depth and width of Shin`s musical world. The pop star is nowadays perhaps better known as the charismatic judge on TV audition program “Voice of Korea，” and will hold a series of concerts， “2013 The Shin Seung-hoon Show -- Great Wave，” to mark the release of the album.
