  • 47 How Recovery From Addiction Built My Confidence

    Hey Hey!!

How was addiction was the catalyst to my confidence??

I don’t speak about my recovery often enough. I'm not sure why but my guess is because I burned out in the field of chemical dependency and have been focusing on other areas to help people grow. I have grown as well. I haven't necessarily grown away from my recovery but I have grown within it.  I find it important to re-visit the roots of why I am here to day and who I am today because of those roots.

These are some of the milestones and moments that catapulted self-confidence:

    • Trying new things and discovering I liked them
    • Facing hard situations without drugs
    • Walking through shame and confronting it
    • Being vulnerable with positive outcomes
    • Advocacy for self in the face of adversity
    • Please share your recovery story !! You can schedule to be on the show! Recovery from addiction, food, trauma, or whatever journey you are on right now :)

    • 46 Anxiety, Relationships & Attachment Styles with Erika Straub

      Hey friends!!

I am joined by Erika Straub today for a little chat about attachment styles. She is a relationship coach. She has her bachelors in psychology with a Masters in Depth Psychology.

She touches on her own story which is what led her into doing this work with others. She recognized how her own attachment styles were impacting her romantic relationships. We dive into the four attachment styles which are formed based on environment, relationship and trauma in our life. The nervous system remembers these experiences which translate into our lives now. Erika emphasizes how these patterns can be altered and changed so you can live a freer life that isn’t bogged down by childhood trauma.

Today I am talking with Leya Vandoren. She is a creative coach, writer, podcaster and world traveler. Leya discusses different ways we can tap into our playful and creative side without being extreme. There are some simple ways to be creative, maybe things you are already doing. The biggest topic we cover is writing. Writing can be a massive form of not only creativity but self-healing. It allows you to tap into centers that we can’t always consciously speak aloud.

    • 44. Why Perfectionism Keeps You From Your Confidence

      Hey friends!

What would your definition of perfectionism be? How does striving for perfectionism keep you from achieving your goals? What happens when you aren’t perfect?

Many of these concepts I have talked about on the show before. All arrows point to perfectionism. We fear others seeing us as unworthy so we compensate by trying to be the best at what we do to mask our character defects.

      • Fear of failure.
      • Fear of making mistakes. will no longer be accepted. Trying to be perfect is a way of trying to protect themselves from criticism, rejection, and disapproval.
      • All-or-none thinking.
      • Overemphasis on “shoulds”
      • Comparison to others
      • Perfectionism leads us down a nasty bumpy road filled with potholes, detours and bad weather. You can have goals without expectations which will lead to more positive outcomes and overall improved self-esteem.

        • 42 What Is Overthinking??

          Hey podcast friends!

Overthinking leads to increased feelings of anxiety, perfectionism, obsession, fixation, and feelings of unworthiness. It leads to unhelpful thoughts and emotions much like a rocking chair. It gives us something to do but doesn't get us anywhere. When we overthink, it is our attempt to control a situation to help ease our anxiety but ultimately it increases it.

          The cycle of overthinking:

          1. Interaction with someone

          2. Ruminate about that interaction

          3. Feelings of guilt and shame

          4. Impact on your persona life: disconnect from others, increase depression, short-tempered, isolated, and other symptoms

There are ways to manage excessive thoughts and obsessions. The first step is awareness of the thoughts. The next step is acceptance vs. wishing it away. When we try to wish it away, we will only become more frustrated. Stayed tuned for the end because I recommend a few grounding skills that can help when these thoughts become too much.

        • 41 Scarcity Mindset & Mastering This Holiday Season

          Hey everyone!!

I have been trying to think of what to say but it’s hard for me because I have always had fun and joyful holidays. So I am just going to jump right in and honor every experience that each person is having or going to have. I recognize that this is not the case for everyone. Introverts that this can be very taxing on the nervous system and commitment to socializing more than they prefer. Extroverts tend to overcommit to every event or social situation which can impact your family or relationships.

Scarcity mindset is never feeling like you have accomplished enough. At the end of the day, you always believe there is more to be done and never give credit to the things you were able to do. Remember to give yourself validation and honor the things you do each day.

        • 40 What Is Imposter Syndrome & Do I Have It?

          Hey Friends,

Have you ever felt like you were an imposter at work, school or in relationships? Do you fear that others will see you as a fraud? The thing that keeps us from feeling confident is this psychological occurrence called  imposter syndrome. Most of the time this comes from anxious, unproductive thoughts that we call “overthinking”. We worry that people will see us as a fraud so we overcompensate or prepare in hopes to avoid others seeing that. I have spent most of my life and still from time to time experiencing imposter syndrome. The failure to see your worth and give yourself credit for the hard work you put in.

          The symptoms look like this:

Feeling like success is never possible

          Never giving yourself validation

Always believe you should be doing more

Fear of not meeting others expectations

Believing past successes are related to luck not hard earned

I have found that a lot of these beliefs come from our own judgments. We may have either judged others for lack of work ethic or not doing a good job and we fear being seen that way so we pour our energy into working hard to not become that thing. We do this same thing when we are trying to avoid becoming like our parents, or someone we don't like.

        • 39 Mindset Reset: The Reaction Of Blame

          Dear friends,

This week on mindset reset, we talk about the reaction of blame. Do you ever find yourself blaming your kids or partner after you dropped a glass on the floor? Do you blame a friend because she didn’t meet your expectations?

We all do it. We point the finger especially when we are angry or overwhelmed. We look to put our discomfort somewhere. So why do we do this? Its a defense mechanism. We blame in small situations and big situations. We point the finger to deny our part in it or the negative feeling that comes with owning a mistake.

What is the first thing you notice when you get overwhelmed? Do you shut down? Blame? React? Start a fight?

          TRY THIS:

Start by locating the feeling in your body. Where is the anger hiding or showing itself? Now place your hand over that area. Breathe into the area. Drawing the breathe into that areas filling it up then releasing it.

Once you gave yourself that pause. Ask: What will blaming solve? Is there a different way to have the conversation ? Or take responsibility?
