From real estate basics like location and curb appeal, to design fundamentals like colored doors and kitchen decors, the many ways in which Feng Shui overlaps other disciplines may surprise you – and maybe even empower you.

A clean home is a necessary ingredient for shui's success. Chaos, clutter, dust or the procrastinated piles – whatever your clean up consists of – it all runs interference with our welcoming efforts, and I say this often, but I can't say it enough: High vibe magic in a low vibe environment will not produce champagne-popping results.
So, with the new year in the forecast, here are 7 simple rituals that guarantee your house stays more clean and crisp throughout the year – so you don't feel overwhelmed by all the chores all at once, ever again.

MindBodyGreen article | If You Do Just One Feng Shui Practice for Your Home, Do This
Here's the Q: "I feel like I'm starting to change as a person, but I still have an emotional attachment to my old clothes because of memories. I am no longer in sync with them because it's like they keep me in the old personality, but the memories…When do you decide to throw clothes out?"
Every room in your home should be really good at one thing, even your closet. Closets are about our authenticity – who we are in the world. Which means that a cluttered closet can be a way of hiding ourselves and our emotions.
Decluttering is a great way to serve this space, especially when you understand what causes the clutter. Also, decluttering is not only about getting rid of stuff – it's understanding HOW clutter collides head on with what we really want from life. When we get that, we suddenly have zero tolerance for acquiring too much stuff in the first place.

Here's what I love about the kitchen. We're fed and nourished here. We cook, pay our bills, and help our kids with homework here. We drink our coffee here, host gatherings, enjoy impromptu conversations here. Whether it's opening a bottle of wine while we bake or doing family game night around the table, when we ask people about some of their best memories, think about how many center around a kitchen.
It's interesting to note, too, that one of the best investments we can make when renovating space in a home is the kitchen.
The kitchen in Feng Shui is synonymous with wealth – and wealth, when it comes to shui, has a generous definition. Wealth is our money, but it's also our family and friends, our resources and access to opportunities, it is our health. Wealth is all the threads that create the fabric of a good life. The idea here: if you're fortunate enough to have the resources to feed many mouths, you are wealthy – both in family, fortune, and good health.
But. The kitchen can only stoke our prosperity if we use it.

Is there an element of superstition in the modern practice of Feng Shui?
The origins of Feng Shui carry a lot of superstition – so it is important, I think, that it is present in the way some of its wisdom and insights translate. To me, that registers as the lineage, the ancestry coming through and I so strongly believe that is important to the practice.
That said, thousands of years gone by and hundreds (if not more) interpretations mean there's more "spirit of the law" in practice than "letter of the law" now. So, when someone feels resistance to this wisdom and its concepts, I like to bring up a few modern-day interpretations of our spaces that I feel echo Feng Shui.
So let's talk about the practical magic of Feng Shui, from concepts like command position to the energetic implications of our own choices.

A client recently asked me to share some of my own Feng Shui rituals and routines, the ones I do in my home. As much as Feng Shui conjures up this peaceful, bubbling water, serene, birds chirping, light breeze making the curtains dance idea in people's minds, if you stopped by my house at any given moment, there is usually plenty of "life" happening. We are a proper mix of creative and loud and quiet and controlling and if you throw in the dog, it's a grab bag any given day.
Still, I have certain rituals and routines that serve my family's and my intentions, and which are of service to our home. Today I'll share nine of my rituals and habituals with the disclaimer front-and-center that I am not doing all of these things all the time. May these personal go-tos provide some insight into what I have incorporated into my relationship with our home, and spark your imagination for practices that feel right for you.

Feng Shui is a practice in harmonizing seen and unseen energies. And most times, this work doesn't require a shopping list.
However.
When we start improving the space around us, we can be easily lured into wanting to give our surroundings a little sprucing and spending. Those purchases, though, often come down to personal preferences. And even if your space needs a little décor rehab, it isn't the only thing you can do to make it feel better. In fact, little shifts made intentionally in our rituals and routines create the real BIG change, and that energy isn't label or cost specific.
My non-negotiable costs? The 'tools' I'm rarely without? They might cost you a little green – but luckily, it's not much!
Here are my 5 recommendations for anyone who wants to partner with shui as a lifestyle and practice: a broom, salt, candles, fresh fruit, and a plant.
