  • Always the runner up? Here's what it means, and why it's not a bad thing

Have you been told you're a backup candidate, or that you only * just * missed out. Listen to this episode before you let those feelings of rejection creep in!

In this episode, Emma and Sarah discuss what it means and what you should do. We explain why it's not necessarily a bad thing and share our own success stories of hiring or being hired as a backup candidate.

We also chat about how the "if I'm not their first choice I don't want it" mindset isn't always helpful or applicable in the job search [note, we definitely DO support this energy in your dating life].

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Brittany! “I am obsessed with this podcast. You both have the best voices, I literally soak up everything you both say. I'm on a temporary contract at work and didn't want to return to my substantive position, so started applying for other external jobs. The first interview I absolutely bombed, but then I found your podcast! (I have been at the same company for 9 years and have had a lot of internal transfers, so don't have much interview experience/ I usually try to avoid them like the plague). I was feeling really deflated/stuck, and just lacking confidence in my ability to ever get another job because I thought my interview skills were that bad. After listening to your podcast though I felt so incredibly empowered and aware of my transferable skills. I got an interview with a government agency, which I would have previously found so scary and intimidating. I treated your podcast like a bible while I prepared for that interview, and went into it feeling so confident and prepared! It was in a different area to where I live, so I knew I probably wouldn't get this job, but wanted to do well to prove to myself I could do this and to hopefully get into the merit pool for local positions. My nerves didn't get the best of me and I answered all the questions well. I even stayed firm on the days I would be willing to travel if the hybrid arrangement was negotiable. I received a call from one of the panel members afterwards with absolute glowing feedback and to tell me I'm successfully in the merit pool for local positions over the next 18 months (They said I had everything they were looking for, but there was no wriggle room on the hybrid arrangement). Even though I didnt get that position, I have never felt more proud of myself and am still on such a high. I have even since had the confidence to speak to my current manager about career development opportunities/ a permanent role in her team. This has lead to really great internal feedback on how I'm doing, a permanent job offer and reassurance that there will be upcoming managerial positions that I would be suitable for. I'm still working up the courage to ask for a salary review. All in all, my situation hasn't changed financially or in terms of a better title, but my mindset and self confidence has improved immensely. Keep the podcast coming! I would love to hear more on creating internal champions/mentors and networking! (Especially when your mentors are very busy and you work remotely so don't get many chances to speak to them) Thanks girls x”

  • Chat GPT: Is it the ultimate job search cheat code?

Love it or hate it, the AI chatbot from Open AI has taken the world by storm, and there are plenty of people claiming it can revolutionise (or even automate) your job search. But is it really the ultimate job search cheat code?

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma In this episode, we take a closer look at chat GPT and its impact on the job search process. We explore the benefits and drawbacks of using chat GPT in your job search, and hear from a very important expert on the topic. From crafting compelling resumes to acing job interviews, we'll discuss how chat GPT can help you land your dream job – and when it might be better to rely on traditional job search methods.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Jess “Hi Ladies, Just want to send a huge thanks for your podcast, it helped my nerves so much these past few weeks. I’m returning to a 9-5 job after 8 years running my own business- your tips helped me prepare for interviews so well. I applied for 3 jobs, interviewed for them all AND was offered all 3 positions! (Including one at NSW Health- they called me 1hour after the interview to let me know I had the job!) So I get to choose the one I was really hoping to get. The stories / STAR tips made a huge difference- it kept me focussed even when they threw a curveball question at me. Thanks and keep doing what you do!”

We’re you’re besties, and your hype girls here to give you the confidence boost you need on the other side. So put your headphones in, take a deep breath, and let’s debrief!

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Daisy “I got an interview and only had 2 days to prepare but at the same time i was in fight prep for a competition so that left me little to no time. I jumped on Spotify and started looking for anything that might help and came across your podcast. I listened to as many episodes as I could when I was driving or doing things around the house. I had two rounds of interviews and got the job. Thank you so much. I still listen to your podcast from time to time because I genuinely enjoy it. You make the process so much easier. I have recommended your podcast to everyone I know that might be looking for a job.”

  • You're not alone - how to tackle rejection in a job search

So you had your heart set on the job. You did the best you could, you got a great interview, they seemed to love you, and then you found out you didn’t get the job. Or maybe you’re getting generic rejection emails from every job you apply for. Either way, it's easy to get discouraged.

This episode has been highly requested, so Sarah and Emma go through our tips, as well as the tips our listeners submitted on Instagram. This one is less about practical advice, and more about support, and we include a great mindset exercise at the end to help you put your rejection into context.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Simon

Hi Emma and Sarah, I started job hunting almost 5 months ago and didn't have a lot of luck until recently! Coming from a toxic work environment had shattered my confidence and it was showing, I had been applying for roles beneath my ability with little success. After a good reset over the new year and then a holiday walking around Tasmania (i'm from NZ) I thought I needed to really do something about this and started listening to your podcast! I listened to over a dozen episodes whilst on holiday and surpise a company I had applied to, rang and wanted an interview as soon as possible, so whilst on holiday we did a zoom interview which I thought I bombed, but they wanted a second one when I got back. long story short your positive practical advice gave me the confidence and tips I needed to succeed in the interviews and I just got the job this week! It's a step up, with more pay, slightly less hours and great benefits. But most importantly the people there are so nice; it's almost a dream. I've been telling everyone about your podcast, so please keep it up! Cheers Simon”

Fails, mistakes, errors - they are the things we DON’T want to mention in a job interview, but they are interview questions that have been gaining popularity! What on EARTH is your interviewer looking for in this question, and is it a trick?

In this week’s episode Sarah and Emma explain why this question gets asked. We go through all the stories you can use in your answer that you might not have thought about, and give you tips for how to add reflection to your answer.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Isaac “You helped me land a new job making $40,000 more than my last job and fully remote! Thank you so much for continuing on!”

  • So you didn't get the job. How was the decision made behind the scenes?

So you didn't get the job. Maybe you're feeling a little down, or maybe you're just trying to figure out what happened—why weren't you the best person for the job? How do you fix it next time?

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma, we talk about some real, boring conversations that happen behind closed doors that show that there often isn't anything you did wrong or missed—it often depends on your match to the business and their particular circumstances.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Jes who bought us 20 coffees!!

“I decided to begin looking for a new job this past fall and have been listening to all of your podcasts (many of them several times!) as I've been preparing my cover letters, resume, and practicing my interview reaponses. With each interview I reviewed the experience, asked for feedback when possible, and made notes in my interview prep notebook. While doing this I was also applying to grad school and using your resume and cover letter tips for that as well. I'm pleased to share that a few weeks ago I received an offer letter for an amazing job with a 30k salary increase in addition to an offer of addmision to the doctoral program I had applied to!! I truly believe none of this would have been possible so quickly without your invaluable podcast and resources. Thank you heaps ladies!! ☕”

  • What's in and what's out in 2023 (work edition)

New year, new you. The start of the year is a great opportunity to start fresh and reconsider your priorities for the year ahead.

In this fun lighthearted episode, Sarah and Emma talk all things work, and go through the things that we think are better off being left in the past, and all the things we want to see more of in the future.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Abigail “Hi! My name is Abigail. I’m from Pennsylvania, USA. I have a success story for you! I just graduated from college in December 2022, I started listening to your podcasts Wednesday while driving to an interview and started bingeing them through the week. I had 3 final interviews for 3 different companies on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Your advice helped me so much and made me feel much more confident. By Friday afternoon, I received 3/3 job offers!! (lab support specialist, quality control analyst, and scientist 1). I was able to negotiate my ideal shift and starting pay using your advice as well as accept and appropriately decline the other 2 offers!! Y’all are life savers, I’ve  already suggested your podcasts to all my friends graduating in the spring!”

  • Things you should do if you have just been laid off

Being laid off can be a traumatic experience, especially when it's not expected.

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma help you put your life back on track when you receive bad news and address the different things you need to do in order to get a job and thrive again.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kristen! “Hi Emma and Sarah!! I’m taking you up on your offer to slide into your DMs. I’ve been listening to your podcast from all the way over in the US for about 2 months since I made the decision to start looking for jobs. I love the people I’ve worked with for the last 4 years, but I felt stunted in my growth and was severely underpaid.

Your podcast has been so helpful to me through my interview process. I love your 3-part storytelling tip: it completely changed the way I prepared for interviews. Over the last 6 weeks, I’ve had 4 interviews with one company, and just signed an offer letter yesterday! I’ll be paid 2.5 TIMES what I was getting paid. It feels unreal. Thank you so much for infusing some lightheartedness into the job seeking process. You’ve been my commute companion and a real support in landing my dream job.”

  • How to bring up a planned vacation in your job search

To tell your new possible future employer that you will need to take a week off in three weeks can be a big stumbling block in the job application. Will it be a deal breaker? Will they let you go on the holiday?!

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma reassure you that it is okay to talk about it and in fact, it’s better to discuss it upfront so you can avoid any awkward conversations later on. We even do some role plays so you can hear how this conversation might sound.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Cole. “Hello, Sarah and Emma!  I just graduated with my MBA, and I have been listening to your podcast on Spotify for the past two months (yes, I have listened to every episode!). I have had panel interview after panel interview, but don’t worry, I brought my notepad (even if it was on zoom 🤪). I want to thank you both so much, because I just got offered my dream job at my dream company in my dream city, and they paid me 15% more than I asked for!  I’m going to be transitioning from graduate school to literally building space stations and space shuttles!  I couldn’t have done it without the two of you!”
