Do you ever find yourself falling short when it comes to getting the results you desire?  Today’s episode is all about being accountable for oneself, and I’ll be dipping into my five building blocks to build accountability. This episode may be a reality check for a lot of you, but I think it’s going to help out a great deal.

• Why are you starting your own business? - Why do you want to start your own business vs being an employee? If you want to be in charge of your destiny and build something for yourself, great! If, on the other hand, you simply don’t want to have a boss who’s holding you accountable, then you could be in for a shock when you become your own boss.
• See the bigger picture - Accountability isn’t merely about completing a list of tasks. It’s about being committed to seeing the objective through to completion. While getting the day-to-day tasks finished is essential, you have to understand how they relate to the bigger picture. Without the bigger picture in place, you can’t be accountable for achieving the overall objectives that will define your success.
• How to make yourself accountable - Without a crystal clear expectation, it’s impossible to be accountable. Don’t just say you want more money, say exactly how much money you want and when you want to have earned it by. Your goals have to be measurable. Then you need to know how to go about achieving your goals. You have to be realistic about your capabilities and your capacity. Often, this means saying “no” to people who aren’t helping you get closer to your goal since you only have so much time and energy in a given day.
• Your fear of asking for help can lead to failure - I get it! Many of you were forced to be self-sufficient in early life and have been doing a great job in taking care of yourselves without ever asking for help. Understand that business doesn’t work like this. If you’re used to going it alone and refusing to ask for help then you need a shift in mindset. 
• The importance of feedback - Feedback is essential and you have to get it regularly. Without honest feedback, how do you know whether you’re on track to achieving your goals? Beware though, if you’re asking for feedback from a spouse, bestie, a friend’s grandmother, or anyone that has no business experience. Make sure you get your feedback from people with relevant expertise and those who understand your context. If you don’t have any business-minded friends to ask, then join a mastermind group, hire a coach, or go out and make yourself some new friends. Even though she felt a lot of friction from her clients, she pivoted and focused on becoming a coach in all areas of life as opposed to merely focusing on money.
• What’s your current state? – Courtney talks about a time in her life when she was comfortably making six figures, yet she was waking up late with low energy and not feeling particularly happy or vibrant. If you’re continually feeling low on enthusiasm, you need to question yourself and reflect. Even though running a business is difficult and challenging, it should bring you a lot of passion and joy. If you’re not feeling completely energized about getting up in the morning and getting to work, consider whether you need to pivot into an area you feel passionate and energized about.
• Streamlining – While pregnant, Courtney realized she didn’t want to spend her time doing things that she didn’t particularly enjoy. After auditing the areas of her business, she essentially got rid of all the waste, automating a lot of her procedures so she could focus her time and energy on what she wanted to focus on.

Consumers are doing their research. They have countless options and have their own opinions about what they want. They’re not going to buy based on the charisma of a salesman anymore. That’s why, as someone selling professional services in the online space, you have to understand that credibility is the new currency.

• Closing a sale is just the beginning - There are so many courses that help you to go out there, pull the trigger, and close the deal to get your first sale. While this is important, getting the sale is just the beginning of the relationship, It’s not the end goal. That’s why you have to build credibility into your sales process.
• Your brand isn’t a logo or a service – It’s important to focus less on what your service is and more on what problem you solve. You need to have a specific niche that your product or service caters to. Your product or logo isn’t what differentiates you in the market. The problem you solve is what differentiates you. Services That Sell has a proven method to help you get crystal clear on this and to align your message with your ideal customer.
• Being credible before the sale -  You need consistency with human-to-human connection. Are you consistently being visible? Are you consistently adding value? Is there consistency on your core messaging throughout your social media posts? Your content needs to be consistent with how buyers make decisions and if you’re not putting yourself out there and adding value to the audience in front of you then you will quickly lose that audience. Your content needs to be purposeful and it needs to show how you can get people consistent results
• Being credible after the sale - Selling is not the end goal. Maintaining credibility after the sale, therefore, means you have to have a documented, proven process in place that will get your client the results they desire and expect. You have to deliver on your promise. By doing so, you’re building on your credibility and setting yourself up for the next sale.
• Giving your services for free - There’s a common conception that you have to initially give away your services for free in order to earn credibility. I’m very skeptical about this practice, especially when it comes to the coaching business. If no transaction takes place, your client probably won’t be fully committed to putting in the work that’s required of them to get the results they want. Therefore, giving away your services for free like this can hurt your credibility.

• Promise one result - Kemi had trouble niching down. Even though her target audience was already small, the result she was promising was still vague. That’s when she started using results-focused language, making her promise of “Get that grant!” It was a very specific result and would force her to become committed to her clients. Promising a clear, tangible and measurable result takes true courage.
• Willing to fail – Despite being terrified at times, Kemi has a willingness to try new things out, even if it could mean failure. This is the perfect attitude for growth, especially if you’re following a proven methodology. She learns from each and every action, whether it’s posting on social media, going live on Facebook or having sales calls.
• If you truly want to help people, you will succeed – According to Kemi, the difference between someone that has success in Services That Sell vs someone that doesn’t is the desire and passion to go out there and serve. If you just want to make money, it’s much harder to be successful, because the courage and drive come from a deep desire to help people.

• You still have to do the work - While Emily recognized the need to hire a coach, she asserts that doing so isn’t like a magic button that will solve all your problems. What do you think it means to scale your business? In  today’s episode, we’re going to talk about the most important elements in your business to determine whether you’re ready or not, and break down what it actually means to scale your business.

In order to scale, you have to have three core areas in place:

1. You need to be able to attract qualified leads to your business. This doesn’t just mean marketing your services to the general public, but communicating the problem you solve to qualified leads who would benefit from what you’re offering.
2. You need to be able to convert your qualified leads into clients. You have to close the sale. I’ve found the best way to do this, by far, is through sales calls. It’s a tried and tested method that’s been proven time and time again.
3. You need to be able to deliver your service consistently, utilizing a proven and documented methodology. Because customizing and having to change the way you do things with each client isn’t efficient.

In my signature program, Services That Sell, I help my clients to get these three areas mastered. Without having these foundations in place, there’s no point in trying to scale.

• Making more money vs scaling - A lot of people mistake scaling with making more money. They’re not the same thing. Most of us are at a point where we’re ready to make more money, but not where we’re ready to scale. In fact, making more money is a by-product of successful scaling.
• Start with 1 on 1 - In the early days, working with clients in a 1 on 1 format is the best way forward. It allows you to charge a premium price while you’re developing your process and refining your methodology. Going through this process will eventually put you in an excellent place to scale your business.
• Always focus on the next step - If you don’t have a documented methodology, then focus on getting one. If you have plenty of qualified leads but no sales, then you need to learn how to close the sale. Always ask yourself: what’s the most important “next step” to move forward in my business? Don’t waste time on things like PR if you’re not yet achieving the results that warrant getting this kind of exposure.
• How much capital? - You shouldn’t need to raise any capital if you’re selling a service. If you were to develop a physical product then that’s another story. If you’re selling a service you should be able to fund your business yourself. Profit margins are usually ridiculously high in service businesses. This means that scaling can be achieved by reinvesting your profits and avoiding external financing.

• Building relationships - According to  Karleen, people want to do business with people they know and like. She never tries to force a relationship and is always invested in building relationships organically over the long term.
• Becoming a CEO - Being a business owner hasn’t been easy to Karleen and she’s had to work hard to become a successful CEO. She still considers herself a student of the game, working with many of her peers and reading relevant books in order to nurture her CEO abilities over time.
• Balancing growth with client expectations - To avoid sacrificing the quality of client work, Karleen ensures she is always fully focused on the event at hand. The Vanity Group is niche by design and she never overloads her team’s schedule. Long-term growth is always dependent on the ability to deliver your promise to your clients in the present.
