"I think we’re in a really interesting time – The pressure on the original family unit is almost intolerable, and I don’t think we’ve yet adapted to create a new form of the family, and allocation of who does what. If that will even exist. But that old nuclear family model is now redundant, and we’re in a kind of in between phase, where we’re trying to figure out “so how do we do it? and how do we provide all this stuff that we’re now expected to provide?””

Today’s guest is Jerry Hyde, London-based therapist, who has been running men’s groups for 27 years. Jerry and French film director Mai Hua released a documentary essay called “Make me a man”, ‘What happens when men challenge the patriarchal model of masculinity… and choose vulnerability instead’.

In Les Équilibristes, the aim is to explore how we can embrace all of our identities, roles, to lead a life that honors them all. And for a long time, I’ve been convinced that one of the ways we can get women to take up more space in the workplace is to let men take up more space at home.

When I came across Jerry’s work and movie, I was very interested in having a conversation with him about the gender stereotypes that are holding men back from claiming other roles than the ones traditionally assigned to them.

You should watch the movie, and you should watch it with people you care about. 

And this conversation goes beyond the movie, discussing work-life balance, with a welcome perspective on just how recent all of these discussions are, and how intense the pressures are for modern-day humans trying to make it all work.

I hope this conversation is as thought-provoking to you as it was to me.

Cette interview, ça faisait un moment que je rêvais de la faire – depuis quelque temps, je suis de plus en plus convaincue par le fait qu’on ne pourra faire plus de place aux femmes dans les entreprises que si on fait plus de place aux hommes en dehors de l’entreprise, notamment dans l’espace domestique.

J’ai vu et été bouleversée par le film de Jerry Hyde et la réalisatrice Mai Hua « Make me a man ». Jerry est un thérapeute britannique qui mène des groupes de parole pour hommes depuis 27 ans. 

Le film est le point de départ de notre conversation, qui va bien au-delà pour discuter en particulier de la notion d’équilibre des temps de vie. Jerry apporte une perspective et une hauteur bienvenues sur le sujet, en rappelant à quel point il est récent, et à quel point la pression qui pèse sur le modèle de famille nucléaire est forte. Nous sommes en transition entre un ancien modèle et un nouveau encore à inventer.
