In this episode of Learning to Glow, I’m joined by Samantha Chandler to explore a completely different perspective on iron, heavy periods, and women’s health.
Samantha shares how a “low iron” blood test during pregnancy led her down a path of iron supplementation, postpartum complications, and eventually a deeper investigation into how iron actually functions in the body. We talk about the difference between iron levels in the blood versus how iron moves through tissues, why ferritin levels can be misunderstood, and why many women with heavy periods may actually be dealing with iron dysregulation rather than simple deficiency.
We also discuss the key nutrients that support healthy iron metabolism, including copper, vitamin A, whole food vitamin C, and electrolytes. Samantha shares why she believes food quality matters, how modern iron fortification may play a role in mineral imbalance, and simple ways women can start supporting their bodies through nutrient dense foods.
This conversation challenges some of the common narratives around iron deficiency and invites women to look deeper at root causes when it comes to fatigue, heavy periods, and mineral balance.
In this episode we talk about:
• Why “low iron” on a blood test may not tell the full story
• The difference between iron deficiency and poor iron circulation
• Why ferritin levels are often misunderstood
• The connection between heavy menstrual bleeding and iron regulation
• Nutrients that support iron movement including copper and vitamin A
• Cod liver oil, beef liver, and whole food sources of minerals

In today’s episode of Learning to Glow, we’re talking about modern unwinding, better sleep, and what calm can actually look like in real life. I’m joined by Emily Bennett as we chat about how our relationship with stress, rest, and evening routines can shift as life seasons change, especially during motherhood and busy, high demand years.
We talk about how stepping away from old wind down habits can improve sleep quality, reduce racing thoughts, and create more intentional evenings. Emily shares practical ways to build simple nighttime rituals that feel supportive rather than restrictive, and how small, consistent habits can have a powerful impact on nervous system regulation and overall wellbeing.

After a decade in emergency medicine, Dr. Gajer shifted her focus to proactive, root-cause care centered on metabolic health, habit change, and improving healthspan. We talk about what’s missing in modern medicine, why being told “it’s just genetic” is rarely the full story, and how insulin resistance quietly drives many midlife symptoms.
We dive into fatigue, weight gain, poor sleep, and loss of vitality, especially during perimenopause, and how insulin resistance, muscle loss, inflammation, gut health, thyroid and cortisol imbalance, and hormone shifts all connect. Dr. Gajer explains insulin resistance in simple terms and why the eat less move more approach often backfires in midlife.

In this episode, we explore gut health and how it impacts overall well-being. Martha Carlin, founder of BiotiQuest, shares her journey into gut health science after her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. That experience led her to leave her to build a science-driven company focused on gut health and chronic disease.
The conversation examines how gut health is connected to chronic conditions such as leaky gut, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and inflammation. We also discuss how everyday lifestyle factors can either support or disrupt the gut, including:
• Diet and the impact of the Western food system
• Antibiotics and gut recovery
• Exercise and gut resilience
• Sleep, stress, and nervous system balance
