  • ADHD and the Empty Nest: 4 Things That Need To Change When The Kids Leave

What happens when ADHD meets the empty nest?

For years, you may have been the one remembering the deadlines, watching the clock, reminding your child about the thing they forgot, and stepping in before everything fell apart. Then your child leaves home, and suddenly, you can't see any of it anymore.

And as uncomfortable as that can be, there may actually be a little relief in it too.

In this episode of Life After Launch, I'm talking about something I don't think we talk about nearly enough: ADHD and the empty nest.

This one is personal for me. I don't have ADHD, but I love people who do, and I've lived in a family where ADHD has been part of our everyday life. I've seen firsthand how ADHD doesn't just affect the person who has it. It can affect the entire family system.

And when the kids leave, that system changes.

Maybe you have an adult child with ADHD and you're trying to figure out how to support them without continuing to manage their life from a distance. Maybe your spouse has ADHD, and now that it's just the two of you, differences that were always there suddenly feel a lot more noticeable. Or maybe you're the one with ADHD, and you're discovering that all this "free time" everyone promised you isn't making life feel easier at all.

We're talking about all of it.

In this episode, I share four practical shifts that can help you navigate ADHD during the empty nest years with more understanding, less frustration, and a lot more intention.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why it's time to stop monitoring your adult child. When you've spent years helping a child with ADHD stay organized, remember deadlines, manage time, and keep life moving, stepping back can feel incredibly uncomfortable. But not knowing everything may be an important part of allowing them, and you, to launch.
    • The difference between supporting and rescuing. When your adult child calls with a problem, I'll give you one question to ask yourself before jumping in to fix it: Am I helping because they genuinely need my support, or am I rescuing them because watching them struggle makes me uncomfortable?
    • How understanding ADHD can change the way you interpret behavior. Executive functioning can affect planning, organization, working memory, time management, and starting and completing tasks. Understanding the "why" doesn't eliminate consequences or frustration, but it can help us stop taking every behavior so personally.
    • What ADHD can look like in an empty nest marriage. When the kids are gone, differences between spouses can suddenly feel much bigger. I share one of the biggest recurring issues in my own life, being on time, and the surprisingly simple solution that stopped an argument we'd had over and over again.
    • Why sometimes you need to change the system, not the person. Separate cars. Shared calendars. More alarms. Different routines. A new division of responsibilities. Instead of spending the next 20 years having the same fight you've already had 400 times, this stage of life gives you an opportunity to ask: Is there another way we could do this?
    • Why empty nesting can be especially challenging if you have ADHD yourself. Raising children gave your life years of built-in structure, including school schedules, practices, appointments, dinners, carpools, deadlines, and places everyone needed to be. When that structure disappears, a wide-open day may actually feel harder to manage. We talk about how to intentionally build structure back into your life in a way that works for the person you are now.

One of the biggest things I've learned is that context isn't an excuse. Context is information. And information gives us choices.

Understanding ADHD isn't about fixing someone or excusing every behavior. It's about recognizing that two people can experience time, organization, responsibility, and even everyday life very differently. Then we can ask a much more useful question than, Why are you like this?

The better question may be: Now that I understand this better, what can we do differently?

And isn't that what the empty nest is really asking all of us to do?

We're learning a different way to parent our adult children. We're learning a different way to be married. We're learning a different way to spend our time. And maybe, after spending so many years focused on everyone else, we're finally learning some things about ourselves too.

If you're sitting in that quiet in-between space wondering why this chapter doesn't feel quite as simple as everyone told you it would, I want you to know you're not alone. Your kids are learning how to build lives that work for them, and you are too. You don't have to become a completely different person in this next chapter. You get to understand yourself better, create systems that actually work for you, and decide what you want your life to look like now.

Your kids launching doesn't mean your story is over.

    You get to launch too.

  • The Friendship Audit: Why You’re Tired of Friendships Built on Habit

Here is the thing nobody says out loud about midlife: for the last 18 years, your social life ran on autopilot. You didn't choose all your friends, you defaulted into them because your kids shared a carpool lane, a soccer team, or a school committee.

In this episode of Life After Launch, we are doing a strict, unapologetic Friendship Audit. When the daily logistics of parenting disappear, the friendships that were built purely on logistics disappear too. And that isn't a failure, it's just life.

I am sharing the exact two-question filter to help you figure out who genuinely energizes you and who you are doing all the emotional heavy lifting for. It is time to stop forcing connections out of habit or guilt. Letting go of friendships that drain you isn't mean; it is the first real chance you’ve had in two decades to choose, on purpose, who gets your time and energy.

If you are ready to reclaim your peace and stop pouring your energy into cups that don’t pour back into yours, hit that follow button right now for daily tools to help you navigate this next chapter with absolute confidence.

Share this episode with another mom navigating midlife transitions because handing someone a tool that helped you is exactly how we ensure no woman goes through this chapter alone.

This week on Life After Launch, life coach for women Allison Goldberg sits down with author Suzy McNamara to discuss overcoming midlife anxiety and finding purpose when your life undergoes a sudden, massive shift.

When the daily chaos of motherhood finally slows down, the emotions we’ve pushed aside for years begin to rise to the surface. In this beautifully raw conversation, Suzy opens up about her five-year journey caring for her husband through early-onset Alzheimer’s, the unexpected loss of her sister, and the quiet heartbreak of missing who she used to be when everyone was healthy and under her roof.

This isn't just a conversation about medical loss; it’s an episode for every midlife woman who is wrestling with the loneliness of changing family dynamics, learning how to transition from manager to friend with her adult children, and figuring out who she wants to be in this next chapter. For years, we move at supersonic speed by driving carpool, managing households, and putting everyone else first. But what happens when the house suddenly gets quiet, and the roles that defined us for decades completely shift? Author Suzy McNamara joins Allison to pull back the layers on layered grief in midlife: navigating the "longest goodbye" of a spouse's terminal illness, processing sudden family loss, and managing the simultaneous transition into an empty nest. This episode is a masterclass in radical self-acceptance, uncovering internal joy, and finding the ultimate bravery that comes with life over 50.

    Inside the Episode:
    • The Sudden Space to Feel: Why slowing down forces us to face the complicated emotions we minimized during the busy parenting years.
    • The Identity Shift of Caregiving: Suzy opens up about the painful emotional transition from being a romantic partner to a protective caregiver.
    • Missing the Old You: A comforting validation for the empty nester who doesn't just miss her kids, but misses the version of herself she was when they were home.
    • Redefining the Adult Child Relationship: Practical wisdom on letting go of the "manager" role, respecting your adult kids' space, and building genuine adult friendships with them.
    • The Illusion of Forgiveness: The perspective-shifting advice Suzy received from a priest that relieved her of the burden of judgment and opened the door to acceptance.
    • "A Big, Beautiful Life": The powerful words whispered to Suzy at her lowest point, and why they are the exact message of hope your next chapter needs.
Memorable Quotes from Allison & Suzy:"With Alzheimer's, you lose those really special magical bonds a long time before they die. Every day is a new occasion for grief." — Suzy McNamara"I miss the person I was when both of those people in my life were happy and healthy. You not only miss having your kids around, you miss who you were when they were in your house." — Suzy McNamara"Loneliness can be there even when you have everything in your life. I’ve experienced loneliness sitting right next to someone that I deeply love when we were not emotionally aligned." — Allison GoldbergConnect with the Show & Resources:

  • How to Handle Empty Nest Anxiety: 5 Tips for Your Child’s Last Summer at Home

It’s May, and if you have a child graduating or moving out, you’re likely feeling the "May-cray" at an all-time high. You’re looking at every "last Tuesday" or "last late-night snack" and feeling that lump in your throat.

But beneath the sadness, there is often a hidden layer of fear: Will they be safe? Can they handle the pressure? Did I teach them enough?

This week, Alison Goldberg is getting real about the "Emotional Transfer"-how we accidentally pass our anxiety onto our kids when they need our confidence the most. If you want this summer to be defined by connection and lightness rather than lectures and interrogation, this is your survival guide.

What You’ll Learn: 5 Ways to Navigate the Transition
    1. Stop the Emotional Transfer: Learn how to stop making your child responsible for your fears.
    2. Create a "Safe Harbor": How to move from "interrogating" to creating a space where they actually want to share the truth.
    3. Choose Lightness Over Intensity: Why every dinner doesn’t need to be a "core memory" and how to bring joy back into the house.
    4. Reclaim Your Identity: The "tough love" reminder that your emotional survival is your job, not theirs.
    5. The Power of Trust: How to let your child feel your belief in them so they leave home feeling capable and empowered.
    Memorable Moments:
    • Why "be careful" might be the most damaging thing you can say right now.
    • The one question to ask instead of "Where are you going?"
    • How to build a life that still belongs to you (The Walk & Talk strategy).

  • The Empty Nest Evolution: Who is This Grown-Up in My House?

They didn’t just go away... they changed.

It’s the moment every parent both craves and dreads: the realization that the child you raised has officially become an adult with their own opinions, their own bank account, and a life that no longer requires your constant intervention. But if we’re being honest? That shift can feel incredibly disorienting.

In this episode of Life After Launch, host Allison Goldberg dives into the "aha" moments that happen when your college student returns home. From the sting of navigating their new independence to the anxiety of late-night summer house rules, we are discussing the necessary evolution of your role from "Director" to "Consultant."

    Inside this episode, we discuss:

    • The Silence Strategy: Why building the "muscle" of not speaking is your greatest tool for a healthier relationship.
    • Independence vs. Anxiety: Navigating the friction of their new choices (and their money!) without losing your mind.
    • The 2:00 AM Rule: How to set house boundaries that protect your peace of mind without stifling their growth.
    • Space to Grow: Why pulling back on communication actually brings them closer.

If you feel like you're losing your place in their lives, this episode is your roadmap. This isn't about losing a child; it’s about building a new, adult relationship with the person they are becoming.
