When we pursue a goal, we need to define what we'll do and what we won't do in certain situations. If I want to lose weight, I will set boundaries around how often I eat out. If I want to build a lasting, growth-oriented relationship, I will commit to not cheating! We can look at these boundaries as non-negotiables, but ultimately they form the foundation from which we can make decisions that align with what really matters to us. For the addict, it may be "no use." For the diabetic it may be "take medications without fail." For me, one of my non-negotiables is to "approach life as a practice." May seem nebulous, but it guides me away from perfectionism and toward self-compassion!
