We're all being forced to work through a number of very challenging circumstances right now: emotionally, physically, fiscally, relationally. It seems every sector of our lives has felt a pull. So how do we cope?
Drs. Kori and Joe share their perspectives on the situation and offer some hope to those of you who need a bit of calm amidst the chaos.
Kori shares that we can ground ourselves by breaking down our actions into practical and adaptive strategies for moving forward.
1. We can calm the body by remembering to breathe. Fear and disgust is a normal reaction to uncertainty and perceived threats to our survival. First understand that, and then attune to the sensation of the body itself to move from the catastrophizing mind. We can easily get wrapped up in looping thoughts of the worst case scenario, and while some may be helpful, breathing can help us to recenter around the thoughts that can be of real value.
2. Tune into the feelings of grit, resolve, and determination that arise within you. When you read about the COVID acts of kindness occurring within your neighborhood or communities, let them be powerful reminder of what truly matters. The benevolence of others can feel incredibly sheltering and provide you with a sense of peace. Really feel it.
3. Making plans for what you will do TODAY can help you to feel purposeful and stable. Certainly, look ahead at what the future could potentially hold, then invite a question like, "What is one thing I could do today to prepare for that, just in case scenario?"
4. Consider that social distancing need not mean social "isolation". We are already an incredibly lonely society, and many people cannot claim that they have even one person they can reach out to for support. While we may need to say away from others in the flesh, it does not mean we cannot be utilizing our resources to stay connected. Reach out to your loved ones.
