  • [206] Traveling The World With 4 Kids with Paul and Becky Kortman

'They' say having kids stops you from traveling. I don't plan on having one, but if I did I wouldn't let it stop me and I know enough traveling parents to know that's just not true.

I guess it just changes your priorities and makes jumping on a plane or boat something that requires a bit more forethought and planning.

But let me ask you, do you think you could sell your home and 90% of your belongings to fly your family around the world and travel full-time?

    The Kortmans did.

In early 2014, Paul and his wife Becky Kortman decided to sell their house and most of their possessions so that they could live a life of location independence.

They have traveled with their kids - Alia, Josiah, Mathias, and Zander to Davao, Philippines, Chiang Mai, Thailand, Cape Town, South Africa, Sofia, Bulgaria and Lisbon, Portugal to name a few and currently they are on their way to Ecuador in an RV!

Paul runs a digital marketing business from his laptop, and together they've built Nomad Together, which offers support to location independents (especially families) and to those who are interested in it, through education and a community forum.

On today's podcast, we're going to talk about why they believe travelling is healthy for children, how they support their family financially and what to do when your family and friends don’t agree with your lifestyle.

      • [205] Why I’m Unpacking My Suitcase and Choosing Freedom

Since I first became obsessed with how to have more freedom in my life, I've always asked this question to my community - what does FREEDOM mean to you?

There are different versions of freedom and yours may differ from mine, but most people, when I ask this will tell me that freedom is working on what you love, when you want and where you want.

        Who wouldn't want that?

Lately I've realized my version of freedom is changing after a pretty life-changing event brought me home in a rush to be with my Dad in hospital, and with my family.

All my priorities shifted as I told people I was back in my hometown of Wellington indefinitely.

Each time I said that word, even though I didn't truly know what it meant for me, it started to sink in that I was sticking around for longer than a month or too, and for the first time since leaving New Zealand in 2006, I was happy to be doing so.

I've always said it's not just about having the freedom to work anywhere or anytime you want, or to travel the world, it's also about having more time and freedom to spend with your loved ones, family and friends when you choose too.

        #choosefreedom!

As you can imagine when I made the decision to stick around it was a very big one for me that kind of crept up and then hit me, and made me surprisingly calm, centered and grateful to stop for a while and deepen my bonds with my family, make new friends and create a community on the ground in person, to complement my amazing online one.

It's a very big change in my life from being the Suitcase Entrepreneur for 5 years to having a soon to be home.

In this Fresh in Fifteen episode, I'll reveal the Facebook announcement I shared on October 3rd and the amazing and touching reaction I got from people around the world.

I'll also reveal my Right2Freedom initiative I'm finally taking action on! I'd be humbled if you listened in and left a comment with your opinion.

Like me, your business might be predominantly online, but live events are a great tool for your business.

Why? Because live events or masterminds can help you share your message far and wide.

They give you a chance to socialize with your ideal clients and allow everyone who's attending to form deeper and life long connections that go far beyond the event itself.

That's why since 2011 I've been running live Mastermind Retreats and workshops around the world.

Have you ever thought of hosting one? There is so much to consider - planning, promotion, agenda.. where do you even start?

Prepare yourself to be “WOW”ed. With over 13 years of experience in the fitness and nutrition world, Lori Kennedy is the founder and CEO of The WOW! Nutrition System and the Wellness Business Academy.

Lori produces an annual 3-day live event called The Wellness Business Summit in Canada to show alternative wellness practitioners how to take their businesses online- of course, using Lori’s own proven “secret sauce” recipe for success.

Lori was voted Notable.ca Entrepreneur to Watch, has been interviewed in dozens podcasts, spoken on the stages of The Fitness Business Summit and the Functional Medicine Success Summit and has been published in a variety of online blogs and magazines.

In this episode, Lori shares the benefits of live events, how to organize one and how to make it a huge success. We go into pricing, earlybird sales, how to promote and market your event even when you're just starting out, and how to get additional revenue streams aside from just ticket sales.

You'll learn a ton so take out your notebooks and start writing!

Launching a digital or physical product is quite an undertaking. But once it's launched a lot of people then struggle getting publicity for their brand and landing media coverage to ensure ongoing sales.

If you consider yourself an online entrepreneur then no doubt you've tried a ton of different methods like guest posts, advertising, podcasts, joint ventures and more.

But did you know that being featured in magazines can give amazing results? Especially if you sell physical products.

Now if only there's a way to do this without spending thousands of dollars hiring a PR specialist.. Wait! There is!

Our guest today, Andreea Ayers, discovered her talent for generating press coverage after launching an independent t-shirt business, Tees for Change.

She initially started with 96 t-shirts and sold them out within a month!

Despite knowing little about the industry, she went on to sell over 20,000 tees in over 300 stores in the United States and around the world thanks to her hard work and media coverage in over 200 magazines, newspapers and TV shows.

These included ABC, NBC, Fox, The Bonnie Hunt Show, Redbook, The Chicago Tribune, USA Today Magazine, Ladies’ Home Journal, Self, Shape, The Nest, and many more.

She even got Tori Spelling, Ed Begley, Denise Richards, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sarah Michelle Gellar to wear her tees!

She eventually sold Tees for Change in 2011 and two more companies and is currently working on two projects: Get Media Happy and Launch Grow Joy, focused on helping hundreds of entrepreneurs secure media coverage through her online courses and programs.

In this interview, she tells us how she turned her $1,000 investment to a 6-figure sales in 18 months, how she got her products featured in national magazines and lessons she’s learned from all of her previous ventures

It's never easy being a mompreneur or a dadpreneur and I really appreciate them because they are incredible at juggling family and career.

But how do you take it a step further and include lifestyle, location independence or digital nomadism into that scenario?

That's the topic I discuss on the podcast thanks to Sharon from my community, who asked:

"I only recently got to know your blog and started listening to your podcasts. I find it open minded and inspiring so thank you. I do have a question though, as a mother of two 'elementary school' kids, I feel there is a big gap between my world and my possibilities to the 'new lifestyle' you demonstrate.

The concept of 'free life' is different for me as I do not wish to rock the ship too much for the kids (changing schools and friends having to move so often, live away from the grandparents, etc..)

I wonder if you know of any parents & families who succeed to embrace your way and ideas?

I would love to hear such stories / case-studies.

Thank you, keep on having a good life!"

I talk about the importance of knowing what freedom really means to you and how you can design it around your lifestyle and I share 3 family case studies who are all living out their own version of freedom.

I’d love for you to leave a comment below as to what freedom really means to you.

If I'm honest I think most of us dream of one day standing on stage, delivering the most epic talk of our life, to an audience that are just hanging on our every words.

Yet the jump between your current reality and making that happen can seem completely daunting.

So if you are thinking of becoming a paid speaker and spreading your message with the world, what steps do you actually need to take to land your first paid gig?

Luckily for you I bought in the highly likable and energetic Grant Baldwin who has spoken at 400 events and given literally thousands of presentations in conferences, assemblies, conventions and other events.

He's also earned over $1 million dollars in speaking fees to date!

Grant always enjoyed speaking and helping other people. So much so that he actually went to Bible college and became a youth pastor!

After several months, he decided to start a career as a speaker. He worked hard and hustled to build his business and get booked to speak.

And let me tell you he reveals a wealth of information and advice on how you can go about doing this yourself today. So listen in now!

When you are just starting out in a new profession or You're taking your business into an entirely new industry, it can be pretty challenging to find new clients.

That's the problem Malinda is facing as she embarks on a copywriting career. She emailed me with this question:

"I started reading through your book recently and I have a problem. You see I am currently trying to be a copywriter - someone who write sales material for health companies. But my problem is I'm new and having problem getting people to hire me. I don't want to have to rely on companies hiring me to have an income. I am also a stay-at-home-mom & homeschooling mom. I need an income. What would be your suggestion?".

In this Fresh in Fifteen podcast I discuss the things that I would do if I was in her position, who I would approach and where to find clients.
