  • DIFFERENTLY WIRED: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World with Deborah Reber
Dr. Dan welcomes Debbie Reber, founder of TILT Parenting. The two discuss Tilt Parenting as well as Debbie’s new book DIFFERENTLY WIRED: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World.
Debbie Reber is the founder of TiLT Parenting and host of the TiLT Parenting Podcast, which she created to support parents raising “differently-wired” kids and shift the conversation around how neurodiversity (everything from ADHD and dyslexia to Aspergers and giftedness) is perceived and experienced in the world.  Parenting is a journey filled with twists and turns. Debbie shares her personal story about raising a special needs child and how she had to learn to become present, get rid of “the shoulds” and embrace imperfection. Her lively discussion with Dr. Dan touches on regulation (for kids and parents), communication (again for kids and parents), fear, and more. Debbie’s Parent Footprint moment is honest and real, and one that will benefit all listeners. Debbie Reber is a New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, life coach, and speaker who, before creating TiLT, spent more than ten years writing inspiring books for women and teens and speaking about issues like media literacy, self-esteem, and confidence.  Debbie Reber moved her career in a more personal direction in 2016 when she founded TiLT Parenting, a website, top parenting podcast (more than 250k downloads), and social media community for parents like her who are raising differently-wired children.  She currently lives with her son and husband in the Netherlands. • The Yes Brain: How To Cultivate Courage, Curiosity, and Resilience In Your Child with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson
Dr. Dan welcomes back one of the podcast’s most popular guests -- bestselling author and parenting expert Dr. Tina Payne Bryson (http://www.tinabryson.com/) to discuss her new book The Yes Brain and her pioneering work in area of brain-based parenting. Dr. Tina Bryson is also the co-author (with Dr. Daniel Siegel) of two New York Times bestsellers (The Whole Brain Child and No Drama Discipline) and is Executive Director of the The Center for Connection in Pasadena (http://www.thecenterforconnection.org/ ).
How can parents cultivate resilience? What is a Yes Brain? What is a No Brain? What is success? How does the pressure of the need for success affect our children today?
Today Dr. Dan and Dr. Tina talk about her new book and the topic of basic brain science -- that is how a child’s brain is either receptive or reactive (affecting their regulation) and what we need to do as parents and educators to support that child’s brain state.
Ultimately parents and educators and caregivers want to move our kids from reactivity (The No Brain/Red Zone) to receptivity (The Yes Brain/Green Zone). The good news? Our kids can be taught to approach life with openness and curiosity. When kids work from a Yes Brain, they’re more willing to take chances and explore. They’re more curious and imaginative. They’re better at relationships and handling adversity. And we can make this a reality!
Dr. Dan explores the four fundamentals of the Yes Brain—balance, resilience, insight, and empathy—with Dr. Tina and how they can be fostered and strengthened in all of our children and students. How? By exploring the mind behind the behaviors in children instead of just focusing on the behavior. Dr. Dan and Dr. Tina offer listeners concrete examples of ways we can intentionally help our children achieve a state of balance -- by deliberate and thoughtful behavior modeling, positive parenting, and supportive disciplining.
Dr. Dan wraps up this episode by asking his favorite guest question -- What is Tina’s Parent Footprint Moment?  Her lesson about being present and intentionally in the moment is one she continues to revisit on her own parenting journey decades later.
Today episode is sure to be a new favorite for all Parent Footprint podcast listeners.

  • Generosity with Judy Hoberman
Dr. Dan welcomes author-expert-TedX speaker-gender expert-radio host-entrepreneur and parent Judy Hoberman to today’s show to talk about Generosity - what it is, how to spread it, and why when you give your time to others in your work life and home life you become an ambassador for good living. More about Judy:  www.walkingontheglassfloor.com
Judy’s passion for mentoring and paying it forward started when she found she was one of the only women working in insurance among a sea of male coworkers.  She wanted her work in sales to give back in a meaningful way and this transformed her life. Judy defines Generosity as this: learning how to help others in big and small ways by giving your time to others. This intention became her work’s mission: in 2007 she committed to helping one woman every single day and now she has founded the Walking on the Glass Floor Foundation to help young women in business by partnering with businesses and offering scholarships and resources.
In addition to speaking engagements as a gender expert, Judy Hoberman also lectures about how her list of seven essential leadership and work skills can have a positive impact on our personal lives and family -- especially when we model kindness as we are raising our children.
The core advice Judy talks to Dr. Dan about today is this: be a positive role model and lead by example -- be good regardless of who is watching. (Of course this philosophy is also part of the Parent Footprint mission.)  Today's discussion also tackles topics of time, work-life balance, and resilience.
Judy wraps up the show with a heartfelt discussion about her TedX talk (www.sellinginaskirt.com) on pre-judging others and a surprising Parent Footprint moment about her journey as a single Mom.
When you give your time and yourself to others it shapes you and in turn lets you live life as a good and kind person. Dr. Dan and Judy’s lively conversation will inspire listeners to do more, be better, and give generously.

  • Building Resilience in Children and Teens with Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg
In today’s much-anticipated show, Dr. Dan talks about Resilience with the incredible Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg (http://www.fosteringresilience.com/index_parents.php  and http://www.chop.edu/doctors/ginsburg-kenneth-r  and www.parentandteen.org ), a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, practicing doctor of adolescent medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and author of several books including "Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings," "Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust," "Letting Go with Love and Confidence" and proud father.
Dr. Dan and Dr. Ginsburg’s discussion is a must-listen-to for all parents and listeners will learn a lot from Dr. Ginsburg’s medical career and work with children, his passions (including being a Dad), and the third edition of his best selling book Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings.
The show starts with this powerful definition:
“Resilienceis the capacity to rise above difficult circumstances, allowing our children to exist in this less-than-perfect world, while moving forward with optimism and confidence.”
After defining resilience, Dr. Ken explains in his passionate and compelling way how parents (and other loving adults in a child’s life) are the guides and the keys to building the foundation of success for all children. In addition he reveals that the real definition of love, in his opinion, is seeing/accepting a person as who he or she is just as they are which in turn helps them see themselves.
Dr. Dan and Dr. Ken dispel many unhealthy myths about parenting including that teens don’t care what their parents think about them or that teens just don’t care about anything. What listeners learn is that parents are EVERYTHING -- especially to their adolescents. Later, they discuss when and how parents need to move away from parenting their children and how important it is to just listen.
Finally the show wraps up with a discussion of the essential “tools” our children need to navigate life and Dr. Ken’s very personal Parent Footprint moment.
Today’s show will be a revelation for all parents and caregivers.
Read more about Dr. Ginsberg below and here http://www.fosteringresilience.com/about.php Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
He also serves Philadelphia’s homeless youth as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvania. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. His goal is to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to prepare children and teens to thrive.
To advocate for parents’ critical role in raising resilient children and teens, he has appeared on CNN, NPR, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The CBS morning show, FOX and Friends and ABC, NBC, and CBS Nightly News programs.
Dr. Ginsburg lectures widely to national and international parent and professional audiences. His most recent books are, "Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings," and “Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust”, both published by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as well as “Letting Go with Love and Confidence,” published by Avery, Penguin Press. He has been humbled to work on behalf of those who serve our nation with The Military Child Education Coalition to prepare military parents, health professionals, counselors, and teachers to incorporate stress reduction and resilience building strategies for the nation’s nearly 2 million military-affiliated children. • The Homework Wars With Greg Pincus
Dr. Dan welcomes author Greg Pincus (www.gregpincus.com) to the podcast today to talk about the dreaded topic of homework! Most parents (and students) have experience with “The Homework Wars” and today Greg talks about his experience, his research, and his solutions for how parents can deal with this never-ending battle.
Greg Pincus is a novelist, poet, screenwriter, blogger, speaker, and social media consultant. He and his work have been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post and blogs and websites all around the globe. His latest novel, The Homework Strike, grew from a childhood fascination with oddball laws sparked by a book he ordered from a Scholastic Book Club flyer -- making his own childhood dream come true when Scholastic published the book!
Listeners will love Greg’s anecdotes (especially the one about a long-ago law ruling homework illegal in California!) and the discussion of the novel’s protagonist Gregory. If you have ever cheered for an underdog or stood up for what is right, then today’s podcast will make you want to grab the book and start reading.
Dr. Dan lets us all know that parents have to do what is right for their own children -- including when it involves homework. This life lesson ties in directly to Greg’s very entertaining Parent Footprint moment -- one listeners will appreciate and remember whenever they cross a street in the future!

  • Constant Craving: The Self-Reg View with Dr. Stuart Shanker
Dr. Dan welcomes back listener favorite Dr. Stuart Shanker to the 32nd episode of The Parent Footprint Podcast. https://www.facebook.com/StuartShanker2018/
International parenting expert and bestselling author Dr. Stuart Shanker (https://self-reg.ca/ ) has helped countless children and families learn about (and break) the stress cycle with his professional work and his paradigm-shifting book, SELF-REG: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage with Life (now available in paperback).
Today Dr. Dan and Dr. Shanker discuss and offer ways to tackle the ever present topic of craving and The Hook Model and how it detrimentally affects most kids today (and their parents). Listeners will recognize the fascinating science behind what happens when dopamine is triggered and how it creates stress and anxiety. There is a difference between wanting and liking. Once dopamine is triggered this craving needs an outlet and often there is none... for our children today especially with technology and social media this can be very difficult.
The biggest takeaway from today: young people are especially susceptible to cravings (dopamine triggerings) and are so easily hooked and this then leads to so much anxiety -- and that is a stressor without an outlet or ending for our children/teens. The solution will be eye opening for all parents -- Dr. Shanker gives parents the exact language to have this discussion with their own child(ren) and how to conquer it.
At the end of the episode Dr. Dan asks Dr. Shanker about his #1 piece of advice for listeners from today’s show and Dr. Shanker uses his own Parent Footprint moment about his son to illustrate how as a parent it is hard for even Dr. Shanker a self-reg “guru” to say no and that as parents we need to set limits and say no sometimes. Dr. Shanker’s recent blog dives even deeper into related information:
    https://self-reg.ca/2018/02/08/self-reg-view-constant-craving/
Dr. Stuart Shanker is a distinguished research professor emeritus of psychology and philosophy at York University and the creator of The MEHRIT Centre. He attended the University of Toronto, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees. At the University of Oxford, he obtained his D. Phil. with distinction in philosophy and his work is used globally.

  • Twice Exceptional: Supporting and Educating Bright and Creative Students with Learning Difficulties with Scott Barry Kaufman
Dr. Dan welcomes author and colleague Scott Barry Kaufman to today’s show (https://www.scottbarrykaufman.com/) to discuss Scott’s newest book Twice Exceptional (*Bonus: Dr. Dan is also a contributor!). Today’s enlightening interview is about the new book, Scott’s lifelong personal learning journey and work, and the science of studying intelligence and success (especially as it relates to giftedness and twice-exceptional individuals).
Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, is also a researcher, speaker, and podcast host. He’s is passionately interested in using psychological science to help all kinds of minds live a creative, fulfilling, and meaningful life. Scott is a professor of positive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and author and/or editor of 7 other books, including Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined and Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind (with Carolyn Gregoire). His writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Scientific American, Psychology Today, and Harvard Business Review, and he writes a blog at Scientific American called Beautiful Minds. Kaufman is also host of The Psychology Podcast.
In today’s interview Dr. Dan and Scott Barry Kaufman talk about exciting research using psychological science to help all kinds of minds live a creative, fulfilling, and meaningful life.
They also discuss how for twice-exceptional (2e) children, those kids who have extraordinary strengths coupled with learning difficulties, have difficulties in educational settings because of the paradoxical nature of their intellect and the unbending system which is ill-equipped to cater to their unique learning needs. The book Twice Exceptional: Supporting and Educating Bright and Creative Students with Learning Difficultieshttps://scottbarrykaufman.com/books/twice-exceptional-supporting-educating-bright-creative-students-learning-difficulties/ provides cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to creating an environment where twice-exceptional students can thrive.
Scott’s Parent Footprint Moment about his own Mom is personal and powerful -- and is even more meaningful to him now that he is an adult.
Finally, perhaps the big takeaway from today’s show is that when we bring greater flexibility in our approach to education, we open up a wider notion of what it means to be academically successful for all students.
