  • Will We Ever Know What Really Happened To Maggie & Paul Murdaugh?
For those who have been following the unnerving tale of Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced South Carolina attorney, each new revelation seems to twist the narrative further into the realm of the uncanny. And a recent podcast episode of "Hidden Killers" with host Tony Brueski and psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott sheds even more light on the perplexing details surrounding this case.

To recap, Alex Murdaugh, after being convicted in March for the murders of his wife and son, recently pleaded guilty to 22 financial crime charges. Yet, this only represents a fraction of the myriad charges awaiting him. But what might be even more gripping than the sheer number of legal charges is the narrative surrounding the man himself.

"It's the first time he's admitted blame in front of a judge," Brueski noted in the podcast. But the reason for his guilty plea? To "show his son [Buster] responsibility," which prompted Brueski to exclaim, "How about you decide to step up and be a dad now?"

This sentiment is echoed by Scott, who commented on the conundrum of understanding Murdaugh's psyche, stating, "In a recent interview, he said he does have the traits of a psychopath. I think we can go beyond 'he has the traits of' to 'he's a glaring example of a psychopath.'"

While the nation remains perplexed by Murdaugh's dual image - a man deeply involved in a series of crimes yet seemingly a devoted family man - the narrative becomes even more conflicting when one considers the testimony of his surviving son, Buster.

"Buster in that interview on Fox Nation, when asked, 'Do you believe he did it?', said that he did not believe his father did it," Brueski shared. "He claims that he saw the love, he saw the care, he saw a family that was not murderous."

Scott chimes in with an analysis, questioning if this is Buster's way of "trying to put the pieces together." She stated, "I can see how Buster would struggle with how to integrate the dad he felt was always loving with someone capable of doing something so monstrous."

The plot takes another turn with the introduction of Cousin Eddie Smith. According to a recent Netflix documentary, Eddie claims that Murdaugh once asked him to kill him (Murdaugh), fearing that it would soon be proven he was responsible for the murders of Maggie and Paul.

Brueski found the timing of Eddie's revelation puzzling, asking, "Why now?" Scott, skeptical of both men's honesty, responded, "My impression of Cousin Eddie is pretty much the same as Alex when it comes to telling the truth."

Indeed, the crux of the Murdaugh case is its inherent contradictions. Here we have a man, according to family friends and acquaintances, who adored his family, yet is embroiled in a series of heinous crimes and murky relationships that suggest a darker side.

In a telling comment on the enigma that is the Murdaugh case, Brueski remarked, "It's the weirdest case, I think, because of all the money and the power that this family had. And then it's just weird. I don't think anybody can wrap their head around it."

So, we're left pondering: Just how many layers are there to the Alex Murdaugh story, and can we ever truly understand the full scope of it?

  • Why Reality TV & Active BTK Investigation Don't Mix
"Can the resurgence in a cold murder case be overshadowed by the allure of reality TV fame?" This is the question on the lips of many after a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers" hosted by Tony Brueski.

Brueski spoke to psychotherapist and author, Shavaun Scott, discussing the renewed vigor in investigating a possible link between the infamous BTK killer and the unsolved disappearance of Cynthia Dawn Kinney in 1976. As the narrative goes, BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) had penned a piece titled "Bad Wash Day" during his stint as an ADT installer across from the bank where Kinney was last seen. The seeming connection has ignited a spark in Osage County under-sheriff, Eddie Vierten, who has expressed enthusiasm in procuring evidence from Wichita to explore the potential link.

“I applaud them for having this energy,” Brueski stated, referring to the efforts of the national task force, which includes BTK's own daughter. The aim is clear: to find answers and possible closure for a case that has long remained cold.

However, the commendable zeal is slightly tainted by rumors of a reality show in the works. Sheriff Gary Upton is reportedly working on a reality TV project with the CW network, scheduled to tape later this year with a prospective air date in January. Brueski voiced his reservations, remarking, “I've never heard of television working quite the way that Gary is talking about.” The implications are slightly unnerving, especially when you consider the seriousness of the crime and the pain it has inflicted on many.

Scott echoed Brueski's concerns, pointing out the potential ethical misstep of blending true crime with reality TV sensationalism. "It's not about somebody becoming famous," she emphasized, "It's really about wanting to solve this crime." A professional in her field, Scott acknowledged the ethical boundaries that all professionals should adhere to. The quest for fame, as it seems, could muddy the clear waters of justice and leave the real objectives in the backdrop.

This isn't to dismiss the efforts of investigators who step into the limelight for the sake of justice. “I do admire people who are going to step out of their own comfort zone,” Brueski noted. But there's an unsettling theatricality in the way the case has been portrayed, which Brueski likened to a Netflix miniseries with creative liberties.

Of course, there's always the human element. Cynthia Dawn Kinney's parents are still alive and yearning for answers. This reinvigorated investigation offers a glimmer of hope to them. Yet, if the allure of fame and attention overtakes the noble pursuit of justice, the consequences could be tragic.

Brueski's advice to those involved, especially those on the task force: “Be careful on the optics on this and who's driving the ship.” Shavaun Scott concurred, stressing the importance of adhering to ethical guidelines and maintaining clarity on the main goal - solving the crime.

The case's revival raises pertinent questions about the ethical implications of mixing crime-solving with entertainment. Are the boundaries between seeking justice and gaining fame becoming too blurred?

So, as listeners grapple with the new information and opinions, we are left pondering: "Where should the line be drawn between crime-solving as a public duty and as a form of entertainment?"

  • How Did Ruby Franke's Husband Ignore the Alleged Abuse Of His Wife?
When a loved one is responsible for grave misconduct, would you notice? A recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers" delved into the puzzling dynamics of the Ruby Hildebrandt case, raising questions about her husband's knowledge and involvement.

Ruby Hildebrandt’s parenting methods, as described in the podcast, bordered on the sadistic. Host Tony Brueski referenced her husband's claims that he is now focused on doing what's best for his kids, following the revelations. He wishes to rebuild relationships and even heal past traumas without indulging in the blame game.

Shavaun Scott, a psychotherapist and author, weighed in on the matter. "Clearly he was present when the parenting was going on, at least a lot of it, the very punitive and strict and almost sadistic ways that Ruby treated the children." Scott highlighted the complexities of realizing the severity of a situation when the perpetrator is someone close to you.

Ruby’s husband, despite being an academically accomplished individual, seemed to have lacked insight into his wife’s actions. "You can be a very intelligent person and have zero insight," said Scott. This observation brings forth a significant concern: the husband's possible victimhood. Was he also under Ruby's manipulative hold or genuinely oblivious to the ongoing abuse?

The podcast hinted at a wider audience becoming aware of the abuse through a YouTube channel, while Ruby’s husband seemingly remained in the dark. It suggested a theory wherein Ruby, much like Laurie Daybell, another infamous case discussed, utilized her charming persona and particular use of language to veil her sinister actions. Scott added, "It could confuse a person who doesn’t have a lot of insight, and who knows the ways that their relationship operated and the ways that she took the power and control."

The profound damage done to the children is undeniable, but Scott sees a potential silver lining in therapy. Addressing the husband’s possible realization, she said, "Maybe, you know, it is a light bulb moment for him." However, acknowledging the wrongdoings is only the first step. True reparation will undoubtedly be a long and strenuous journey, especially with the children.

She ended her analysis with a poignant remark, expressing intrigue in taking him on as a therapy patient. "It may sound odd, but this would be a fun one looking at it as a therapist to try to do some therapy with him and see how much insight he can really develop."

So, as we delve deeper into this unsettling narrative of the Ruby Hildebrandt case, the question remains: How often do individuals remain blind to the actions of their loved ones, and when they do see, is it ever too late to make amends?

  • Is Kouri Richins Incapable Of Telling The Truth?
When we hear of heinous crimes, they are often accompanied by a web of lies. But what happens when those lies are so brazen, they seem more like the fantasies of a novelist than the desperate attempts of a suspect trying to manipulate her way out? Recent discussions on the "Hidden Killers" podcast between Tony Brueski and psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott tried to unpack just that.

"Just the other week, we got a chance to read Kouri Richon's letter from the jail cell... She came back with the excuse of it is simply a part of a book," Tony began, setting the stage for a puzzling look into Kouri's psyche. The letter, potentially aimed at witness tampering, quickly changed its nature in Kouri's eyes to being part of a fictional narrative she was penning.

However, Shavaun Scott didn't buy it. As she put it bluntly, "This is someone who seems to have a slight problem with lying... This was an incredibly stupid thing for her to do." The conversation navigated the blurry waters of Kouri's compulsion to lie. Is this a classic case of a compulsive liar, or something even more intricate?

A deeper dive into Kouri's character presents us with a cocktail of narcissism and histrionics. "She really does. And this is the mark of somebody... she loves attention, you know? So the histrionic narcissistic personality stuff. It really seems pretty glaring with her," said Shavaun. These cluster B traits, as the psychotherapist described them, are usually associated with an over-inflated ego, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy.

But how did Kouri reach this point? Was she always this way, or did a series of enabling behaviors encourage her already present tendencies? Tony posed an interesting hypothesis, "Is it because for so long? Their B. S. Was just accepted and was just basically enabled over and over again?" Shavaun didn't skip a beat, confirming that this manipulative behavior "starts in childhood... This has been their style in life, and it works for them up to a certain point."

Indeed, Kouri's descent into crime could very well be the consequence of years of unchecked behaviors. Her ability to fabricate a reality might have been tolerated, or even entertained, for so long that she genuinely believed her own tales. As Tony put it, "It seems that where there may have been a chance earlier on of her getting off on this, the quite often it is the motions after the fact, the decisions that are made after the fact of the crime end up implicating her and incriminating her far more than just the crime itself."

The discussion provided a rare lens into the mind of an individual who, to the outside world, seems to be living in her own version of reality. The takeaway? The layers of lies, while they might initially serve to protect, often end up being a person's undoing.

But here's a question that remains - If unchecked and enabled lies can lead to one's downfall, what responsibility does society bear in letting individuals like Kouri believe their own fabrications for so long?

  • Why Were Odenistic Clues Ignored By Delphi Investigators?
In a riveting episode of "Hidden Killers," Tony Brueski delves deep into the perplexing details surrounding a recent crime scene with psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. The scene, as described, is nothing short of chilling: ritualistic markings, runes on bodies, and blood allegedly painted on a tree, suggesting an odinistic ritualistic killing.

"The scary thing is some of the connections that are made in the defense letter... It checks out," Brueski reveals, pointing to the involvement of individuals deeply entrenched in the odinistic religion. Their social media profiles, laden with odinistic symbols and references, further solidify the connection. More alarmingly, evidence, including a potential confession to a girlfriend, seems to have been overlooked, leading to Richard Allen's arrest.

Scott, while intrigued, approaches the topic with a healthy dose of skepticism. "It's just not common," she remarks, questioning the logic of a criminal leaving behind such blatant clues. Drawing from her knowledge, she recalls a similar case in California where three teenage boys committed a satanic ritualistic murder. "They left a trail a mile long," she notes, emphasizing the irrationality of such acts.

Brueski, grappling with the gravity of the situation, poses a question that many are likely pondering: "If anyone is participating in this sort of thing... what are they believing that they're getting out of that?" Scott's response paints a grim picture. She suggests that such acts might be the result of psychotic tendencies, where individuals are completely detached from reality. "This kind of thing is getting into psychosis," she states, emphasizing the sheer irrationality of ritualistic killings.

The conversation takes a darker turn as the duo delves into the possibility of group involvement. While it's one thing for an individual to be swayed by psychotic tendencies, the idea of a group collectively participating in such heinous acts is even more unsettling. Brueski points out, "We see it in movies... I think we think that this doesn't really go on in reality." Scott, however, reminds listeners of the Manson family's ritualized killings, highlighting the potential for impaired individuals to commit unspeakable acts under the right influence.

As the episode concludes, one thing is clear: while ritualistic killings rooted in ancient religions like Odinism are rare, they are not entirely unheard of. Scott's insights serve as a chilling reminder that while such acts are "pretty darn uncommon," they do, unfortunately, occur.

In a world where ancient beliefs intersect with modern crimes, how do we differentiate between genuine religious practices and sinister misinterpretations?

  • What Is Odenism and How Does It Relate To Delphi Murders?
Could a misunderstood ancient religion be the key to unraveling the Delphi murder case?
In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," Tony Brueski delves into the perplexing Delphi murder case with psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. The conversation centers around the arrest of Richard Allen and the potential involvement of a group practicing Odinism, an ancient Norse religion. But as the details unfold, the lines between pop culture, white supremacy, and genuine religious beliefs become increasingly blurred.

"Odinism is what is in question," Brueski states, highlighting the defense's claim of a potential cover-up involving those guarding Richard Allen. He admits, "I've not known anything about Odinism," despite its Norse origins. Scott elaborates on the recent resurgence of Odinism in pop culture, attributing its popularity to TV shows like "Vikings." However, she points out a concerning trend: "The white supremacist movement did kind of latch on... to this pagan Norse God kind of thing."

The conversation takes a turn when Brueski questions the attraction of extremist groups to ancient religions. Scott suggests that such groups often seek a sense of belonging and identity. "They reject traditional Christianity and Judaism... and they've just attached to this idea that they're somehow closer affiliated with the Norse gods," she explains. The influence of TV shows, she believes, can't be underestimated, especially on "weak-minded people."

But how does this relate to the Delphi murder case? The defense's narrative suggests a ritualistic killing connected to Odinism. Brueski, taken aback by the term "sacrificial killing," asks Scott about the plausibility of such claims. Scott is skeptical: "I do think we would know... if there had been multiple murders committed by a pagan religious group or Odinists... This has never even been speculative before."

Scott further questions the defense's strategy, suggesting that the introduction of Odinism might be a desperate attempt to introduce doubt. "Is this something that we really need to be looking into? Apparently, we need to look into it, but the odds are, in my view, that this is... another creative defense attorney trying to come up with something that's pretty indefensible," she opines.

The episode concludes with both Brueski and Scott pondering the implications of the defense's claims. While the connection between Odinism, white supremacy, and the Delphi murder case remains tenuous, it's clear that the trial will be closely watched, with many awaiting answers to the myriad of questions raised.

As the lines between ancient religions, pop culture, and criminal defense blur, one must wonder: How will the Delphi murder case reshape our understanding of these intersections?
