  • MWH 199 : Learning To Love Your Struggles with Tessa Hartnett

It’s really easy to assume that success in business happens over night, but in reality it doesn’t. Building your business and taking the leap into entrepreneurship is not always shiny. Sometimes it’s having to share a single coffee with your hubby because it’s all you can afford and other times it’s having to move to another country because the cost of living is less.

These are things my dear friend, Tessa Hartnett and her husband Nathan, did when they were starting and growing their businesses.

Tessa is a 7 figure entrepreneur who is e-commerce obsessed with over 12 years of experience in the field. She’s currently running a total of 11 stores with her husband and loves to travel with her family.

Something we really want to touch on during this episode is the less shiny parts of entrepreneurship because there are many challenging times while you’re growing your business from the ground up and more often than not those times are not spoken about.

  • MWH 198 : Ask Me Anything – Celebrating 4 Years of the MWH Podcast
Ask Me Anything - Celebrating 4 Years of the MWH Podcast

Pop the champagne ’cause the Mums With Hustle Podcast is celebrating 4 years of the Mums With Hustle Podcast with another episode where Karl, my husband, is interviewing me with questions my listeners emailed in!

Today’s podcast episode is going to be a little cheeky and off the cuff since I had no idea what questions I was going to be asked.

So without further ado, let’s get into it!
    KEY TAKEAWAYS:
    >> [0:22] I’m honestly a bit scared to be coming to you from the studio today because apparently Karl and my sneaky assistant, Lara, hi-jacked my inbox requesting that you send in any questions you may have so that Karl can interview ME!

    >> [2:53] Can you believe that it has been four incredible years since starting the Mums With Hustle Podcast? I’m so grateful and very thankful for every single one of you listening to this podcast, for leaving reviews, and for being a pivotal part of the Mums With Hustle community.

    >> [4:40] Hannah from @themindsetmama asked, “How did you decide podcast over blog? What made you just launch into it with full faith in yourself?”

I actually had a blog and podcast when I first started! I decided that I would post a blog and podcast once a week, so I had committed to doing two pieces of core content every week.
After about two years, I leaned into the content that I enjoyed creating the most which is the podcast! It’s my preferred communication style in general because it builds a relationship much quicker.
From day one, I focused on “how is this action going to help the most amount of people?”

    >> [7:49] Sandra from @hashtaginstaprints asked, “What does Tracy do to stay on top of her mental health?”

Looking after my mental health is a top priority for me because a few years ago I was diagnosed with severe anxiety, mild depression and acute stress.
Every single day, I always do something very small just for me. Once a fortnight, I like to go and get my hair washed and blow dried. Karl is really good at giving me an uninterrupted coffee.
I dove deep into understand who I truly am at a soul level, not who I think I’m supposed to be for other people. I also continue working towards knowing what my core needs are as a human, and I set boundaries.

    >> [10:27] Melanie from @forevertoyshop wants to know, “What should someone never do on an Instagram Stories post?”

I love being a business rebel and shaking things up by just being you.
Don’t be something you’re not and don’t think you have to play a certain roll.
Something I really cringe at is when people name or shame other businesses or customers. It’s not a good look to get ranty! Ask yourself, “Is this the best way to go about this?”
Be yourself. Be authentically. If you’re on Instagram for business, then know why you’re there.

    >> [13:16] Karen asked, “What has been the most challenging experience in business so far?“

There are so many challenging experiences! Every time you add something new that leads to growth feels, it will feel so hard and heavy.
Having to say goodbye to people on your team, really hurts. But it’s a part of stepping into your role as a leader.
Sometimes projects don’t come to fruition because there are red flags or your intuition pops up and it’s telling you it isn’t right.
Being willing to make tough calls in your business.

    >> [15:28] Mel from @fortheloveofsorted_mel asked, “Do you ever have days where everything is “too hard” and you want to be alone for a hot minute? If so - what do you do?”

I totally do, and I always give myself that time! As I’ve said before, I only have three things on my to-do list per day.

How This Single Mum Mastered Her Mindset (Part 3/3 In Our Special Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship Series)

Your mindset is everything when it comes to living the life of your dreams!

I honestly get a little giddy every time I sit down with one of my Social Method Society members to talk about how far they've come in their entrepreneurial journey. I can already feel the butterflies, and I haven't even introduced today's guest who is extremely driven and the blood of an entrepreneur courses through her!

Today's guest is Wilhelmina Ford! Willo is the creator of ShareAbode, a platform that connects single parents for co-living so they can share the cost of rent and expenses and gain friendship and support emotionally and logistically.

During this episode, Willo is going to explore her motherhood journey and share how she has overcome her money mindset blocks a single mum who is running a non-profit. And in true Mums With Hustle fashion, Willo is going to dive into her best mum hacks or household hacks that has helped make her dream come alive.
    Key Takeaways:
    >> [0:23] Today’s podcast episode is part three of my three part special When Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship. If you’ve missed part one and part two, please feel free to go back and listen to MWH 195 : Building Your Business Around Your Life with Jennifer Berson of Jeneration PR and MWH 196 : My Best Tips For Working At Home With Toddlers. You’ll find those episodes inspiring and full of takeaways, so you may want to take notes!

    >> [03:26] Today's guest is Wilhelmina Ford! Willo is the creator of ShareAbode, a platform that connects single parents for co-living so they can share the cost of rent and expenses and gain friendship and support emotionally and logistically.

    >> [03:58] During this episode, Willo is going to explore her motherhood journey and share how she has overcome her money mindset blocks a single mum who is running a non-profit. And in true Mums With Hustle fashion, Willo is going to dive into her best mum hacks or household hacks that has helped make her dream come alive.

    >> [05:28] Willo has always been very entrepreneurial driven; however, when her son was born she lost her passion around her first business. When Willo fell pregnant the second time, she started to have an outgrowth of who she used to be. Over the course of her being pregnant with her second, she decided to sell her business and she left her abusive partner.
    Willo's Mindset Breakthrough
    >> [10:10] During this life altering change, Willo had a mindset breakthrough. She realised that maybe everything she was going through was actually the road to get her to where she was meant to be.

    >> [11:08] Parenthood is a personal growth journey in and of itself. Willo was in a place where she didn’t know anyone and there was a lot of pressure as a single mum.

    >> [12:55] I really wanted to explore Willo’s motherhood journey a bit more.
What are some of blocks that Willo had around motherhood?

Willo didn’t think she was worthy of having a relationship with a man who was actually good.
She burst through this block because of fear. Fear doesn’t have to hold you back, it CAN be a massive catalyst for change.

    >> [16:56] Willo founded her not-for profit, ShareAbode, to give safe and affordable housing to other single mums and dads. ShareAbode is that passion reignited that I’d lost and that's because it was created from experience, from my pain points as a single mum.

    >> [20:30] How has Willo managed to overcome money mindset blocks as a single mum when building her business? She has started this business without the intention of making money.

    >> [22:42] Willo’s money story always comes back to her self worth.

  • MWH 196 : My Best Tips For Working At Home With Toddlers (Part 2/3 In Our Special Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship Series)
My Best Tips For Working At Home With Toddlers

Working at home with babies and toddlers is not an easy feat, but it doesn’t have to be difficult either. During today’s episode, I’m going to be sharing how I spend my time working in my business and my best tips for working at home when your children are still there with you.

If you pick up any theme from today’s message, I hope it’s that you understand the importance of knowing who you are, honouring that, and treating yourself with respect for where you are now in your entrepreneurial journey.
    Key Takeaways:
    >> [0:29] Today’s podcast episode is part two of a three part special that covers when Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship. If you’ve missed part one, please feel free to go back and listen to episode MWH 195 : Building Your Business Around Your Life with Jennifer Berson of Jeneration PR. I had a really enlightening conversation with Jen all about how she navigated the early days of starting her business, how those days looked differently once her kids were born, and what her support network looked like.

    >> [2:36] During today’s episode, I’m going to be sharing my best tips for working at home with babies and toddlers.

    >> [2:56] I want to start this episode off with the disclaimer that we’re all unique and we’re all different. We need to honour exactly who we are at this given moment in time. I’m purely sharing what has worked for me, so it helps one person. I’m not some guru when it comes to this sort of thing, but what I’m sharing is what I have learned and put into practice over the last four years of being a business owner.

    >> [5:01] I only aim to get three things done in one day. Some days I feel like I’m more in flow and I can bust out so much stuff, but then there are other days where I can only get one task done. Life is full of expectations, and we are putting expectations on other people and on ourselves. You are the one that is putting the expectations on yourself. I’ve come up a “rule” of three and it makes me feel really good when I get things done.

HOW I BREAK UP THE THREE THINGS I DO THROUGHOUT THE DAY:

One thing I work on every day is something be related to marketing.
Then, I work on something that generates income. I do this because if it’s income generating, it’s also impact generating.
I try to learn something new every day. My third thing is always related to self-development.

    >> [10:09] Be aware of the expectations you’re setting on yourself.

    >> [10:43] Master your mind and the way you were designed to think. You can do this by getting to know yourself! Investing in yourself in terms of self-awareness and mindset. For instance, I know when my brain and energy is best for performing at executing tasks throughout different times during the day.

    >> [12:56] Your “Hour of Power” is actually something different when it comes to performance and entrepreneurship. It’s that time during your day when your’e the most energetically charged and things aren’t heavy.

    >> [15:45] Don’t punish yourself if you don’t meet your own expectations. It’s okay if your’e building your business at a slower pace.

    >> [16:58] During my eldest’s first two years of life, he was a serial cat napper. I couldn’t rely on getting a solid one or two hours.
HOW DO I STRUCTURE MY DAY?

I leaned into the Pomodoro Technique where you work for a solid 20 minutes followed by a 5 minute break where you do something completely different.
It’s important to know what you’re going to do during those 20 minutes.

    >> [20:05] If you’re not a member of the Social Method Society, you can jump on the waitlist HERE.

    >> [21:06] I had old beliefs about what “work time” meant to me and that belief had me trapped.

Building Your Business Around Your Life - Part 1/3 In Our Special Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship Series

The element of having young children around all the time when you’re trying to grow your business can really be a trying journey, but it doesn't have to be hard.

Today’s podcast episode is actually part one a three part series of When Motherhood Meets Entrepreneurship that I’ll be exploring with you here on the podcast.

This episode features a friend of mine who is going to inspire and empower you like crazy, so let’s dive right into it!

Today’s guest is a mum, a powerhouse, a PR guru, and the one woman who is hailed as all three, is sitting on the virtual couch for today's podcast episode. I'm very excited to have an honest conversation about motherhood and entrepreneurship with my friend Jennifer Berson.

During this episode, Jen's opening up about her motherhood and entrepreneurship journey. She's going to share how she navigated the early days of starting her business, how those days looked differently once her kids were born, what her support network looked like, and of course a DIY PR strategy for Mums With Hustle Podcast listeners.
    Key Takeaways:
    >> [3:51] Jen really wanted to be a present parent and when she looked around at her full-time career, she saw she had no role model. That’s when she realised she was going down the wrong path. She knew that her current career wouldn’t let her have it all or leave her feeling fulfilled.

    >> [5:42] Jen’s family was not supportive of her taking this swift career change. So she had to come to terms that her ultimate happiness was based on how she felt and how she wanted to spend her time. It was never about doing the things that make her parents happy. When she did tell her parents she was leaving her job in law, they were filled with fear.

    >> [10:01] When things don’t go as planned, Jen feel okay with that. Jen has always been proactive to make things happen for her.
    Jen's Business Journey
    >> [11:40] About 10 months in to her being a new mum, Jen invested in a nanny. She learned how to be laser focused so she could prioritise the things that matter to her and her clients. Jen also learned how to say no to the opportunities that took her away from her family.

    >> [13:40] Jen defines success of being able to have ownership of her time. Having her own business allowed her to take the time to fight for her son (who was diagnosed with Autism) to have a program for him in the school system.

    >> [18:19] We think we’re the best solution for our children, but it’s really good for our children to be around other kids. Jen is 100% open to having help with her children. Once Jen knew she needed it, she reached out to get support.

    >> [21:48] Feeling guilty for needing help is not productive, and it’s not a way to move your business forward.

    >> [23:48] Young mums in business have the feeling that they’ve got to do it all. So I’ve asked Jen to share her best advice for mums who are just starting out in business.
What is Jen’s best advice for young mums in business?

You can’t do it all, and that’s okay. Ask for help when you need it. Most spouses want to be helpful, but they don’t know how to help you if you’re not clear with what you need.
Make sure you’re taking time for yourself through self-care.
Celebrate your wins (even the tiny ones).

    >> [25:54] It's obvious that Jen has a place in her heart for entrepreneurs whose stage and budget do not allow for PR services. I asked Jen to share her best tips on how to DIY your own PR strategy! The good news is that PR is much more simple than you think.
How to DIY Your PR Strategy:

Start out with the mindset that the people on the other side of your pitch are just people...
