In this episode, Dr. Jade explains some good practices if you are trying to lose fat while also building (or maintaining) muscle mass, also called ‘body recomposition’. First, it’s important to know that individuals who are just starting in the gym will accomplish body recomposition easier than those who are intermediate or advanced lifters.

Secondly, when it comes to nutrition, people who are trying to lose fat while building muscle should be focusing on a few key things: protein intake – extremely important to give the muscle a reason to maintain its shape; veggies – they will give you the right amount of nutrients that the body requires while in this process; water intake – fundamental to keep the body hydrated and also of great value to help with fat loss.

When it comes to workouts, Dr. Jade explains that beginners should be doing something along the lines of ‘full body workouts’ while more advanced lifters might separate their workouts into body parts, for example, Monday: chest & back / Tuesday: legs & calves / Wednesday: shoulders & arms, and so on…

Base level humans are usually guided by the thought that they are the center of the universe (much like how children think). Culture level humans always need to be part of a group and are guided by the thought that the opposite group is often wrong. Next level humans understand that the common good is what matters and are constantly working for a healthy debate and a healthy integration.

In this episode, Dr. Jade talks about the concept of using the things that once hurt us – and the hate derived from them – to be better people. It’s important to remember that we all have a choice: we can be destroyed and worn out by those hurtful experiences or we can use them as fuel to become heroes. This concept also creates a connection between staying in the “base level” stage and achieving the “next level” stage.

In addition, Dr. Jade explains that we can all use hurt in life the same way as we use compliments: being aware of it and recognizing it in ourselves. Another significant course of action is learning from the pain, creating something good from it, and helping other individuals who are going through the same thing. This is the only way to deal with hurt/hate: quitting the victim mentality and taking sole responsibility for our wounds.

In this episode, Dr. Jade talks about the connection between metabolism and stress, weight loss activities, and also a new approach to dieting, which main idea is inspired by a study. In this study, a group of men was given only 300 calories to be consumed daily (in two different forms). They also had to walk several miles during the day (slow walks). The weight loss results after 4 days were profound.

On metabolism and stress, Dr. Jade explains that the metabolism’s main responsibility is to keep you alive and for that reason, it can adapt and adjust as your daily habits change. That’s why what we do with our bodies daily matters: what we eat and how we move, for example, are two of the most important factors. The metabolism also can adapt to stress, acting more like a thermostat than a calculator. Tune in!

Today, Dr. Jade speaks about the concept of the three imperatives of a next level human. As we all know from the show’s intro, loving, teaching, and learning are the foundation to living a life with purpose and the key actions in order to feel more fulfilled. Different from what is known as ‘base level humans’ and ‘culture level humans’, a next level human finds these three ideas to be the most important aspects of life.

Learning is potentially the only thing in the world we need to keep doing as time passes on. When we stop learning, we stop growing and the lessons learned can be a huge asset to facing what life throws at us. Teaching is fundamental to pass to the next generation – or to other people – these lessons. In this episode, Dr. Jade shares the audio version of chapter 5 of his book ‘Next Level Metabolism’. In this chapter, Dr. Jade explains how your metabolism will respond to each one of the combinations you can make with training and dieting. There are four toggles when it comes to metabolism: eat more and exercise more, eat less and exercise less, eat more and exercise less, and eat less and exercise more.

Each one of these four modalities serves a specific goal, works with specific types of metabolism, and is better for specific types of body compositions. Understanding and comprehending these four aspects and how they can work for you is the best approach when it comes to weight loss and muscle gain. The fifth modality, ‘eat some, exercise some’, works as a maintenance phase and can also be extremely effective health-wise.

Also, human beings deal with problems constantly, are constantly feeling pressure from the external environment, and sometimes face extreme difficulties such as being on the streets, having addictions, suffering abuse, etc.

Making a parallel with a personal story, Dr. Jade questions what is like to be a hero, what it means to be a hero, and how to recognize the virtues of one. The things that happen to us – the good and the bad – make us a victim or a hero and we have the opportunity to choose which one we will embody. Life can take us to tortuous paths but it’s important to remember that wherever we are, there is always a chance to be a hero, right?
