In this week’s On My Sleeve episode, you’re hearing the full, raw details of what it actually feels like to be leaving teaching. How it feels, why I chose to leave, and whether or not I regret my decision.
“I think many people think that leaving teaching is taking the easy way out. Things got too hard, we aren’t treated right, we don’t get paid enough. But those aren’t the reasons why I’m leaving. I knew going into the job how teachers are treated, how much I was going to get paid, how much I’d work outside of contract hours to make sure my group of kids knew every single thing they needed to, only to lose hours of sleep leading up to state testing worrying about this kid or that kid and if they will come to school having eaten and gotten rest and ready to show 'em what we know.
I didn’t leave teaching because it’s hard. And being on this side of things now I don’t think it’s the easy way out. I think leaving is harder than staying.”
