  • On Vaccines and Vaccinology, in COVID and Beyond
    with @rvenkayya @jorgecondebio
WHEN are we going to have a COVID-19 vaccine, and how the heck are we going from 12 years of vaccine development compressed into 12 months or so? What will and won’t be compromised here, and where do new technologies (like mRNA) come in? Where will vaccines likely be distributed first; who will and won't get them initially; how do we maintain not just safety and efficacy of vaccines but trust and transparency when it comes to mis/information? We may actually see the emergence of a "Neo Anti-Vaxxer"... but we may also be entering a renaissance for vaccinology after this pandemic.

  • #452: Sia — The Alchemy of Blockbuster Songs, Billions of Views, and the Face You’ve Never Seen
Sia — The Alchemy of Blockbuster Songs, Billions of Views, and the Face You’ve Never Seen | Brought to you by Athletic Greens, LinkedIn Jobs, and Thrive Market.
“I don’t think that I’m necessarily like a super-talented songwriter. I think I’m just really productive. One out of 10 songs is a hit. So where a lot of people will spend three weeks on one song, I will write 10 in three weeks.” — Sia
Sia (@sia) is an Australian singer, songwriter, director, screenwriter, and pop icon. Her current single, Together, is from her forthcoming album and motion picture, Music, due out later this year. In 2019, Sia partnered with Diplo and Labrinth to form the group LSD. Their debut album, Labrinth, Sia & Diplo Present…LSD has one billion+ streams to date. She released the Grammy-nominated This Is Acting (Monkey Puzzle/RCA Records) in 2016 to much critical acclaim and cemented her role as one of today’s biggest stars and sought-after live performers with her sold-out Nostalgic for the Present headline tour.
Sia has more videos in YouTube’s Billion Views Club than any other female on the planet. Her massive single Cheap Thrills was a multi-format global radio hit and one of the longest-running singles in the Top 40 in 2016. Along with her own successes, Sia has written global smashes for today’s biggest acts, including Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and many more.

  • #233 Hunting, Death, & Taking Notes - Steve Rinella
    Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
    • When it comes to writing, the sum is greater than the parts:
      • “None of the instruments mean anything in absence of the orchestra” – Steven Rinella
        • Writing beautiful prose is great, but if the sentences don’t flow well and tell an amazing story, the writing isn’t worth much
    •  As a hunter, Steve has had a lot of encounters with death:
      • “I think that I’m hyperaware of death and how it comes” – Steven Rinella
        • “I have very close proximity to it…I think that a lot of people don’t haven’t had that but if they did, they would view everything in their life differently”
          • When you observe the process of life to death, you start to look at the world differently
            • “I have a hyper-realistic sense of what it means to be alive, like what goes into life”
    • Since COVID hit, many people moved out of big cities into less populated areas like Montana
      • This also means more game licenses are going to be sold. Wisconsin sold 40% more fishing licenses this Spring than a year ago.
        • Since people can’t travel out of the country and most events and festivals have been canceled, more people are going camping, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

In this episode, Joan and Nir discuss their extensive research into rapamycin (including the category of analogs to rapamycin known as rapalogs) and metformin, respectively. Based on his work with metformin, Nir shares how he believes it could be a pro-longevity drug and the clinical trial he’s leading to test this belief. Joan discusses her work with rapalogs, their ability to suppress the immune system as well as provide immune-enhancement, and the clinical trials she has led that inform her insights. We also talk about the potential beneficial roles of both metformin and rapamycin in reducing mortality from COVID-19, reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, and delaying aging as well as its related diseases.

    We discuss:

    • Joan’s career, interest in aging, and work with rapamycin analogs [3:45];
