  • Knowledge Project: #52 Peaceful Parenting
    Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
    • The three keys to peaceful parenting:
      • Regulate your own emotions
        • “Our ability to self-regulate might have the biggest impact on who our child turns out to be compared to anything else we do”
      • Connect with your kids
      • Coach instead of punish
    • When your child has an outburst:
      • Take a deep breath and acknowledge your own feelings
      • Remind yourself there’s no urgency
      • Remind yourself that the child is just experiencing a feeling and it’s not permanent
      • Remind yourself that the child is actually allowed to have feelings
      • Just be curious – you don’t have to jump in with a solution
    • A great way to think about parenting:
      • Think of it as functioning it from a place of where you’re the leader, leading from the heart with compassion, all the while supporting your child to be their best self
    • All kids need the same things from their parents:
      • To know they’re acceptable exactly as they are
      • To know that no matter what, their parents will be there to help them, take care of them, protect them, give them food and shelter, and emotional/physical love
      • To be delighted in
    • Consider that the next time your partner comes to you with a problem, maybe they don’t want a solution – perhaps they just want someone to listen to them and someone to vent to
    • If possible, try to work out your conflicts with your spouse/partner in front of the child…peacefully of course
      • This allows the child to see how conflict should be handled and mitigated
    • Spend more time in nature
    • Kids should be waking up on their own, without an alarm clock, and without you waking them up
      • If they aren’t, they’re not getting enough sleep

  • Tim Ferriss Show: #361: Jim Collins — A Rare Interview with a Reclusive Polymath
"I'm not really a business author; I just happen to have used companies as the method to study human systems because there's great data." — Jim Collins
My guest for this episode is the incredible (and somewhat reclusive) Jim Collins.
This was a rare treat, as Jim rarely does any media or interviews. I’ve wanted to speak with him for more than a decade, and it was worth the wait. This conversation overdelivered on every level. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
    So, who is Jim Collins?
Jim Collins (jimcollins.com) is a student and teacher of what makes great companies tick, and a Socratic advisor to leaders in the business and social sectors. He has authored or coauthored eight books that have together sold 10+ million copies worldwide, including Good to Great, Good to Great and the Social Sectors, Built to Last, How the Mighty Fall, Great by Choice, and his newest work, Turning the Flywheel.
Driven by a relentless curiosity, Jim began his research and teaching career on the faculty at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992. In 1995, he founded a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado.
In 2017, Forbes selected Jim as one of the 100 Greatest Living Business Minds.
Jim is also an avid rock climber and has completed single-day ascents of El Capitan and Half Dome in Yosemite Valley.
This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn and its job recruitment platform, which offers a smarter system for the hiring process. If you've ever hired anyone (or attempted to), you know finding the right people can be difficult. If you don't have a direct referral from someone you trust, you're left to use job boards that don't offer any real-world networking approach.
LinkedIn, as the world's largest professional network -- used by more than 70 percent of the US workforce -- has a built-in ecosystem that allows you to not only search for employees, but also interact with them, their connections, and their former employers and colleagues in a way that closely mimics real-life communication. Visit LinkedIn.com/Tim and receive a $50 credit toward your first job post!
This podcast is also brought to you by Peloton, which has become a staple of my daily routine. I picked up this bike after seeing the success of my friend Kevin Rose, and I've been enjoying it more than I ever imagined. Peloton is an indoor cycling bike that brings live studio classes right to your home. No worrying about fitting classes into your busy schedule or making it to a studio with a crazy commute.
New classes are added every day, and this includes options led by elite NYC instructors in your own living room. You can even live stream studio classes taught by the world's best instructors, or find your favorite class on demand.
Peloton is offering listeners to this show a special offer. Visit onepeloton.com and enter the code TIM at checkout to receive $100 off accessories with your Peloton bike purchase. This is a great way to get in your workouts, or an incredible gift. Again, that's onepeloton.com and enter the code TIM.

  • Venture Stories: A Primer on Remote Work and Distributed Teams with Matt Mullenweg and Andreas Klinger
On this episode Erik is joined by Matt Mullenweg (@photomatt), founder of Wordpress and Automattic, as well as Andreas Klinger (@andreasklinger), VP of Engineering at CoinList and a founding team member of Product Hunt (along with Erik).
At Automattic, Matt works with over 850 employees working remotely in 70-plus countries. The three of them discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a distributed team, and why it is the future for knowledge work. Matt explains his quote that “every company over 100 people is already distributed, they just pretend they’re not.”
They talk about some of the best protocols for managing distributed workers and why being able to pull from worldwide talent is such a big advantage. They mention that Invision, a large and successful company with distributed workers, requires everyone to work on Eastern Time. Matt points out that they don’t use email at Automattic and instead use their own custom tools. They also talk about some of the modifications to current collaboration tools that they’d like to see.
The three of them also talk about why many of the “issues” surrounding remote work are not actually issues unique to remote work but are part of knowledge work in general. They also discuss some of the challenges of remote work, including ensuring clear communication, gauging the quality of potential hires without the usual local signals, and dealing with distractions.
