Many farmers think the solution to them getting and retaining customers is a better or different website. Or a BETTER email marketing program. Or the NEW social media platform, if only they could learn it. But that is not how to build a loyal, consistent customer base. At first glance you might think these things are too simple to work. Like, there must be a more high-tech solution I'm missing. But there is no online solution to this problem. The solution is in today's podcast episode. Decide today to implement what I talk about here - these steps are all free/cheap. Then repeat them consistently and watch your new customers arrive and your current customers become super loyal. I started the farm because I watched my family heal from chronic illnesses after eating the products I raise. I then got to witness my property go from a weed-infested dirt lot, over-grazed by horses, to a thriving mini-ecosystem. And over the years, I've helped hundreds, if not thousands of families in my community find health, connection, and joy at my farm. But at the end of the day, my farm is still a business, and every business needs customers. In 2009 I brought home my first milk cow, and I was sold out of milk and kept a waiting list of customers ever since for 10 years. When I raised a big batch of Thanksgiving turkeys every year, they're all pre-sold by September, with one email. Whether it's eggs, grass-fed beef, pastured chickens or pork, I always had a loyal community eager and excited customers ready to buy. That's the dream, right? Also, the most rewarding thing I've ever done, thank goodness, or I couldn't have done it another day! You know exactly what I mean. Now I teach farmers every day how to create a store full of customers who love you, your farm, and never question your prices and even encourage you to charge what you need to. And guess what? We think we don't deserve time off, or we haven't earned the right to pay ourselves yet. Many farmers tell me they are burdened by this constant feeling that they aren't doing anything quite good enough - the farm, the marketing, or being a mom & wife. This constant feeling of not being good enough makes building a profitable farm impossible. You read that right. You can't get to a profitable farm, your marketing won't work, if you don't figure out how to change your thoughts about yourself. I teach Advanced Marketing Strategies - but those strategies will not work if you're not in a place mentally where you have your own back. Where you give yourself compassion and confidence with ease. As I get older I notice the "things" I cherish most in life are my close relationships. Studies even show that our level of life-fulfillment directly correlates to how connected and close we feel to people in our lives. Isn't that fascinating - that the depth of your relationships is what determines life-fulfillment!! AND, another fascinating thing - having deeply connected relationships is a learned skill. A skill we aren't taught anywhere in our life, usually. We usually wait 'til a relationship is broken to go get help - and by then it's often too late. I coach on relationships a lot because the truth is, lack of relationship skills is also standing in the way of our business success. Well, today I've got help. This is the 100th episode of the Profitable Mindset podcast and I wanted to do something super special to celebrate and to help you get more fulfillment in life too. So today my special guest is my youngest child, my 15 yr old daughter Shivan, and two of her friends. I wanted to get their perspective of what makes them feel connected - or disconnected - from their parents. And what they told me was absolute gold!! Tune in and learn what's helped me communicate better with my kids so that now we have the most fulfilling relationship. This means I have THE most fulfilling life I could possibly imagine!! I tell you, having a 15-year-old who feels safe telling me everything that's going on in her life, knowing she can talk to me about anything, is so precious to me. I never got to have this kind of relationship with my parents - they just didn't know how. So I value even more that I get to have this open, honest relationship of acceptance with my kids that wasn't available to me. And if you're thinking it's easy for me and my daughter to have a good relationship because we're so alike and therefore it'll be totally different for you - I can tell you, the opposite is true. I had her when I was 40 years old so there's even more than a generation gap. I can't even imagine where she got exposed to some of the ideas she presents! But she addresses this in the episode - how can she and I have such a deeply connected relationship even though she believes and does things so foreign to me sometimes. This bugs her all the time. Spools of wire left on the ground after fence-fixing, hay not raked up correctly after feeding, half-finished projects - all of this constant clutter was making her feel angry and frustrated. Living in this constant state of frustration makes her snappy with people around her. Feeling angry about it makes her unhappy throughout her days.
