Kathryn and Kristi catch up with cyclist and diversity advocate Brooke Goudy. Brooke’s love for cycling started as a child when she got her first bike as a Christmas present, and grew to a life-long passion. Brooke moved to Colorado and found a new passion in mountain biking, but she was struck by the lack of representation of people of color in the sport. This led her to seek out other women of color in the mountain biking community, and she joined the Denver branch of the national organization Black Girls Do Bike. Brooke is now the co-leader of the Black Girls Do Bike Denver, and continues her mission to help minority groups feel seen and represented in cycling.
An impressive cyclist in her own right, this past summer Brooke rode the Tour Divide. The Great Divide Trail tour route travels from Banff, Canada all the way south to the US/Mexico border and stacks up nearly 200,000 vertical feet of climbing. The route took her 64 days to complete. She talks about what she learned along the way and how that time on the trail changed her perspective of what she was capable of, both on and off the bike.
