I have a huge announcement.
I am going to train for the American Ninja Warrior.
Oh boy, I just said that! I cannot believe this is something I am actually going to pursue!
Let me tell you how this happened. For those of you who don’t know anything about me, I was a fitness competitor for 8 years, I competed in 26 shows, ran multiple half-marathons and ran the Spartan race. I have been craving the next level of fitness that I’m completely uncomfortable with.
Recently I was sitting there watching the Ninja Warrior. If you are not familiar with it, it’s an obstacle race where you need to have tons of gymnastics training, upper body strength and all different levels of conditioning.
I caught myself whispering to myself “I wish I could do that”.
And the next thing I said was: “This is not for me, I’m not that athletic, I don’t have enough upper body strength. It would take me years, so why would I even start?”
It was a weak conversation with self. I realized that what was stopping me was the fear of failure and of the hard journey I would have to suck up for a really long time. How applicable is that to all of you who might not have taken the next step to the transformation because it seems so hard and you think it’s not for you? There is so much self-doubt and negativity in that conversation with ourselves. I may have forgotten what it’s like to suck at lounges at first, or to not be able to run a mile. But I know what it’s like being held back by your own limiting beliefs.
Whether you are trying to lose 10, 20 or 30 pounds, it’s about making that initial decision and confessing to whomever that you are scared, but that you are going to move pass it and actually do that. I urge you to make a courageous move that challenges you and scares you.
I went to the Spartan training with our coach Vera this weekend, which is a combination of wall climbing, tire flipping, spears throwing and ring climbing, that took place at 9 am on a Saturday, but I was there and I was prepared, excited and a bit scared. I didn’t know what I signed up for.
Then we got into the class.
I never felt so weak in my life. Everybody in the class finished six rounds while Vera and I finished only two. We sucked. We were terrible, screaming like little school girls, avoiding the obstacles and getting frustrated. The instructor had to come to correct us and explain what to do. None of it was insanely fun, but we followed through and finished the best we could.
I caught myself thinking: “Wow you were really pretty terrible. Everybody thinks you’re stupid and weak, and you can’t do anything”.
Then I had this profound moment, when I said to myself:
“Why are you engaging in this conversation? You are here because you have a big goal, because you want to make it to the tryouts for Ninja Warrior.”
I was so relieved with the fact that I could change that conversation and that I was in control of the situation. It didn’t matter what people were thinking and how terrible I was.
We only get better by practicing. But how many of us get down at ourselves when we are not able to finish the last 15 reps or we aren’t able to run as fast? Getting down on yourself is like slashing your tires when one tire is flat. Then you are really defeated, because then you’re right – it really is too difficult and it’s not for you. We all want to be right because we want the certainty. Our body and mind likes certainty.
But in reality, it’s your journey. We always want to do what’s easy but that’s not where growth is. Growth is truly found in facing your fears, showing up for yourself and doing your best with what you’re given today.
I am going to go back to Spartan training and to the tryout for Ninja Warrior even though I’m not a gymnast at all. But it’s going to happen. I urge you really relate to this story. You might feel too comfortable where you are now. I urge you to challenge yourself this week and do something differently. Do something that is outside of your comfort zone, embrace the journey and the weakness. Change the conversation with yourself and watch your entire confidence demeanor. In the weakness and in overcoming that weakness is where we find strength and confidence to carry our journey forward.
