• Manaus

Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas. In the city itself, visitors can see the Teatro Amazonas, a 19th-century theater. About 10 kilometers outside the city is the "Meeting of Waters." Manaus can also be the starting point for a trip into the Amazon rainforest, which visitors can even do as a day trip from the city.

• Salvador

The city of Salvador, in the northeast of Brazil, was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Many people were brought here from Africa as slaves, and Salvador now has many African influences in its food,
music and religion. The old city center of Pelourinho is full of brightly colored buildings and churches.

• Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha is a group of 21 islands about 360 kilometers from Brazil's northeast coast. Only one island has people living on it, and it's just 26 square kilometers in size.

The island is home to Praia do Sancho, named one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches. It's not easy to visit, however. The only way to get there is by boat or by climbing 70 meters down ladders through holes in a cliff.

Can't find any destinations on Earth for your next holiday? Lucky for you, one Californian company wants to make it possible to take a vacation in space by building a hotel in orbit.

The Orbital Assembly Corporation hopes to start building Voyager Station, a space station that includes rooms for tourists, in 2026, and open it in 2027. It will be able to carry up to 440 people.

The station will be shaped like a massive wheel, with 24 large pods around the outside of the 200-meter-wide structure. Each pod is 24 meters long and 12 meters wide, and will be used for different things such as restaurants, bars, gyms, hotels and laboratories for research.

The company says that some pods will even be private homes that people can buy.

"Eventually, going to space will just be another option people will pick for their vacation, just like going on a cruise, or going to Disney World," said Tim Alatorre, senior design architect of the space station, speaking to Dezeen. He said that the station may even include things such as concerts and a movie theater.

A teenage boy and his father have invented a new video game console that they believe will change the way children play and learn. They call it the WOWCube: a digital Rubik's Cube for the 21st century.
Savva Osipov suggested the idea for the console in 2016, and his father Ilya Osipov designed it in spring of the following year.
The WOWCube looks similar to a Rubik's Cube. It has 6 sides, each with 4 screens that can be turned to play games and other programs.
The console does not have any buttons, and all of its programs, including games, puzzles and more, are controlled by moving the cube in different ways. Game characters and objects can run and move from one screen to another, so users don't just look at one side while they play.
At the moment, the WOWCube has about 20 games. But anyone will be able to create a game and add it to the WOWCube's Playstore, which other users can download and play.
And as well as games, the console can also stream apps from a smartphone, including weather, news or pictures from Instagram. Max Filin, co-founder of Cubios Inc., the company that produces the WOWCube, and the Osipovs have already won several science and technology prizes for the product. It is expected to cost $249 when it goes on sale, and can be reserved through the WOWCube Website.

A zoo in the Czech Republic is trying out a new way to entertain its bored chimpanzees during the country's coronavirus lockdown by giving them screen time with other chimps.
The zoo in the northern town of Dvur Kralove has put a large screen into the chimpanzee enclosure to show them a video of what the chimpanzees are doing on the other side of the country at a zoo in the city of Brno.
The zoo started the project to try and make everyday life more exciting for the chimpanzees during lockdown and give them some fun after it closed to the public on December 18.
Zookeeper Radek Hlavka said the chimpanzees miss people and can get bored. Hlavka said that of all the chimps, the youngest female called "M" seems to get the most excited about watching the chimpanzees on the screen.
The zoo plans to see if the screens have helped before deciding whether to continue using them.
However, it won't be easy making sure the chimpanzees aren't bored. "It's pretty complicated to entertain them for a long time," said Hlavka.

K-pop group BTS has been named the best-selling musical artist of 2020 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Taylor Swift was number two, and Drake was number three.
The top artist is decided using the total sales, downloads and streams of all their music around the world.
BTS is the first South Korean artist to be world number one, and also the first top artist to mostly sing in a language other than English. The group was the seventh on the list in 2019, when Taylor Swift took the top spot.
Released in February, BTS' fourth full-length album, Map of the Soul: 7, became the number one album in more than 20 countries. Then in August, BTS released "Dynamite," its first all-English song, and the group's first number one song in the US. In November came another album, Be, inspired by the members' feelings about the coronavirus pandemic.
The album included "Dynamite," as well as "Life Goes On," which gave the group another number one in the US — this time with a song that was mostly in Korean, the first time a song in that language was at the top in America.

Isreali artist Zygo is known for using the shape of a clothespin in his paintings and sculptures. Now, he wants to make a building in the shape of the everyday item.
Zygo and his team plan to build the 50-floor Clothespin Tower in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). One side of it will be a hotel with 1,200 rooms, and the other side will have 300 apartments. Plans for the tower also include a 10,000-square-meter shopping center with art galleries and restaurants.
The artist said that the Clothespin Tower will be "the biggest piece of art ever created." Instead of just looking at the art, however, Zygo wants people to be a part of it. "We give them an option to be a part of the tower — enter it, live in it, spend time inside it," he told Gulf News.
Zygo said that the idea behind the shape is how two halves can come together to make a whole. He said the tower will be "a symbol for love, peace, and hope."
He said he sees the tower as a "bridge to peace" between Israel, where he's from, and the UAE, where the building is planned to be built.
Israel and the UAE signed the Abraham Accords Peace Agreement, a deal to normalize the relationship between the two countries, in September 2020.
Zygo's team plans to start building the tower in 2023. They also want to build clothespin-shaped towers in other places, including China and locations across eastern Europe.

Doctors are now using electric bicycles designed for emergencies on the streets of Paris.
The Emergency Bike offers medical workers a quick way to travel the city's congested streets and get to people who need help.
Technology and marketing company Wunderman Thompson Paris worked with French bicycle store Ecox and bike maker Urban Arrow to create the bike, getting advice from the Paris Emergency Services.
The Emergency Bike comes with a GPS and a 150-liter box for carrying medicine. It also has a blue flashing light, so it's easy to see on the road. The vehicle has two batteries that let doctors ride up to 160 kilometers when fully charged.
Wunderman Thompson says Emergency Bikes allow medical workers to get anywhere in Paris an average of twice as fast as any other vehicle, and they are much easier to park. However, an ambulance will still be needed to take someone to a hospital.
The first Emergency Bikes arrived on the streets of Paris at the beginning of September. Wunderman Thompson hopes other cities and countries will use them in the future as well.

The UK has announced plans to ban "buy one, get one free" deals and other special offers for unhealthy food. The ban affects food and drinks with high levels of sugar, salt and fat, and will start in April 2022.
As part of the new rules, restaurants in the UK will also no longer be allowed to offer free refills of sugary drinks. The ban will also stop unhealthy food and drinks — or ads for them — from being placed in shop entrances, at the ends of aisles, or at checkouts.
These new location rules will only apply to stores that are over 185 square meters in size. Specialist stores, like chocolate shops, won't be affected, but they will still have to follow the other new rules.
British Public Health Minister Jo Churchill said that the new rules will help everyone eat healthier foods, which is an important part of improving the health of the nation.
The changes are part of the government's plan to help people in the UK lose weight. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) says 67% of British men and 60% of British women are overweight or obese. NHS data also shows 9.7% of children aged 4 to 5 are obese, as are 20.2% of children aged 10 to 11.
In July 2020, the British government also announced plans to ban ads for unhealthy food both on TV and online before 9:00 p.m. And in November 2020, it said it would ban all online advertising of unhealthy foods.

Disposable coffee cups have become a huge problem for the environment. But one Ireland-based company thinks it has a solution.
Disposable coffee cups are made of paper, but they have a plastic lining to allow them to hold liquid. This lining means they can't be recycled easily, and most are not recycled at all.
ButterflyCup has made what it says is the world's first 100% plastic-free, completely recyclable coffee cup.
The cup, which is also called ButterflyCup, uses a water-based lining to allow it to hold drinks without the use of plastic. The company says that the cup can be recycled just like normal paper, and if the cup gets into the environment as litter, it will biodegrade naturally. The top can also be folded down to cover the cup, so there's no need for a plastic lid.
The company says that the ButterflyCup has already been used in 20 countries around the world.
In the UK, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, which has nature reserves across the country, started using the cups in its visitor centers in December 2020. ButterflyCup also said that it is talking to major coffee shops about using the cup in their stores.
According to a 2017 study by the UK government, almost half of all hot drinks in the country were sold in disposable cups. The report said that by 2025, the UK could be using about 3.75 billion cups each year. At the time of the report, fewer than 1 in 400 disposable cups was being recycled.

Have you ever wanted a job where you get paid to do nothing? A Japanese man is renting himself out to do just that 一 and thousands of people are paying for his services.
Shoji Morimoto, 37, from Tokyo, has been offering himself as someone who will "eat, drink and give very simple responses, but do nothing more," since June 2018. He has received over 3,000 requests since then.
Morimoto started renting himself for free when he couldn't find a new job. He had left his job because he found it difficult to fit in, and his boss told him that it didn't matter if he was there or not.
Morimoto now charges 10,000 yen, or almost $100, for each request, and said he sees three or four clients per day. Those who rent him must also pay the cost of his meals, plus travel from Kokubunji station in western Tokyo.
His business idea was inspired by another person who did nothing but receive meals. Morimoto decided to start a Twitter account for his services, and now has over 260,000 followers. He has also published several books about his service and inspired a television show.
He told The Mainichi that he doesn't act as a friend, but can still help people feel less lonely. Customers have said that just having someone with them can provide support.
One customer said having Morimoto beside them helped them visit the hospital when they had been putting off going. Another said she had rented him to be with her when meeting men for the first time, and to listen to things she couldn't tell her friends.
