With restaurants and bars closed around the country, a German brewery found itself with 6,000 liters of its "Altbier" beer unsold and nearing its expiry date.
But it has an interesting solution. Fuechschen Brewery in Duesseldorf has started working with bakers to make loaves of "Treberbrot," or "Spent Grain Bread."
 
"It would have been such a shame to just toss out such a tasty beer," said Peter Koenig, whose family has run the brewery since 1908. He said they then thought of the idea of baking bread with beer, instead of water.
 
Twelve bakeries are now making the bread, and have also been giving customers a bottle of Altbier for free with each loaf.
 
Baker Janika Derksen, whose family runs Coelven bakery, said that people quickly found out about the bread, which her bakery sells for about $4.65 a loaf including the bottle of Altbier.
 
Derksen said that people have even been asking if she can send the bread by mail across Germany, which she can.
 
Customer Michael Maassen went to the bakery to buy a loaf for himself after hearing about it on social media. The 48-year-old soldier said that he thinks it's a great idea, and that working together and helping each other "is more important now than it ever has been."
 
Beer sales in Germany have fallen because of a lockdown that has kept restaurants and bars closed since the beginning of November.

A Banksy painting honoring Britain’s health workers has sold for a record $23.2 million. Proceeds from the sale will go to health organizations and charities across the UK, according to Christie's, the auction house that sold the painting.
The work by the mystery street artist, which is called Game Changer, first appeared on a wall at Southampton General Hospital in southern England in May, 2020. The black-and-white picture shows a young boy sitting on the floor playing with a nurse superhero toy, as Batman and Spiderman toys sit in a wastepaper basket next to him.
 
The hospital said Banksy left a note for workers with the painting saying: "Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white."
 
The auction house said it will donate a large amount of the money it made from the sale to health organizations. A copy of the picture will stay at the hospital, Christie's added.
 
Christie’s said the 23.2 million dollars sale price was a record for a Banksy piece sold at auction. The auction house thought the painting would sell for between 3.5 million dollars and 4.8 million dollars.

A "polar bear hotel" has opened in China that gives guests 24/7 views of polar bears from their rooms.
 The hotel opened on March 12 in the city of Harbin, as part of the Harbin Polarland theme park. Rooms in the hotel — which cost between $290 and $350 per night — are built around an enclosure that lets guests look at the animals through their windows.
 
"Whether you're eating, playing or sleeping, polar bears will keep you company," the hotel wrote on the WeChat app.
 
However, the hotel has been criticized for its treatment of the animals. Photos and videos show that the bears are kept in a space with bright lights and a white painted floor, with no natural rocks or ice.
 
"Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes," Jason Baker from PETA told Reuters. He said that in the wild, polar bears spend up to 18 hours a day moving around huge areas that cover thousands of miles.
 
Harbin Polarland said that the enclosure is only part of the area available to the bears, and that the animals can go outside when the weather allows.

A 52-year-old man who spent 14 hours floating in the Pacific Ocean survived thanks to a "piece of sea rubbish."
Vidam Perevertilov, from Lithuania, fell overboard on February 16 at around 4 a.m. He was working on the Silver Supporter, which was on its way from New Zealand to the Pitcairn Islands.
 
Vidam later told his son, Marat, that he wasn't feeling well, so he went outside to get some fresh air. Marat told Stuff that his father might have fainted because he does not remember falling in the water.
 
The ship continued sailing for another six hours before anyone noticed Vidam was missing. The captain then turned the ship around and sent out a call for help to other ships in the area.
 
As he tried to stay above water, Vidam saw a black dot on the horizon and started swimming towards it. The dot turned out to be a fishing buoy that was not attached to anything.
 
After about 14 hours holding onto the buoy, Vidam saw the Silver Supporter return and started shouting and waving, hoping that someone would notice him. Eventually, a passenger heard his voice and Vidam was pulled to safety.
 
"He looked about 20 years older and very tired but he was alive," Marat said.
When asked why Vidam had not taken the buoy with him as a souvenir, Marat told Stuff: "It's funny. He said he wanted to leave it there, so it could save another person's life."

After changing to solar power, a school district in Arkansas is now saving enough money to increase how much it pays its teachers.
 
On average, teachers in the Batesville School District now get between $2,000 and $3,000 more a year than they used to, with some getting up to $15,000 more.
 
The Batesville School District used to spend more than $600,000 on utility bills every year, while the district's teachers were being paid an average of $45,000 a year. It was difficult to keep teachers at Batesville schools or hire new ones, with many teachers choosing to work second jobs just to make ends meet.
 
So in 2017, the Batesville School District put hundreds of solar panels in a field it owned. It also put some in front of its high school, for a total of nearly 1,500 panels making electricity for its seven schools.
 
The school district also found other ways to reduce its bills. For example, schools got LED lights, new windows and better insulation, all of which save energy. The district even sells some of the energy it makes, according to CBS.
 
The changes are helping the school district save more than $300,000 a year, reports ChavoBart Digital Media. Batesville’s superintendent, Michael Hester, says that with the higher pay, more teachers now want to work there and fewer are leaving.

Following a trade dispute with China, people across Taiwan are finding new ways to include pineapples in traditional dishes in an attempt to support the country's farmers.
China banned the import of Taiwanese pineapples on March 1, saying it was concerned about pests. So Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen asked citizens on social media to "Eat Taiwan's pineapples until you burst," to help the island's farmers.
 
Chefs like Hung Ching Lung, who owns a restaurant in Taipei, quickly made new dishes with the fruit. Hung said he and his team spent three days testing ways to add pineapple to the restaurant's beef noodle soup recipe.

"The first time we tested it when we cooked it in the soup, it was very sweet," he said. After 10 tries, he and his team got it right, Hung said.
 
Restaurants across the island have done the same, creating dishes like pineapple shrimp balls and fried rice with pineapple.
 
China says the ban was not politically motivated, with Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office saying that safety was the reason for the decision. However, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called the move unfair.

Throwing food scraps in the trash is a daily activity for many, but what if those scraps could be made into a meal? IKEA Canada has released a cookbook to help people do exactly that.
The book, called The ScrapsBook, has 50 recipes using food people usually throw in the trash such as stale bread, brown bananas, the tops of strawberries and even sour milk.
"In Canada, research tells us that almost two thirds of food scraps that end up as kitchen waste could have been eaten," said Johanna Andren, Head of Marketing at IKEA Canada. She said that the company wants to show people ways they can reduce this waste.
IKEA worked with 10 North American chefs who wrote five recipes each for the book, which is available online for free.
Recipes include meals for breakfast, main meals, snacks and desserts. For example, one recipe is a vegetable burger made from things like old beans, apple skins and carrot ends. Another is a chocolate and banana cake that's made using banana skins.

Kane Tanaka, the world's oldest living person, will carry the Olympic torch for the Tokyo Games in May, 2021.
Tanaka, who celebrated her 118th birthday in January this year, will become the oldest person ever to carry the Olympic torch. She will take the torch as it passes through the town of Shime, in the prefecture of Fukuoka, where she has lived her entire life.
She even has a new pair of sneakers for the event — a birthday present from her family. Her relatives will push her in a wheelchair for most of the 100 meters, but she plans on walking the last few steps before handing the torch to the next bearer.
Tanaka was born January 2, 1903. She married a rice shop owner, Hideo Tanaka, when she was 19 years old, with whom she had four children. Tanaka worked in the family shop until she was 103. She now spends her time doing math puzzles and playing the board game Othello.
"It's great she reached that age and she can still keep up an active lifestyle," her grandson Eiji Tanaka, who's in his 60s, told CNN. "We want other people to see that and feel inspired, and not to think age is a barrier."
However, Tanaka has a few years to go before she is the oldest person ever. That record is held by Jeanne Louise Calment, a Frenchwoman who was 122 years old when she died in 1997.

The Blue Estate Group is planning to build the world's first floating city in the Caribbean.
Just a short trip away from Miami and the Bahamas, the Blue Estate will offer its residents more than 340 sunny days per year.
The man-made island will be 1,500 meters long and 1,000 meters wide, and will have space for more than 15,000 people to live. It will also have a school, a hospital, parks, markets, business and shopping areas, as well as two hotels for visitors.
Although it will float on the Caribbean Sea, the Blue Estate Group promises that the island will be very stable. It will be built with concrete, and have 50-meter-high walls to stop even the biggest ocean waves. Hurricane shutters will protect residents from strong winds, and the whole island can even be moved to a safer area if needed.
Construction on the island won't start until 2022, and is expected to be completed in 2025. However, properties are already on sale, with prices starting at $19,800 for 20-square-meter apartments, and going above $1.1 billion for one of two "mega mansions."

Some of the UK's iconic red phone boxes are up for sale, giving communities a chance to turn them into something new.
BT, the company that owns the phone boxes, has been running its Adopt a Kiosk program since 2008. Phone boxes that are no longer in use are sold for about $1 to town councils or charities, which can turn them into anything they want, including coffee shops, information centers or libraries.
BT has already sold more than 6,600 phone boxes through the program, and it has 4,000 more for sale.
Red phone boxes started being used in the UK in 1926, with almost all of them in London at first. According to the BBC, there were 92,000 phone boxes across the UK by 1992 before mobile phones became popular.
"With most people now using mobile phones, it's led to a huge drop in the number of calls made from pay phones," said James Browne of BT. He said that the Adopt a Kiosk program allows communities to keep their local phone boxes, but turn them into something new.
In the village of Minety, a phone box was turned into a store selling flowers and vegetables grown by young children to raise money for their school.
