In this episode, I speak with Eileen Rivera Ley, who owns Blind Savvy USA, LLC. We talk about how she became an advocate for the low-vision community starting at James Hopkins University, then onto advocacy for diabetes, and then onto Low Vision Logic. In 2020, she founded ACE Academy Online which helped those who were blind or visually impaired to be able to have good soft skills, such as networking, to succeed in being the best version of themselves both at home but also in the workplace. WE conclude our discussion with how she partnered with David DeNotaris of Sky’s the Limit Communications to provide workshops similar to this for many US states.

Ah le Crazy Horse... Mythique et sensuel cocon qui sublime une certaine image de la femme. Celle, sexy et calibrée, d’une rangée de danseuses perruquées au carré, chorégraphiée au millimètre, et dont les corps et la rigueur de vie doivent répondre à une exigence de chaque instant et à une conception toute particulière de la notion de beauté féminine. Mais derrière ces artistes de la nuit, vous vous doutez bien qu’il y a la vraie vie et chacune de ces danseuses porte sa propre trajectoire intime de femme... et, dans de très rares cas, de mère. 
 
Banny fait partie de cette exigeante troupe et elle est une de ces sublimes créatures de la nuit. Mais à la différence de ses petites camarades, lorsque Banny redevient Fanny, elle troque sa paire de Louboutin et sa perruque rose pour aller... pouponner un bébé. 
 
Elle, qui se destinait à une carrière de prof de danse et qui n’avait jamais mis les pieds dans un cabaret, se retrouve toute jeune, un peu par hasard, projetée dans cette institution mythique sans se rendre vraiment compte de ce que cela implique. Mais dans ce monde où les grossesses sont si rares qu’elles en deviennent un peu des légendes de loges, Fanny fait face à son désir de maternité grandissant et irrépressible. Elle a bien conscience qu’une grossesse ne ferait pas vraiment bon ménage avec la vie de “crazy girl”, mais Fanny s’écoute. Elle abandonne son rêve pour mener à bien sa grossesse et embrasser son autre rêve : fonder une famille. 
 
Sauf que nos rêves ne disparaissent jamais vraiment et, très vite, entre deux biberons, elle sent qu’elle a envie d’y retourner : l’appel de la scène est lui aussi plus fort que tout et le Crazy lui manque. 
 
Alors oui, il faut parfois partir pour mieux revenir... mais comment revient-on prendre sa place sur scène lorsque l’entrée des artistes se verrouille subitement de l’intérieur ? 
 
Dans cet épisode, Fanny vous raconte comment elle est passée d’un statut de jeune femme, dilettante et insécure, se laissant porter par la vie, à celui de mère, sûre d'elle et maîtresse de ses choix, et comment elle a su faire son grand retour sur scène après avoir porté la vie. Imaginez... une nuit d’hiver noire et froide... Il est minuit, le monde est confiné, les gens sont chez eux bien au chaud, et les routes sont désertes. Pourtant, ce soir-là, sur l’autoroute, une voiture surgit dans le noir. Elle file, seule, à une vitesse folle. Dans cette voiture, le conducteur est concentré, il regarde son compteur : 180km/h. Mais il n’y a pas de temps à perdre, il doit rouler vite, très vite, pour atteindre sa destination le plus rapidement possible. À côté de lui, une femme rugit... SA femme. Elle est à genoux, sur le siège passager et hurle à la lune un cri des entrailles de femme-animale qui s’ouvre un peu plus à chaque contraction. Il est minuit, elle est en plein travail. Leur bébé arrive...
 
Cette scène pourrait sortir tout droit d’un blockbuster américain (avec plein de voitures qui roulent très vite dedans), mais pourtant elle s’est passée bien loin d’Hollywood : c’est l’histoire incroyable de Virginie. Virginie qui, après son premier accouchement douloureux et un peu traumatisant, l’avait pourtant dit et redit : pour le deuxième, on lui poserait une péridurale dès lors que son pied toucherait le sol de la maternité. Hors de question de subir une fois de plus ces douleurs de contractions insoutenables... Elle ne s’en sentait pas capable. Oui mais maintenant on le sait bien, quand ça concerne la maternité, les femmes sont capables de tout.
 
Dans cet épisode, Virginie va donc vous embarquer avec elle dans une course contre la montre qu’elle et son mari ont entreprise pour tenter d’atteindre l’hôpital où devait naître leur deuxième bébé. Mais au-delà de cet accouchement hors normes et spectaculaire, vous comprendrez encore un peu plus, l'impact que peut avoir un accouchement sur la suite d’une maternité, et vous découvrirez comment cette folle naissance a transformé Virginie au plus profond d’elle-même, dans sa nature de femme et de mère, la rendant plus puissante que jamais.

Je ne sais pas si vous croyez aux miracles, mais en ce qui concerne la maternité et le champ des possibles qu’elle peut nous réserver, j’ai tendance à être la première à vouloir y croire... 
 
Margaux est de celles qui s’accrochent aux signes, qui tentent de faire de chaque moment un beau souvenir et qui cherchent un peu de magie dans chaque recoin de la vie. Et c’est peut-être sa capacité à voir le soleil au-delà des nuages qui l’a portée pendant ses six longues années, durant lesquelles elle a tenté coûte que coûte de fabriquer un bébé. Embarquée du jour au lendemain dans une PMA, elle se perd dans des chiffres étourdissants qui auraient pu devenir décourageants : 6 transferts, 9 embryons, 2 Matrice Lab et 3 fausses couches, autant d'espoirs et de désespoirs qui ont longtemps fait saigner son cœur. 
 
Alors, comment fait-on, malgré une capacité folle à se relever, pour garder l'envie de repartir de plus belle lorsque le chemin vers la maternité se transforme peu à peu en véritable chemin de croix ? Quel est le secret pour garder l’amour et l’espoir au sein de son couple alors que chaque épreuve pourrait creuser un fossé de plus en plus infranchissable ? Et surtout, par quel miracle, la vie vient finalement se nicher dans un ventre meurtri... pour une grossesse gémellaire des plus extraordinaires ? 
 
Dans cet épisode, Margaux va vous raconter comment un mirage peut se transformer en miracle, et comment, après des années d’infertilité, deux bébés sont arrivés dans son ventre par deux portes d’entrée différentes. Je vous laisse donc l’écouter et probablement tomber de votre chaise quand vous comprendrez qu’au même moment, à côté d'un embryon issu d'une énième insémination, peut également venir se nicher naturellement une autre vie... Oui, je sais c’est fou, c’est bliss, c’est trop beau, c’est cadeau.

Et voici la 2e partie tant attendue de cet épisode si particulier... Isolées, rabaissées, effrayées, honteuses, désarmées... C’est souvent l’état dans lequel la perversion toxique d’un conjoint peut plonger les plus solaires d’entre nous. Et c’est exactement dans cet état que nous avons laissé Alice dans la première partie de cet épisode : seule au monde, face à un époux tyrannique et violent, avec 6 enfants à protéger. 
 
Mais, un jour, la lumière filtre à travers les meurtrières du château fort, car Alice parvient, après avoir sécurisé ses enfants endormis, à s’échapper 1h par semaine de son lourd foyer, pour un nouvel environnement... libérateur. Éloignée de toute vie sociale depuis 10 ans, Alice découvre alors qu’on peut lui porter de l’intérêt, mais surtout elle découvre... des yeux qui séduisent, des papillons dans le ventre, et des baisers qui la font chavirer. 
 
Alors ça fait quoi, à 32 ans de découvrir le sentiment amoureux ? Où puise-t-on la force de s’imposer face à son dictateur ? Quel est l’électrochoc qui peut absolument tout faire basculer alors que les pensées les plus sombres nous assaillent...? COMMENT ON SE RELÈVE ? 
 
Dans la deuxième partie de son témoignage, vous entendrez Alice raconter les remparts à franchir, les décisions à prendre, les jugements des proches, les phrases assassines, les peurs qui immobilisent et la violence qui tétanise... mais également l’aide - inattendue - d’un prêtre, d’une psy, d’une avocate, et la solidarité qui s’est mise en place pour assurer la survie d’une mère qui a à présent... 7 enfants. Car si Alice tombe enceinte comme elle respire, c’est bien parce que ses enfants sont son oxygène, et c’est pour eux qu’elle se battra pour retrouver une liberté dont aucune femme ne devrait jamais être privée.

Il y a des rencontres que la vie n’aurait peut-être pas dû mettre sur notre chemin. Des alliances que l'on sait vouées à l'échec, mais dans lesquelles on fonce, sans contrôler grand-chose, comme aspirées par la certitude de l’autre. Il y a des histoires dont on voudrait s’échapper mais dont les liens sont trop difficiles à délier. Souvent l’explication tient en un mot : emprise. C'est un mot qui raconte la domination physique, morale, intellectuelle, ou relationnelle... 
 
L'emprise dont Alice a été victime pendant 15 ans coche toutes les cases : totalitaire, tétanisante et isolante, elle anesthésie insidieusement tout son libre arbitre dès le jour où, à 16 ans, elle fait la rencontre glaçante d’un homme aussi mystérieux que fascinant. Il l’impressionne, la nourrit de livres, revoit sa culture philosophique et théologique, et prend de plus en plus de place dans sa vie, l’entraînant dans une relation d’abord platonique, mais déjà sombre, et faisant s’évaporer toute son innocence et ses ambitions. 
 
Mais par quel sortilège, une jeune-femme que rien ne prédestinait à une telle soumission en arrive-t-elle à se laisser hypnotiser par un homme qui prend le contrôle total de sa vie ? Comment survit-on ensuite dans la froideur d’un foyer dirigé par des principes sectaires et oppressifs ? Comment peut-on, malgré la violence psychologique, réussir à embrasser son rôle de mère ? Et où trouver le courage de se lever chaque matin la boule au ventre, quand dans son ventre on abrite la vie... 6 fois de suite ? 
 
L’histoire d’Alice est de celles qui vous retournent les tripes de colère, parce que ça aurait pu être la nôtre. Comprendre l’envergure de la toile qui s’est tissée autour d’elle demande un certain temps d’écoute et le récit de beaucoup de détails... qui n’en sont pas. Alors dans la première partie de cet épisode, Alice va vous raconter la genèse... avant la bascule. Vous comprendrez comment l'ombre de ce prétendant moyenâgeux a peu-à-peu éteint sa lumière, et comment il a jeté sur elle un dévolu non-négociable, la projetant sans qu’elle ne puisse rien y faire, dans une vie de mère de famille dévouée soumise à un joug religieux terrifiant. 
 
Aujourd'hui, et au lendemain de la journée internationale de lutte contre les violences faites aux femmes, vous entendrez le premier volet de ce bouleversant parcours de mère, avant de plonger la semaine prochaine, encore plus profond dans l’emprise, pour découvrir comment Alice a décidé de la combattre pour elle et pour ses enfants, et comment elle a finalement réussi, après des années de silence, à s’en libérer.

It’s another election year, and we’re talking with Gina Roberts of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission about the Civics Classroom Curriculum, a free and available resource to all Arizona teachers.  3Ps host Donnie Dicus welcomes Gina Roberts, the voter education director of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission, to the podcast. The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission is the state’s non-partisan voter education agency. The commission helps people learn about the logistics of voting and the candidates and the roles they’re running for. It also advocates for participation in the political process. The curriculum includes lesson plans designed for grades 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12 with a variety of hands-on activities that can work in both an in-person or virtual setting. The curriculum is also aligned with Arizona State Standards. Gina speaks to how the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission is a voter-created state government agency that is mandated by state statute to provide non-partisan, non-influencing voter education. The curriculum reviews the election processes, the roles and responsibilities of different elected offices, and media and information literacy skills. She also shares about ways students can become more civically involved aside from voting in elections. Gina also announces that the commission will soon be releasing a comic book to supplement their Civics Classroom Curriculum. Talking Civic Engagement in the Classroom with Gina Roberts

Rachel Martinez is in her first year of teaching third-grade in Tolleson Elementary School District. In this episode, 3Ps in a Pod host Kathleen Paulsen talks with Rachel about the support she’s received at her school and the learning she did at the recent Welcome to Teaching event with Dr. Doug Fisher.   She shares how struck she was by the six levels of engagement that Dr. Fisher shared and how he showed how even very young students can be aware of their engagement level and know what they need to do to be more ready to learn. She and Kathleen also reflect on the four types of learning: focused instruction, collaboration, guided learning, and independent learning.   Rachel shares about the support she’s received in her school and district, including working with a mentor. Rachel’s mentor is Michelle Doherty, who Rachel also had as a professor at Northern Arizona University. Rachel talks about how Michelle supports her and builds her confidence as she goes through her first year of teaching.    As Rachel nears the end of her first school year, she says she’s excited to reflect and see the growth that both she and her students made during the year. She notes how important it is for her to reflect on her work and growth for herself but also to model the expectation and power of that for her students.   The Arizona K12 Center is also having Dr. Fisher back for another event based on his book Welcome to Teaching this fall! Reflecting on the First Year of Teaching with Rachel Martinez

In the final episode of this podcast series on AI in Education, Dr. Chad Gestson and Dr. LeeAnn Lindsey chat with Lauren Owens and Lindsey McCaleb about where teachers can go from here — where to begin, where they can find guidance, resources, and additional professional development for using AI with confidence. Dr. Gestson and Dr. Lindsey are both a part of the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy, a part of Northern Arizona University, while Lauren Owens is the director of information technology for Agua Fria HS District and Lindsey McCaleb is the principal of an online school in the Balsz School District. Lauren and Lindsey share how they have started to work with AI in their schools and districts and the discussions they’ve had with school leaders and teachers to move toward using AI. They reflect on the process of planning, implementing, and assessing when integrating any new technology or change initiative.  Today’s episode also focuses on how policy creation, at the state or district level, can be much slower than how quickly technology is developing. Dr. Lindsey shares how only nine U.S. states have developed some guidelines for AI use in schools. The Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy has been working to add Arizona to that list of states and will soon be releasing an AI guidance document to help inform state, district, and school policies. That guidance document will be available on May 13 at nau.edu/aiee/azai with a corresponding webinar, "GenAI Guidance for Arizona K-12 Schools," on May 15 from 3 to 4 p.m. To sign up to receive the webinar link, click here. AI in Education, Part 4: Ready, Set, Go

Ready to see how AI can improve your work and impact student learning? In this third part of our series on AI in Education, we’ll dive into some AI tools you might consider trying in your teaching. In our last two episodes, we explored a bit of history of artificial intelligence and contemplated if using AI is cheating. Today, we look at what we can actually do with AI. Guest host Dr. Chad Gestson focuses on the heart of teaching and learning. He and Dr. LeeAnn Lindsey chat with Dr. Michele Wilson and Alec McDaniel about best practices for using AI to impact student learning. Dr. Wilson spent 38 years working within education systems and is now an education consultant. Alec is an educational technology specialist in Florence Unified School District. They both share about what makes them excited about AI and talk about what “good use” of AI in the classroom looks like before they explore several of the tools they encourage educators to check out and consider how they might support their work. In this second part of our four-part series on AI in Education, guest host Dr. Chad Gestson asks the question that is on many educators’ minds: “Is AI cheating?” He and Dr. LeeAnn Lindsey talk to Dr. Punya Mishra about academic and professional integrity, and why AI should be a catalyst to rethink “plagiarism” and “cheating."   Dr. Gestson and Dr. Lindsey are both a part of the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy, a part of Northern Arizona University, while Dr. Mishra is associate dean of scholarship and innovation and professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University.    Dr. Mishra broadens the conversation to talk about what cheating is in general and how we approach assessment. The discussion about AI and cheating is an opportunity to talk deeply about how we evaluate learning, he shares. That connects to a larger conversation about the purpose of the preK-12 education system, he explains.   The three also talk about the role of agency and autonomy in learning. That little phrase always puts me in panic mode. Why? Because I didn't have a system... at least, not one in which I identified as sound.



I've always been honest about this failing of mine. I like to create not clean!



This use to worry me and make me feel like a fraud. Real art teachers know what to do! They have their classroom procedures used control.



What I know now that I didn't know then...



But lucky for you, I have a few strategies that will help YOU identify the best clean-up routine for your art room.



There are three phases of clean up:



1. Getting Attention: How do you transition from actively working on projects to stopping? Do you ring a bell? Play a clean up song? Yell? Dim the lights?



2. Cleaning Up: What do you want the kids to do? Why? What will help you the most?



3. Exiting: Do you need time to offer rewards or calculate class points after the clean up? Exit games? Or do you just need them to get out.



All three parts are unique to you. YOU get to decide how each phase looks for your classroom. The kids will respond to whatever YOU decide.



The real trick is to do it consistently.







I've found that there are 4 different styles of teaching art.



Figuring out which style fits your personality can help you decide on a way to get your students' attention, and that style will flow into the rest of your clean up routine. It’s all about knowing what is best for YOU and sticking to it.



The Manager:



This is the art teacher who manages every minute of an art session: entering, transitioning, demonstration, creating, etc.



They often use repetition as their classroom management tool—few bells and whistles.



This is the teacher who thrives on managing expectations by never deviating from the plan.



Clean up for the Manager often looks controlled, orderly and efficient. In fact, a good allotment of time is spent on transitions.



The Manager does this systematically, so notes or complex charts are often not needed.



The  Minimalist:



This is the art teacher who likes to keep things very simple: as few steps as possible.



1. Art on Rack



2. Brushes & Paint on Sink Counter



3. Tools in Tray



4. Recycle paper



The Minimalist gives the students simple tasks and oversees the execution.







The Counter:



This is the teacher who incorporates countdowns into every facet of the art sessions.



Counting how many paper scraps children pick up or counting down to get kids to pay attention.



There may be overlaps between the Manager and the Counter personalities, however the counter uses numerically based tactics.



The Performer:



This is the teacher who relies on fun antics and high engagement to get their kids excited about clean-up.



There may be a song, dance moves, hand drawn clean-up posters, and/or props to get the party started.



There’s often a reward system to motivate the students.



This takes a lot of brain power and work if you aren’t naturally gifted in this area.

Which statement rings true for you: summer is too short OR summer is long enough?



If you're like most of us, you probably feel as though it is way too short.



By the time you’re back in the classroom in August or September it can feel as those past two months was just enough time to catch your breath, but not enough to fully recharged and get aligned.



So how do you make the most out of your time? 



Do you tackle all the stuff on your to-do list early on so you can relax later? Do you completely veg and catch up on Netflix?



Our summer plans feel differently for all of us, because we are all unique in how we restore ourselves. 



If you’re coming off a chaotic teaching season into a chaotic summer, an introverted teacher can feel completely overwhelmed. 



If you have nothing on your plate and your days are unstructured, an extrovert may feel completely unfulfilled. 



It’s also possible for both personality extremes to overestimate what you can accomplish in this relatively small parcel of time. 



Introverted and extroverted personality types may require radically different summer agendas, so keeping in mind both personalities...

The Coronavirus is certainly shaking things up. It's early on in the cycle of school closures, social distancing and home-based learning and people are just plain confused.



Folks deal with these types of events differently. There is a tremendous amount of pressure to stay put, not travel, hoard toilet paper and stock up on Chardonnay. So I thought it might be helpful to offer you a permission slip to slow down, calm down and take this pandemic day by day.
