There are as many different professional paths as there are people in the world, but that doesn’t mean all journeys are universally celebrated for their uniqueness. Something as simple as pursuing a nontraditional course of study or taking a few years off between college and a first professional role can send recruiters and hiring managers for a loop – blocking a mutually beneficial opportunity for everyone.
Richard Donaldson is the Vice President of Platform Management and Marketing at Requis, a company focused on driving the digital transformation of global enterprise supply chains. His career path has been anything but typical, with stints at multiple startups and time spent building out a brand new function at ebay.
In this interview, Richard joins host Scott Luton to discuss:
- How an abundance mindset plus some time spent working on data center infrastructure led him to begin an unlikely career in supply chain
- Why the supply chain can’t be managed holistically unless assets and data are free to flow from point to point in supporting systems
- Why waste reduction and the circular economy need to be managed as enterprise-wide initiatives if they are going to be successful in the long run

Although manufacturing has come a long way on the diversity front, women still represent a minority of the leaders and entrepreneurs in the industry. It is therefore all the more important for organizations like ‘Women in Manufacturing’ to hold educational and networking events so that women can connect with others in the field to lear from their experiences and career journeys.
Stacey Schroeder is the President and Founder of EVelop, and Coral Huffmaster is a Value Improvement Project Engineer at Polaris Industries. Both are heavily involved in the Women in Manufacturing organization regionally and at the national level as well. They joined Scott Luton and special guest host Allison Giddens, President of Win-Tech, for this episode to share their key takeaways from the 2021 Women in Manufacturing summit.
Of particular importance are Stacey and Coral’s observations and comments about:
- Why it is critical for all innovators to have someone who will challenge their ideas, tell them the truth, and force them to think outside the box
- Approaches to attracting bright, aspiring young women to consider starting careers in manufacturing and engineering
- How they think manufacturing can be changed for the better, creating opportunities and success for all individuals and companies

The Supply Chain Buzz is Supply Chain Now’s regular Monday livestream, held at 12n ET each week. This show focuses on some of the leading stories from global supply chain and global business, always with special guests – the most important of which is the live audience!
In this episode of The Buzz, made possible in partnership with the team at Azul Arc, Supply Chain Now hosts Scott Luton and Greg White find the strength to rise above the temptation to discuss sandwiches for the entire hour (inspired by this week’s episode of This Week in Business History – 5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Sandwich Industry).
Greg and Scott start the week by discussing a number of breaking news stories that supply chain professionals won’t want to miss:
• The key takeaways from the Q3 U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index, including serious driver and equipment shortages as well as fuel price increases
• Why Saks 5th Avenue is partnering with GXO Logistics to create a direct-to-consumer fulfillment hub ahead of the dramatic increase in demand expected in luxury goods this holiday season
• What it means for the rest of the world’s economies and private businesses that China’s economy has now contracted for the second consecutive month

You've heard of automation "stealing" jobs - but what if it actually has the potential to attract and retain more workers? Everywhere you look across the supply chain, people are missing - but the impact is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in customer service, where some companies have lost up to 50% of reps. And in the absence of workers, those same companies are feeling the gaps in their digital transformation efforts. Could emerging automation and artificial intelligence-based technologies pick up the mundane tasks around the building - making way for employees to focus on more impactful work? In this episode, co-hosts Kevin L. Jackson and Scott Luton discuss that possibility with Dan Reeve, sales director at Esker. Tune in as they trace the recent breakdown in customer service levels - and the promise of technology to enhance both bottom lines and more meaningful professional lives - all in one fell swoop.

U.S. Bank processed $29.7 billion in freight payment transactions in 2020. Those payments and the data that accompanies them are analyzed quarterly by Bobby Holland VP/Director of Freight Data Solutions at U.S. Bank and his team. The FPI report includes quarter over quarter, year over year, and full-year data and analysis.
According to a summary released by U.S. Bank, “The U.S. Bank National Shipments Index showed growth, but at a slightly slower pace in the third quarter, compared to the preceding quarter, and year-over-year, reflecting several headwinds. This included an increase in the COVID-19 Delta variant, general supply chain constraints, and auto plant slowdowns/shutdowns due to supply chain and microchip shortage issues.”
In this interview, Bobby is joined by Patricia Gabriel, Vice President of U.S. Customer Service with Mondelez international, to share the results of the Q3 2021 report with Supply Chain Now Co-hosts Greg White and Scott Luton, interpreting what they may mean for the economy and the shipping industry in the short and longer-term.
• The sources of the ‘index headwinds’ that Bobby and his team saw evidenced in this quarter’s report
• How a lack of return freight from the Northeast region of the country is making it harder for shippers to get drivers to head in that direction in the first place
• Localized issues beyond the regional level, such as weather events and city-specific traffic congestion, that are having a widespread impact on rates
