  • Animal Councils
In today’s episode, we’re thinking about animals. Stories about animals working together are at the heart of so many of the world’s tales, we thought we’d spend an hour bringing you a few. First, you’ll hear an Italian folk tale called “Mezzi Gallo,” about a rooster and his ragged band of cast-off animal companions who face off against a mean ol’ wolf. You’ll hear a bit of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book — that portion of the book in which the wolf council wrestles with the decision of whether the baby Mowgli will be allowed to stay with them. You’ll hear a story called “Run!” from Lyn Ford — a story she’ll introduce as a favorite animal story of hers. It draws on a lot of different storytelling traditions and characters, and Lyn Ford brings it to life in her inimitable playful style. You’ll even hear a conversation with Steven Kapp Perry (long-time musician and music lover, and host of In Good Faith on BYU Radio) about a favorite song, and an entry in the Radio Family Journal about Sam’s brother, who gets a gig feeding a barn cat while the cat’s human is away on vacation.

  • Tournament of Champions
The desire to compete seems embedded in humanity, which is perhaps why our folklore cannon is filled to the brim with contests, games, and tournaments. Is it physical prowess? Or is it wisdom? Cunning? Integrity? Join us in listening to Motoko, Heather Forest, Cathryn Fairlee, and Laura Bobrow as they bring us tales of boundless strength in all its forms.

  • Traits of Traveling
Traveling is sometimes seen as something that only people with extra time and money are able to do but this isn’t completely true. Traveling can come in all sorts of ways whether that means traveling on a study abroad, traveling across countries or simply driving to a nearby lake, each one can bring about rare adventures. This can mean meeting someone new to connect with while wandering a foreign city, gathering a new skill, or simply learning an important lesson, traveling can act as a catalyst for some of the most interesting stories of our lives. We can use these stories and share them with those around us to help educate and entertain one another because “the journey of a thousand miles begins under your feet.”

On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
