The Apple Seed episodes

  • Wading in the Jordan
Today we explore a selection of stories that all talk about the relationships adults have with children. We start with a story from our host, Sam Payne, about a bookshelf his father made for their family, followed by a discussion with Gene Nelson about a food that’s been passed down through generations. Today’s featured story is an abridgement of a long-form story by Elizabeth Ellis entitled Wading in the Jordan. The story is the surprisingly funny account of the journey Ms. Ellis’ mother, and consequently her whole family, took on the way to the next life. Following this we get to hear a story by Willy Claflin entitled “Who Has Seen the Mind,” and a story by Geraldine Buckley called “Devils on Horseback.”
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
Radio Family Journal: Building the Bookshelf
Daily Mix: “Gene Nelson” discusses “Fry Bread”
Story Spotlight: “Wading in the Jordan”, by Elizabeth Ellis
Storytime: “Who Has Seen the Mind”, by Willy Clafflin
“Devils on Horseback” by Geraldine Buckley

  • BITES **** -- "My Pet Dragon" by Sophie Snell with guest Gene Nelson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

Did you ever have an imaginary friend? On today's BITE, Sophie Snell tells the story, "My Pet Dragon" about the mischievous and fun imaginary pet dragon. Sam is joined in the studio by Gene Nelson.

  • Objects of Power
Magical items are a staple in folk lore: geese that lay golden eggs, mills that produce endless food, and carpets that fly. Perhaps you might think these tales are unrelatable because of these reality-bending objects of power, but that’s not necessarily true. Magical realism has always been a powerful tool of the storyteller: through metaphors and allegories, these items often tell stories beyond their abilities. And if you still don’t believe us, then this is the episode for you. Join us as we hear from Jenni Cargill-Strong, Kevin Cordi, and Jordon Hill about magical items that are more than just a means to an end.
