  • Traits of Traveling
Traveling is sometimes seen as something that only people with extra time and money are able to do but this isn’t completely true. Traveling can come in all sorts of ways whether that means traveling on a study abroad, traveling across countries or simply driving to a nearby lake, each one can bring about rare adventures. This can mean meeting someone new to connect with while wandering a foreign city, gathering a new skill, or simply learning an important lesson, traveling can act as a catalyst for some of the most interesting stories of our lives. We can use these stories and share them with those around us to help educate and entertain one another because “the journey of a thousand miles begins under your feet.”
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Sketchbook
Daily Mix: “Jeff Simpson” discusses “Lars and the Real Girl”

  • BITES **** -- "Coyote and the Rattlesnake" by Bill Gordh with guest Jeff Simpson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

Have you ever underestimated someone? On today's BITE, Bill Gordh shares the story "Coyote and the Rattlesnake" where a Coyote finds a sleeping rattlesnake whom he finds hilarious. Sam is joined in the studio by Jeff Simpson.

  • Ceiling Blues
Can you think of any place that brings more memories of family, warmth, and love than your home? Homes are where we learn new things, find ourselves, and eventually discover how to spread our wings and fly away to make our own homes. Clean or crazy, big or small, the lovely places we lay our heads at night are often the backdrop to some of the most funny, sad, or sweet stories we’ll ever experience. To tell us about the beautiful and sometimes messy places that homes can be are Lynn Ruehlmann, Odds Bodkin, and Dolores Hydock. To get your nostalgia flowing, we’ll first listen to an entry in the radio family journal and a conversation with a friend.

On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Oreo Cookies
Daily Mix: Colton Soelberg discusses “The Family Meal”
Story Spotlight: “Ceiling Blues” by Lynn Ruehlmann on Mischief! Adventures of a Daydreamy Child (11:41)
Storytime: “The Elf of Springtime” by Odds Bodkin on With A Twinkle In Your Eye (17:15)

  • Wading in the Jordan
Today we explore a selection of stories that all talk about the relationships adults have with children. We start with a story from our host, Sam Payne, about a bookshelf his father made for their family, followed by a discussion with Gene Nelson about a food that’s been passed down through generations. Today’s featured story is an abridgement of a long-form story by Elizabeth Ellis entitled Wading in the Jordan. The story is the surprisingly funny account of the journey Ms. Ellis’ mother, and consequently her whole family, took on the way to the next life. Following this we get to hear a story by Willy Claflin entitled “Who Has Seen the Mind,” and a story by Geraldine Buckley called “Devils on Horseback.”
