The Apple Seed

On today's episode, we'll bring you stories and conversation with Diane Edgecomb, who has dedicated herself for some time to gathering stories from Kurdistan. We'll hear some of those stories, and chat with Diane too!

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

On today's BITE, a sweet story by Donna Ingham called "Sweet Sue." Joining Sam in the studio to talk about is is assistant producer Sadie Anderson, and her mother too!

On today's BITE, Sam and assistane producer Daniel Mesta listen to Brian Fox Ellis' telling of Finn McCool (or Fionn mac Cumhaill if you're particular) and the Salmon of Knowledge.

On today's BITE, enjoy a story from Anne Rutherford, called "The Habit of Joy," about the unfolding of a mysterious phone relationship between a looking-for-herself protagonist and an unlikely lifecoach. Chatting in-studio with Sam about the story will be great storyteller Andy Offutt Irwin, a longtime friend of The Apple Seed, whose work is often featured on the show.

Are you a troublemaker? Do you tend to look ogres in the face and laugh at them? Do you tend to swing baseball bats just a little too close to your brother’s head? Do you tease those who are paranoid? Do you use unethical marketing strategies to sell potholders? Then you’ll love today’s episode because all the stories include the elements above!

In this hour, enjoy a conversation with a group of actors specializing in improvising stories for young audiences. You'll also hear an improvised story by Ed Stivender, who makes a practice of making stories up, on the spot, based on audience suggestions. This hour, we're making it up as we go along!
