The Apple Seed

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

On today's BITE, we'll listen to an animal tale by Laura Simms, a story from Zimbabwe called "Rabbit and Lion." We'll talk about the story with Morgen Raynolds, a storyteller from Montana who goes professionally by "Miss Mo." Morgen remembers hearing Laura Simms tell stories at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and realizing that she, Morgen, could be a storyteller too. It set Morgen on a path that she's still on, telling stories near and far, on all kinds of stages, for all kinds of people. You'll enjoy today's BITE!

This episode is mix of stories, each different from the other. We’ll start out by going on a safari with Shelia Arnold. Then, we’ll go on a hunting trip with Sarah Malone. Odds Bodkins will tell us riddles that a seven-year-old girl with solve, and we’ll finish with an aesop fable-like story from David Holt. You can expect great morals, funny noises, and fantastic accompaniments in these stories

Sometimes, the people who make the biggest influences in our lives are unknown, uncredited, or unexpected. We remember their face and what they did, because of the profound effect they had on us, but we never did catch their name. Or maybe we did know their name, but no one else seemed to. This can also be the case on a larger scale: not every influential movement, moment, or person makes the history books. Joe Hill, a labor activist and union song writer, was one of those people. We’ll listen to a story about him, the songs he inspired, and the message they carried through the ages by John McCutcheon. Then we’ll hear from John McCutcheon himself in an interview about Joe Hill’s unknown influence. Finally, we’ll finish with “In the Face of Evil” from Kate Dudding about the amazing, unnamed people who helped in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. We'll also hear about Anna Judah, who, together with her husband, Theodore Judah, helped lobby for a railroad route over the Sierra Nevada.

May 10, 2019 marks the sesquicentennial of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. On today's BITE, a conversation between Sam and Suzanne about the driving of the Golden Spike, and song called "In Silver, Iron, and in Gold," celebrating that milestone -- an achievement that changed America forever.

We have some examples of classic storytelling today. Everything from Jack tales, family legends, and personal anecdotes. We’ll hear Shonaleigh and Josh Goforth live from the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Also featured are two storytelling tracks from Octavia Sexton and Barbara McBride-Smith. We’ll end with a lovely hymn performed by Adam Booth and the Frederick Chorale.
