The Apple Seed

We have some examples of classic storytelling today. Everything from Jack tales, family legends, and personal anecdotes. We’ll hear Shonaleigh and Josh Goforth live from the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Also featured are two storytelling tracks from Octavia Sexton and Barbara McBride-Smith. We’ll end with a lovely hymn performed by Adam Booth and the Frederick Chorale.

Today’s stories do not fall in one single category. It’s a jambalaya of stories, mostly about our childhood experience. We’ll hear what it was like for Michael McCarty to raise a baby girl, then a story about an extraordinary grandmother, mother, and daughter from Bobby Norfolk, a folk song from John McCutcheon, and a person anecdote about school from Bill Harley.

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

On today's BITE, listen to a story by Kevin Kling about participating in a production of "The Nutcracker," along with conversation about what it's like to be an extra in the movies!

On today's BITE, we visit a carnival with Donald Davis and his little brother, Joe, to ride something called "The Octopus." If you've ever tackled a terrifying theme park ride and lived to tell the tale, Donald Davis' story is just right for you. Joining us in the studio to talk about it is Apple Seed assistant producer Jenny Goldsberry and her cousin. They'll chat about some of the rides they've been on. It's sure to bring back summertime memories for you to share with the people you love.

On today's BITE, we chat with Sadie Anderson about the Pamela Hanks story "Sir Frederick the Dragon,' about a dragon who exhibits character traits that Sadie thinks hit a little close to home. Things come out okay in the end for the dragon; you knew they would, right? We're pretty sure things will turn out okay for Sadie too, in spite of her competitive streak. You're sure to enjoy today's BITE!
