The Apple Seed episodes

  • Walnut
Some things become more valuable than their pawn-shop-price, more meaningful than their function. It’s those items that we’re talking about today: the objects and heirlooms that we give meaning to. Sam starts us off with a radio family journal entry that features a memory of his grandfather, and an unusually meaningful walnut shell. Then, we’ll listen to “Daddy’s Ashes” by Geraldine Buckley, a story about saying goodbye to a father and finding meaning in a book of poetry he gifted her. And finally, we’ll join the Apple Seed team in a roundtable discussion about some of the objects that mean the most to them.

  • **** BITES -- "The Power of Stories" by Donald Davis
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

On today's BITE, we talk to the reigning Mrs. Ogden, Utah. Her name is Jennifer (same as Jennifer Goldsbery, the assistant producer of the Apple Seed, who competed in the Mrs. Utah pageant with her, and invited her into the studio). Jennifer (our guest, not Jennifer Goldsberry) is also a math teacher, and talks about how she came to that profession after a history of failing math as an elementary school student. The conversation stems from listening to the wonderful story "The Power of Storeies," by Donald Davis. You're sure to enjoy today's BITE!

  • Stravinsky Went Down to Ogden
In this hour os stories, music, and conversation, we'll explore Faustian tales -- tales about deals with the Devil. We'll begin wiht a memory of Sam's, captured in a Radio Famly Journal entry about a "gang" he had with his brother and a couple of pals when they were in fourth grade. We'll also head to Ogden, Utah, where the NEXT ensemble is working to establish a chamber music scene in local restaurants, bars, and nightclubs (we'll hear them perform Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale," about a soldier who trades his violin to the Devil for a book that tells the future). We'll also read "The Smith Verholen" from "Christmas Tales of Flanders," in which a smith performs a kindly deed and winds up with three wishes that, in the end, help him best the devil in a Faustian bargain. Finally, we'll hear Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband, with a barn-burner of a live performance of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." There's lots to enjoy in this hour, brought to you by The Apple Seed.

  • Equations
In this episode, every story has a small connection to the next. These stories were organized by our stream of consciousness. We have a story from Jay O’ Callahan about a dinner party that leads into a story about riding a bus by Kevin Kling, then a storyabout robbery from the dressing room of John McCutcheon followed by a story about rice balls from Connie Regan-Blake. Our concluding story is one by Richard Martin about vampires. They may seem unrelated now, but believe us, they’re all related.

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). Today, we'll be joined in the studio by Alisha Staggs, the current Mrs. Utah. Mrs. Staggs talked to us about her platform (which includes programs encouraging kids to resolve conflicts in person and not on screen), and listened with us to stories by Sarah Malone (she also revealed to us her love of Disney movies as conversation-starters between her and her two kids). You'll enjoy the stories and conversation on today's BITE!
