The Apple Seed

Are you a troublemaker? Do you tend to look ogres in the face and laugh at them? Do you tend to swing baseball bats just a little too close to your brother’s head? Do you tease those who are paranoid? Do you use unethical marketing strategies to sell potholders? Then you’ll love today’s episode because all the stories include the elements above!

This episode includes stories of escape. Glenda Bonin tells a tale about a coyote outrunning four dogs. Jeff Gere tells a harrowing story about a young boy escaping Vietnam. Donald Davis will tell us about the time he ran off Goldie, the girlfriend of hisneighbor

In this hour, enjoy performances by The Acting Company of excerpts from The Secret Garden, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, and a springtime letter from Lewis Carroll. It's an hour of stories about New Life, recorded live in the Apple Seed studio before an audience. And as a special treat, you'll also hear songs from musical guest Cherie Call.

On today's BITE, enjoy a story about public transportation by Brenda Wong Aoki, with guest Stewart Forster and his wife, Allison Foster. Inspired by Brenda's story, Allison, Stewart, and Sam will all share their own stories about public transportation, and moments when a group of strangers became a "We."

All of today’s stories are very different from each other. That is because every story is centered on a family, and every family is different. You will hear Jewish tales about a hard-working father and tailor, and about mischievous hunchback brothers. We will also feature two stories about daughters entering preadolescence and dealing with it in different ways. Likely, you’ll remember a story about your family after hearing this episode.

From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a normal episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

On today's BITE, we'll listen to an animal tale by Laura Simms, a story from Zimbabwe called "Rabbit and Lion." We'll talk about the story with Morgen Raynolds, a storyteller from Montana who goes professionally by "Miss Mo." Morgen remembers hearing Laura Simms tell stories at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and realizing that she, Morgen, could be a storyteller too. It set Morgen on a path that she's still on, telling stories near and far, on all kinds of stages, for all kinds of people. You'll enjoy today's BITE!
