Breast augmentation or breast implant surgery has become a more popular surgical procedure throughout the years for various reasons. While it has many benefits, it also comes with potential risks such as capsular contracture, infection, breast implant illness, and more.
These risks are some of the reasons why many women opt to undergo breast explant surgery. That’s why it’s important to have a qualified plastic surgeon when considering surgery and to carefully assess both the risks and benefits of having breast implant surgery and other procedures.
My main take from the thousands of operations I’ve done is that we don't want to leave biofilm of any quantity in somebody. So what we do is remove all of what’s intact, if possible.
Women seek breast explant surgery for many reasons. There are those who want to lessen the pain from symptoms associated with breast implant illness like brain fog, sound and light sensitivity, shortness of breath, heart palpitations or chest tightness, neurologic symptoms in the arms, nerve pain, muscle pain, and joint pain, while some even experience gastrointestinal symptoms.
Whereas some are just tired and unhappy with their implants, some undergo breast explant surgery for breast reconstruction because they have issues with the appearance of their breasts. Maybe they’re uncomfortable with the size or maybe there are gaps or capsular contracture.
It’s important to carefully consider having breast explant surgery and to have a qualified plastic surgeon whom you can trust. It also helps to have a great support system around you throughout the process.
In our Holistic Accelerated Recovery Program, we have staff in place to provide more emotional support. I have several staff members who've had explant surgery, including our patient advocate and leader of our heart program. If they want to discuss this, we have discovery sessions you can participate in as well.
In our previous episodes, we’ve talked about how inflammation worsens the illness. That’s why we have to figure out whether or not there’s inflammation in the breast implants. So what we do is we work up all the factors that contribute to inflammation by testing through our Holistic Accelerated Recovery Program (HARP) to really prepare the patients and optimize them for surgery.

Over the years, stem cells have gained significant attention for their remarkable ability to transform into various cell types, presenting immense potential for regenerative medicine and treatment for a wide range of diseases. This growing interest has been driven by a series of groundbreaking discoveries and significant advancements in stem cell research. In the context of breast implants and breast implant illness, stem cells offer promising solutions for tissue regeneration and recovery, providing new hope for those seeking alternative treatments.
Whether you're curious about the science behind stem cells or considering a procedure involving fat transfer, this episode is packed with valuable insights to guide you on your journey to better health and wellness. Let’s explore more about how stem cells are transforming the medical field, providing new avenues for treatment and recovery. We'll dive into valuable insights and the latest advancements, helping you understand the incredible potential of stem cells and their benefits.
I’ve recently attended several notable conferences where I gained valuable insights and innovations that I’m eager to integrate into our clinic. Some of these advancements include the incorporation of more lymphatic massage techniques, the introduction of NanoVi technology to improve protein folding and recovery, and the use of H-Wave therapy to further enhance lymphatic drainage and aid in patient recovery.
For today, however, let’s focus on fat transfers. Drawing from my extensive experience with fat transfers, a technique I’ve refined over many years, I explain that fat transfers are effective because they use the patient’s own tissue, making them autologous and thus free from the risks associated with donor tissues, such as genetic mismatches.
Fat transfers are versatile, as adipose-derived stem cells can differentiate into fat cells, bone cells, or cartilage, providing a range of benefits. My initial interest in this technique stemmed from a personal desire to regenerate cartilage in my knees after multiple surgeries, leading to a deep understanding of the procedure’s potential.
With extensive experience in sarcoma reconstruction, I can confidently say that fat transfers are safe when performed correctly. It's essential not to transfer fat to areas with existing tumors or sarcomas, as these mesenchymal regions could complicate the procedure.
For breast augmentation and reconstruction, fat transfers have been effective for many years, and I have conducted numerous procedures since 2005. Successful outcomes depend on transferring a mixture of adipocytes, vascular cells, and adipose-derived stem cells. This technique requires precise placement of fat in specific areas to avoid complications and ensure proper integration with the surrounding tissue.
There were early safety concerns regarding fat transfers for cosmetic purposes, such as buttock augmentation, due to technical issues when the procedure first gained popularity in South America and Miami. However, with advancements in techniques and improved safety measures, fat transfers for both buttock and breast augmentation have become reliable and effective procedures.
When the skin gets really tense, you'll notice a condition called "peau d'orange," where the surface of the skin starts to look like the surface of an orange. This indicates too much pressure and that expansion should stop. Unlike implants, which can hold their shape and maintain more volume, fat cannot be continuously added. The amount of fat that can be added depends on the initial condition of the skin. For younger clients with tight skin, multiple sessions may be needed to gradually increase volume.
In cases where I remove implants that have been in place for a long time, often after weight changes, pregnancies, or breastfeeding, the skin is usually stretched out. After removing the implant with its capsular material intact, I don't fill the old implant pocket and instead, place the fat beneath the skin, where it belongs, and let it heal.
Adipose-derived stem cells in the fat offer numerous benefits, aiding in wound rejuvenation and healing. They can help turn genes on, produce exosomes, modulate immune responses, and improve mitochondrial function. This is why fat transfers are more than just about the fat itself – they bring substantial healing properties.
To maintain the results over time, factors like diet, detoxification ability, and gut health are crucial. We strongly advocate for fat transfers, leveraging the healing power of stem cells. We also offer stem cell harvesting and banking, a process I personally undergo every three to six months. Using our cell surgical device and extensive experience since 1998, we continually strive to enhance our offerings and improve patient outcomes.

Breast explant surgery or breast implant removal is a surgical procedure commonly done for various reasons such as implant issues, breast reconstruction, implant rupture, dissatisfaction with the appearance of the implants, or other cosmetic purposes.
In breast explant surgery, the implants alone may be removed or the surrounding scar tissue may also be included. In some circumstances, a breast lift may be done with the explant procedure to enhance the look of the breasts.
In today’s episode, we’re going to discuss what breast explant surgery is and why people want to undergo such surgery.
When we’re talking about breast explant surgery, we’re referring to the removal of breast implants and any scar tissue formed around the implants. Nowadays, many plastic surgeons do explants for various reasons.
My approach to explant surgery is to everything out in its entirety, which is why many people seek me out for that very reason. Typically, my clients are those who had a placement of a device either for cancer reconstruction or other cosmetic purposes and are experiencing symptoms associated with breast implant illness.
The most common symptoms experienced by my patients are anxiety, depression, brain fog, dry eyes, headache, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, nerve pain down their arms or legs, joint pain, and other gastrointestinal issues.
Oftentimes, patients find me through what I offer in terms of holistic rejuvenation with fat transfer. In fact, I’ve been doing fat transfer since the 2000s for cancer reconstruction and other cosmetic purposes. I'm very comfortable with doing these operations and I have already refined my process, having done over 1,500 fat transfers.
When it comes to breast lifts, we have different kinds of techniques such as vertical, crescent, peri-areolar, and anchor breast lifts. The patients may have a preferred kind but it actually depends on the necessity.
If the patient had a peri-areolar placement, then we try to use that scar and remove the implant intact through it. The average length of a surgery is about two and a half hours. If we add a lifting procedure, it's a little over three hours.
Besides providing or enhancing the breast volume, it also helps offset some visual changes that the patient's not happy with. This is why as much as I can, I try to help patients learn about fat transfers and make them understand from my perspective.
Doing these operations can be draining, especially mentally, so it’s best for patients to have a great support system that shows up to help them and provide much-needed support.

Breast implants are said to be a transformative solution for individuals seeking aesthetic enhancement or breast reconstruction. However, beneath their promise of confidence and beauty lie potential risks that are often overlooked. Breast Implant Illness (BII) underscores the importance of thorough patient education and informed consent, highlighting the complexities and implications associated with implants. That is why there is a need for us to raise more awareness about the realities of breast implant surgery, ensuring that patients are fully informed about the risks and potential consequences.
I'm thrilled to introduce our guest for today's episode – Dr. Thomas Chung. We share a similar background in terms of experience and training, which initially intrigued me since he has a clear and insightful understanding of breast implant illness, and we'll delve into that throughout this episode.
What struck me about Dr. Chung is his extensive experience in microsurgery, a field in which we've both worked. Dr. Chung's journey began with his training in the Navy, where he completed his internship and general surgery residency at Walter Reed, then part of the National Naval Medical Center consortium in DC. During his residency, he managed numerous casualties from conflicts like Fallujah, serving as chief of the trauma service with a daily census of 30 to 40 injured veterans. After finishing his general surgery training, he pursued a fellowship at Johns Hopkins, launching his plastic surgery career before returning to Walter Reed to handle more trauma cases.
His work involved extensive microsurgery, such as reconstructing an entire abdominal wall for a survivor of a suicide bombing and performing numerous extremity-free flaps and breast reconstructions using deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps. Over the first seven to eight years, Dr. Chung climbed the Navy's ranks, taking on leadership roles like Chief of Surgery, Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, and ultimately Chief Medical Officer for the San Diego region.
Dr. Chung remains passionate about plastic and aesthetic surgery despite his executive responsibilities. Notably, he performs many explant surgeries for patients experiencing issues after long-term breast implant use.
In my previous episodes, I've extensively discussed breast implant illness and Dr. Chung agrees that implants may cause more than just localized pain or discomfort. He believes there's something inherently toxic about implants that science can explain and this understanding aligns with groundbreaking surgical advancements by the Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Joseph Murray. Dr. Murray's work on organ transplants demonstrates the need for immunosuppression to prevent rejection.
We see chronic inflammation in patients with implants, similar to organ rejection. In both scenarios, if the initial post-surgery period goes well, complications are less likely. However, issues during this time can lead to significant problems. For cancer patients undergoing reconstruction, immunosuppression can exacerbate complications, demonstrating the delicate balance required to manage immune responses.
Using analogies from organ transplants helps patients understand that their bodies might be "rejecting" implants, causing chronic inflammation. This perspective can help them grasp the need for proper management and treatment strategies, even if those include higher doses of immunosuppressants like prednisone to manage their symptoms effectively.
When it comes to resolving issues with breast implants, focusing on the concept of explants and the importance of addressing capsules surrounding the implants is vital. We use the splinter analogy to explain the body's reaction to foreign objects. Just as a splinter in your finger causes pain and inflammation until it's removed, so does the body react to implants, leading to discomfort and potential toxicity. Removing the splinter provides immediate relief, compared to the relief patients might experience after explant surgery.
Dr. Chung appreciates the simplicity of this analogy, which helps patients understand the body's rejection response. He relates it to his experience on transplant rotations, where managing immune responses to transplanted organs was crucial. He emphasizes the importance of detailed procedures in removing implants, akin to meticulous methods used in cancer surgeries to reduce recurrence risks.
Both Dr. Chung and I have extensive experience dealing with complications from implants, whether in cancer patients or veterans needing reconstructive surgery. We emphasize that implants can be a necessary part of treatment but also come with risks that must be clearly communicated to patients.
Dr. Chung admitted that he initially didn’t know much about implant-related issues despite performing many breast augmentations. He often dealt with patients who had capsular contracture, a condition where the scar tissue around the implant tightens and causes pain or deformity. In these cases, he would remove the implant and the capsule and then insert a new implant, only for the problem to eventually recur.
I would like to highlight fat transfers as a viable alternative to implants. Fat transfers can help refine and improve reconstructive results by adding volume, achieving a natural look without the risks associated with implants. Dr. Chung supports this approach, noting that while fat transfers don’t create the same pressure as implants, they offer a safe and effective option for many patients.
Implants provide more projection and pressure, pushing out the skin envelope, especially beneficial for patients with tighter skin or certain deformities like tuberous breasts. Fat transfers, on the other hand, follow the natural curvature of the breast, adding volume and creating a natural look without the risks associated with implants.
Fat transfers are particularly effective for patients who have more lax skin, often due to previous pregnancies, breastfeeding, or prior implants, which act like tissue expanders. While fat transfers don’t provide the same upper pole fullness or projection as implants, they can achieve a satisfactory result by filling out the skin and providing a natural appearance. The success rate of fat transfers is generally high, especially in younger patients with adequate fat, countering any misconceptions that they don't work well. This method is also frequently used in oncologic reconstruction to refine and improve outcomes.
The success of fat transfers is influenced by various factors, each playing a significant role in determining the outcome of the procedure. One crucial factor is the age of the patient. Younger individuals, typically those in their 20s, often experience better outcomes from fat transfers. This is attributed to their more favorable hormone levels and metabolism, which contribute to enhanced tissue regeneration and integration of the transferred fat. Additionally, younger patients tend to have healthier skin with better elasticity, allowing for more seamless integration of the injected fat and resulting in a more natural appearance.
Conversely, older patients, particularly those over the age of 35, may encounter challenges that can affect the success of fat transfers. Hormonal imbalances, a common occurrence with age, can impact the body's ability to heal and regenerate tissue effectively. Metabolic issues, such as slower metabolism or insulin resistance, can also hinder the body's ability to process and integrate the transferred fat. Furthermore, poor diet and nutritional deficiencies prevalent in some older individuals can compromise tissue health and overall healing capacity, leading to suboptimal outcomes from fat transfer procedures.
On the technical aspects of fat transfer, there is about 20-30% of the injected fat that typically gets absorbed by the body. This process is influenced by the patient's skin condition, with factors like previous pregnancies, weight changes, and age affecting skin expansion and the overall success of the procedure.
It's essential for patients and surgeons to recognize these factors and consider them when planning and performing fat transfer procedures. Tailoring the approach to address specific challenges associated with age can help optimize outcomes and ensure patient satisfaction. Moreover, implementing comprehensive preoperative assessments and postoperative care regimens that address hormonal balance, metabolic health, and nutritional status can further enhance the success of fat transfer procedures in older patients.
We want to emphasize that the technical process of fat transfer—harvesting, processing, and reinjecting fat—is not the issue. Instead, the patient's overall health and wellness play a critical role in the success and maintenance of the results. That’s why I developed a comprehensive program that addresses genetics, detoxification, toxicity issues, gut health, food sensitivities, and hormone balance to optimize recovery and maintain results.

Hydrogen plays a crucial role not just in managing oxidative stress and inflammation but also in supporting overall cellular health and enhancing various bodily functions. Beyond its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it has been shown to offer several additional benefits that contribute to overall well-being.
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Paul Barattiero, a renowned expert who has lectured worldwide for over 22 years, focusing on the benefits of hydrogen gas in water. This aims to raise awareness of how molecular hydrogen can reduce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
I met Dr. Paul Barattiero in September 2022 at a collaborative meeting where I was left impressed with his presentation of scientific literature and the development of his water filtration system. Dr. Paul’s journey began with his wife, who was ill for the first 10 years of their marriage, suffering from anemia, thyroid issues, and gynecological problems. In his commitment to help her, he discovered the benefits of hydrogen-enriched water, which significantly improved her health. This experience led him to create the Echo Water System, aiming to help others facing similar challenges.
The sad reality is that water quality has drastically diminished over time. Tests and laws governing water quality are outdated, and the number of chemicals and pollutants in water has increased significantly since then. In fact, even supposedly pristine wells can be contaminated by pesticides sprayed within a 300-mile radius. It is thus essential to filter out contaminants from any water source, especially municipal supplies, to prevent our bodies from becoming the filters.
When it comes to water filtration, the density and type of filter media are crucial. While the carbon filter is effective for removing organic contaminants, it is less effective against inorganic substances like pesticides, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals. As such, Dr. Paul created a filter that effectively removes contaminants because many filters on the market are inadequate. He explains that simply having carbon in a filter isn't enough; the format and amount of the media are critical.
For whole-house systems, catalytic carbon is used instead of activated carbon because it is more effective for contaminants like fluoride. For drinking water, Dr. Paul prefers reverse osmosis, which filters down to 0.0001 microns, effectively removing tiny particles such as plastics and pharmaceuticals. He designed a whole-house system that is more affordable and effective than many on the market, emphasizing the importance of proper engineering and adequate media for effective water filtration.
When discussing water quality with patients, I emphasize the importance of addressing oxidative stress, cellular stress, and inflammation – both acute and chronic. Many of my patients suffer from chronic inflammation, such as those with breast implant issues. Improving air, fluid, and food quality is crucial for health, especially before undergoing medical procedures.
Despite advising against using plastic bottles due to harmful phthalates, many patients still use them, particularly those who travel. The good thing is that Dr. Paul’s portable Echo Go Plus device for hydrogen water is a great solution as it is compact, free of harmful plastics, and ideal for travel. It uses purified or filtered water to generate hydrogen-rich water, which can help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.
The rise in popularity of Dr. Paul’s brand caused a significant increase in demand. However, the market has also seen a surge in counterfeit products falsely marketed which has been a challenge to address. These knockoffs often misuse Dr. Paul’s videos and endorsements, misleading consumers. Despite the legal challenges, the Echo brand remains dedicated to providing high-quality, effective hydrogen water solutions.
Hydrogen is crucial for daily living and postoperative recovery as it acts as a selective antioxidant, targeting harmful reactive oxygen species without affecting beneficial radicals. It also promotes the production of nitric oxide, peptides, and collagen, essential for overall health. Its innate ability to support various physiological processes makes it a vital component for maintaining health and mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation.
I advise patients to drink filtered or hydrogen water and add electrolytes and proteins to aid in reducing tissue swelling. Proper hydration should be half your body weight in ounces of water daily. It's essential to drink pure water, as water with contaminants can be rejected by the body, leading to dehydration.
Proper hydration with high-quality water is crucial for health as our bodies depend on water for optimal health, as it constitutes a significant portion of our blood, brain, and other tissues. Adding hydrogen gas to the water enhances its benefits by lowering inflammation and oxidative stress.
The body naturally produces hydrogen in the colon through anaerobic bacteria, converting fatty acids and fiber into hydrogen. However, many people have gut issues that prevent this, leading to increased oxidative stress and inflammation, contributing to various diseases. That’s why Dr. Paul developed the Echo Water System to provide hydrogen-enriched water to help mitigate these issues. And now, it plays a critical role in producing stomach acid and managing digestive disorders.
Gut health plays a vital role in nutrient absorption and the immune process. A dysfunctional gut can have severe consequences, especially for patients with chronic inflammation, as their bodies struggle to absorb nutrients. To address this, we use liposomal and liquid supplements for better absorption in the oral cavity and recommend drinking hydrogen water to reduce oxidative stress and support healthy bacteria growth in the gut.
Assimilation and digestion rely heavily on fermentation and the right balance of gut bacteria. Ideally, the gut should have 96-99% anaerobic bacteria, but antibiotics, heavy metals, and pesticides can disrupt this balance. Hydrogen, being electron-rich, helps create an optimal environment for anaerobic bacteria by providing a negative electrical potential in the gut. This supports antioxidant pathways, reduces inflammation, and can alleviate anxiety and depression. When the gut environment is corrected, people can properly digest fiber and absorb nutrients, leading to improved overall health.
Using the Echo hydrogen water bottle consistently, typically three to six times a day for two weeks, can lead to significant health improvements. After some time, people report better digestion, fewer food sensitivities, and improved sleep. The hydrogen helps restore gut bacteria, allowing people to eat a wider variety of foods and experience overall enhanced well-being.
Maintaining these benefits requires continuous use of hydrogen water, especially given the pervasive presence of pesticides and harmful chemicals in food and the environment. Proper gut health depends on ongoing management due to daily exposure from air, water, and personal care products. Regularly drinking hydrogen water can counteract these exposures and support overall health.

Although undergoing breast implant surgery has benefits, it also involves short-term and long-term risks like any other surgical procedure. There could be bleeding, infection, and scarring as short-term risks while for long-term risks, there are cases involving capsular contracture.
Reasons as to why women get breast implants vary but more than that and the benefits of having implants, they should also be informed by their provider about the risks of breast implant surgery. That’s why I’m here to discuss breast implant surgery and the risks that come with it.
We all know that as we age, we experience many physical changes. Some people lose weight and some gain weight. However, your implants will remain the same. But it is the breast appearance that we’re more concerned about as they may start to sag off of the implants.
When that happens, you’re more likely to need additional surgery. In case the tissue is aging off, you can recommend to your patient to undergo a lift surgery. This may be the case for women who were pregnant or had children and experienced expansion of the tissues with milk production and contraction after discontinuing breastfeeding. There may be stretch marks or other physical changes to the breast aesthetics.
In relation to the changes caused by various factors, we mentioned having a breast lift surgery otherwise known as mastopexy augmentation. Its purpose is to lift, reshape, and tighten the breasts for the improvement of their appearance.
If you're considering having procedures involving the skin, however, keep in mind there will likely be more complications related to skin infections. Obviously, there's more scarring when you're doing something like that because it's a visual scar that is going to be down the front of the breast and around the areola complex, unlike that in a primary augmentation, where it's probably under the fold around the nipple or in the axilla.
Like I always say, it’s important for you to choose a reputable board-certified plastic surgeon for these types of procedures. They have undergone a certification process demonstrating their knowledge and skill to have them qualified to perform breast implant surgery.
As a professional who did oncologic reconstruction for a long time, I was faced with many challenges with people who have pre-existing medical conditions. These cases trained us to be careful at every step of the process.
That’s why if a young woman came in for a consultation for a breast augmentation and upon collecting her information, I discovered she has a family history of lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or other autoimmune disorder, I would not recommend that she get a breast implant for augmentation.
Your surgeon should make sure that they’re doing their best to monitor your situation before, during, and even after your surgery to avoid any complications. Before surgery, a plastic surgeon should conduct a thorough evaluation of the patient's health history and family history, including any medical conditions, medications, and allergies.
During the surgery, your plastic surgeon must take all the precautions in ensuring a safe and successful procedure. And after surgery, it's important for your surgeon to closely monitor your recovery and your overall healing process. Follow-up appointments and consultations are also crucial to address any concerns should there be any.

While breast implants or breast augmentation are generally considered safe and effective, there has been growing concern about their potential link to neurological symptoms. There have been several patients over the past years complaining about symptoms of neural inflammation such as brain fog, headache, sound sensitivity and light sensitivity.
And that’s why we’re here to shed light on this topic. In this episode, we’ll answer the concern of many as regards breast implants and whether or not they can cause neurological symptoms.
Whenever a patient tells me they’re experiencing headaches, light and sound sensitivity and brain fog, my initial thought is that it is related to neural inflammation and environmental toxicity.
It must be determined whether or not the patient has been exposed to environmental toxins because these toxins would complicate neural inflammation. Many cases in Texas, Florida, California, and Georgie are rooted from this circumstance.
We really have to take into consideration the environment the patient is in. Being exposed to moist environments like being near rivers, oceans, lakes, or the like where there may be high mold counts which you’re unaware of triggers inflammation and other issues or complications in having breast implants.
If someone had a preexisting neurologic condition, this could certainly be worsened in conjunction with a mold exposure. And as we've discussed in our previous episodes, breast implants can be responsible for inflammation. Thus, these other disease processes can result in further inflammation and give you neurologic symptoms.
We conduct a lot of tests to really identify the issues and further understand what’s happening. We have toxicity testing and inflammation testing which greatly helps in resolving these issues.
As much as possible, we try to start everybody on Dr. Rob’s Solutions Immune Support bundle for the stimulation of the system to excrete the toxins in the urine. Consequently, we'll have a better idea on how to characterize and develop treatment plans.
We closely and regularly monitor the patient to see how they’re managing their inflammation. We check for signs and symptoms of specific inflammatory processes to determine what we can do to provide them help.
More than the help we provide, we make sure our patients are cared for as we help them throughout their healing journey. So what we always do is be as comprehensive as possible.

By embracing a holistic approach that considers not only the surgical procedure itself but also the patient's overall health and well-being, practitioners can optimize the recovery process and enhance long-term outcomes. Functional medicine emphasizes the interconnectedness of various bodily systems, recognizing the importance of factors such as nutrition, inflammation management, and stress reduction in promoting healing. When applied with conventional techniques, these can play a crucial role in supporting patients more comprehensively and effectively.
In this compelling discussion with Taylor Dukes, we explore the various aspects of recovery in her brain tumor healing journey, shedding light on the importance of holistic approaches to healing, from addressing inflammation to optimizing restorative sleep. Join us as we unravel personal narratives, share valuable insights, and highlight the critical role of support systems in the recovery process.
Taylor recounts a period of significant stress and trauma in their life, exacerbated by working night shifts in an ICU in Austin, Texas. Despite being previously healthy, she found herself experiencing various health issues, including hair loss, joint pain, stomach problems, and skin inflammation. Despite consulting various specialists and undergoing invasive procedures, she struggled to find answers to her declining health.
Her desperation to recover led her to seek alternative approaches, eventually leading her to functional medicine practitioner Ann Shippy, who significantly improved her health through testing and dietary changes. This experience propelled her into the field of functional medicine, where she subsequently worked as a nurse for Amy Myers and eventually opened her own practice.
Amidst her newfound health and career success, she received a Prenuvo scan – a full-body preventative scan. This led to the shocking discovery of a brain tumor, despite her lack of symptoms. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the integrative approach of functional medicine, combining conventional and holistic practices to address illness at its roots. Her experiences highlight the significance of thorough patient history and consideration of factors like lifestyle, genetics, and environment for achieving optimal health outcomes.
Following the unexpected discovery of a brain tumor, Taylor went through the stages of acceptance and preparation. She also explored the treatment options available. With an integrative approach to healthcare in mind, she sought complementary methods to address the tumor, emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention.
Utilizing a combination of diet modifications, alternative therapies, and stress reduction techniques, she diligently prepared her body for surgery over a span of five months. This proactive approach not only allowed her to explore various treatment modalities but also facilitated the remarkable feat of shrinking the tumor by half before undergoing surgery. Collaborating with healthcare professionals across different disciplines, including a neurosurgeon and integrative treatment centers, she took charge of their healing journey with determination and resilience.
Addressing inflammation is a cornerstone of my approach to health and wellness, and it's something I consistently highlight. Whether you're dealing with chronic health issues or simply striving for optimal well-being, managing inflammation is key. One of the most powerful tools in combating inflammation is through dietary intervention, and this is where the ketogenic diet comes into play.
A strict ketogenic diet involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and focusing on clean, whole foods that are rich in healthy fats and nutrient-dense, low-glycemic vegetables. A keto diet can help to rebalance inflammatory responses and processes in the body. However, it's important to note that not all ketogenic diets are created equal. While some may opt for a more lenient approach, indulging in processed and inflammatory foods, we encourage individuals to have a strict, clean ketogenic diet instead.
The aftermath of surgery is often similar to a delicate dance, with patients backpedaling and preparing for the next set of events. In Taylor’s case, her meticulous preparation undoubtedly paved the way for a more efficient recovery. However, the confusion among providers regarding surgical outcomes isn't solely due to technical advancements; rather, it's deeply intertwined with the patient's overall health status and risk factors. From pre-surgery preparations to post-operative care, every aspect plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal outcomes.
In a time where trust in medical professionals is increasingly fragile, it's essential to provide patients with transparent explanations and evidence-based recommendations. Taylor’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of proactive, holistic care, where surgery is just one piece of the puzzle.
The period between surgeries wasn't merely a waiting game; it was a time of profound physical, mental, and emotional healing. From grappling with sleep disturbances to confronting the need for patience in the recovery process, every step brought its own set of challenges and lessons. Yet, through it all, Taylor remained steadfast in her commitment to her well-being, recognizing that true healing extends far beyond the operating room. That's why it’s crucial to find a provider who not only understands your medical history but also approaches your treatment with empathy and intuition.
Rest is also one of the major contributors to the healing process, particularly for the brain. There's often confusion about why we emphasize hormones and sleep so much, but it's crucial, especially after surgery. When someone finds themselves needing to take afternoon naps or experiencing disrupted sleep patterns, it's a sign that something's amiss.
Adequate rest allows the brain to repair and regenerate, facilitating cognitive function and emotional well-being. For someone recovering from brain surgery, ensuring quality sleep is paramount, as it supports the body's natural healing mechanisms and helps mitigate potential complications.
Taylor's experience highlights the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule to facilitate deep, uninterrupted sleep, which is vital for the healing process. Without adequate rest, recovery can be prolonged, leading to increased fatigue and inflammation. She emphasizes the need for prioritizing self-care, including stress regulation, deep breathing, and unplugging from technology, as essential strategies to support healing.
Taylor also addresses why she didn't remove her breast implants sooner, explaining that financial constraints and life circumstances played a significant role. She acknowledges that she wishes she had acted sooner but hopes her experience encourages others to take proactive steps for their health, especially if they have the means to do so.
Ultimately, there are no shortcuts when it comes to self-care, and investing in these practices is essential for optimal recovery outcomes. Taylor hopes that sharing her story and the resources she provides will inspire others to prioritize their health. She emphasizes the importance of taking care of the body, managing stress, and eating clean, not as a chore but as a way to enhance overall well-being.
It is crucial for doctors to provide patients with comprehensive information so they can make informed decisions about their health. By ensuring that patients are fully informed about the potential risks and benefits of medical interventions like implants, doctors empower them to take an active role in their healthcare journey.
Biofilm, which is found on various implants, has become increasingly prevalent. Unfortunately, its implications for implant recipients are often not adequately disclosed. As a result, many patients may not fully understand the risks associated with biofilm and its potential impact on their health. It is crucial for healthcare providers to ensure that patients are well-informed about biofilm and its implications before undergoing implant procedures.
In my practice, I prioritize leveraging genetics to tailor treatment plans uniquely to each patient, aiming to optimize outcomes based on their genetic predispositions and responses to various interventions. This personalized approach allows for more targeted and effective care, as it takes into account individual differences and genetic factors that may influence treatment efficacy.
Additionally, the support from loved ones throughout the decision-making process plays a vital role in patient well-being and recovery. Their encouragement and understanding can provide invaluable emotional support and contribute significantly to a patient's overall resilience and confidence in their treatment journey.
After surgery, it's crucial to prioritize a low-inflammatory diet, including avoiding gluten, dairy, processed foods, refined sugars, and seed oils. The good news is that The Well in Austin is one of the few places that offers such options, providing patients with nutritious meals to support their recovery.
After surgery, it's crucial to prioritize rest and provide your body with the time it needs to heal. However, integrating gentle movement, spending time outdoors in the fresh air, and soaking up some sunshine can also play a significant role in facilitating recovery. These simple yet effective strategies can help boost mood, enhance circulation, and promote overall well-being during the healing process.
In addition to rest and physical activity, proper nutrition is paramount for supporting the body's recovery efforts. Consuming nutrient-rich foods that are high in electrolytes, minerals, and protein can provide the essential building blocks necessary for tissue repair and regeneration. By fueling the body with the right nutrients, patients can optimize their healing potential and expedite the recovery process.
Furthermore, post-operative care extends beyond the immediate aftermath of surgery. It encompasses ongoing support and guidance to address any underlying health issues and ensure a comprehensive approach to healing. Each patient's journey is unique, and personalized care tailored to their specific needs is essential for promoting long-term recovery and wellness.
Central to this personalized approach is the recognition of bio-individuality – the understanding that every individual is unique and may respond differently to various treatments and interventions. By acknowledging and addressing these individual differences, healthcare providers can develop tailored treatment plans that optimize outcomes and support each patient's unique path to recovery.
Moreover, emphasizing the importance of personalized care underscores the need for healthcare providers to consider a range of factors, including genetics, gut health, immune function, and dietary sensitivities. By taking a holistic approach that considers these diverse elements, healthcare providers can develop comprehensive treatment strategies that address the root causes of inflammation and promote sustainable healing.
Preoperative testing and detox programs are also integral parts of our comprehensive approach to surgery and recovery. Again, I want to emphasize that we must prioritize reducing inflammation through a combination of methods tailored to each patient's unique needs.

While the traditional Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems have long been relied upon to regulate indoor temperature and humidity, they cannot often effectively address the diverse range of indoor air pollutants that pose health risks to occupants. There is a need for us to rethink our approach to indoor air quality, moving beyond the limitations of traditional HVAC systems and embracing innovative solutions like those offered by JASPR.
For this episode, it’s a pleasure to be joined by Mike Feldstein, the founder of JASPR and an air quality expert. His mission is to enhance air quality and improve human health through cutting-edge air quality science and technology.
Air quality is significant in our daily lives as it directly impacts our health and well-being. Mike emphasizes the importance of understanding how basic heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems fall short in protecting against pollutants like mold, especially in the aftermath of natural disasters.
He explains that HVAC systems have remained relatively unchanged for decades, primarily designed for cost-effective heating and cooling rather than air purification. While some accessories can help, such as adding humidity in dry climates, attempting to enhance air quality by simply upgrading filters can actually hinder system performance and efficiency. He also emphasizes the need for a separate, dedicated air filtration system with its own fan to ensure continuous, effective air cleaning.
With the need to move beyond the limitations of traditional HVAC systems, the challenge lies in practical implementation. It then becomes more important that we continue to raise awareness and educate more people. Explaining the importance of air quality to clients becomes critical, especially for those dealing with chronic inflammatory symptoms. By demonstrating the impact of air quality improvements wherever they go, individuals can grasp the connection between their surroundings and their health.
Tools like CO2 detectors and particle counters provide tangible evidence of indoor air pollution, prompting individuals to take action to improve their environments. By making air quality tangible and relatable, we can empower people to prioritize clean air as they do clean water and food.
Understanding and addressing microscopic pollutants in indoor air, particularly mold spores, is crucial. However, it is challenging to comprehend the significance of particles that are invisible to the naked eye, such as those measuring between three to 40 microns, which can have detrimental effects on health.
We also discuss the role of air quality monitoring tools in visualizing indoor pollution levels. By using devices like air quality monitors, individuals can gain tangible evidence of indoor air contaminants, prompting them to take action to improve air quality. This hands-on approach to understanding indoor air pollution empowers people to make informed decisions about their indoor environments and take steps to create healthier living spaces.
Toxicity in schools arises from various sources, including poor ventilation, inadequate filtration systems, and the presence of airborne pollutants such as allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter. These pollutants can exacerbate respiratory conditions, trigger allergies, and negatively impact cognitive function and academic performance.
Air purification is important, particularly for individuals with genetic challenges in detoxifying toxins. There is a great need for awareness and action regarding indoor air quality, especially for families with children experiencing health issues like allergies and frequent illnesses. Through JASPR air purifiers, families can address these concerns effectively.
The purifiers are designed to remove a wide range of pollutants, including airborne toxins, allergens, and contaminants, providing cleaner and healthier air for indoor environments. By investing in JASPR air purifiers, families can create a safer and more comfortable living environment, particularly beneficial for children with sensitivities or respiratory issues.
The issue of poor quality also extends to places like airports. And so, we must consider all aspects of health, including the quality of fluids and food intake. Mike emphasizes the importance of eliminating potential sources of contamination, such as leaving diapers in children's bedrooms, which can contribute to indoor air pollution and pose health risks.
In addition to addressing sources of contamination like diapers in bedrooms, implementing effective air purification systems is crucial in mitigating indoor air pollution, particularly in high-traffic areas like airports. With proper filtration and purification measures in place, airports can enhance the overall experience for passengers while prioritizing their health and well-being.
There are different options available for air purification. That’s why JASPR air purifiers have evolved from an industrial-grade product to a more accessible solution for households. Mike explains the considerations involved in determining the appropriate placement of air purifiers based on square footage and ventilation systems.
Furthermore, Mike elaborates on the importance of understanding the unique needs of each household when selecting an air purification solution. Factors such as the presence of respiratory issues, allergies, or environmental sensitivities may influence the choice of air purifier model and placement within the home.
Additionally, considerations such as noise level, aesthetic appeal, and ease of maintenance play a crucial role in ensuring that the air purifier seamlessly integrates into the household environment. By providing customizable options and expert guidance, JASPR aims to empower individuals and families to take control of their indoor air quality and create healthier living spaces tailored to their specific needs.
Addressing the root causes of allergic reactions, including food sensitivities and environmental factors like air quality, is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. Food sensitivities can manifest as allergic symptoms, such as hay fever-like reactions, highlighting the importance of understanding and managing dietary triggers. Additionally, environmental factors like mold exposure can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues, underscoring the need for proactive measures to improve indoor air quality.
The disparity between traditional home inspections and assessments for potential health hazards within homes, such as mold exposure, is not only notable but also alarming. While traditional home inspections focus primarily on structural integrity and mechanical systems like water heaters and furnaces, they often overlook crucial aspects of indoor air quality and environmental pollutants. This oversight means that homeowners may unknowingly move into properties having hidden health risks, putting themselves and their families at risk.
Mold exposure, for example, is a pervasive issue that can lead to health problems, from respiratory issues to allergic reactions and even neurological symptoms. Yet, many homebuyers are left in the dark about the presence of mold until it's too late.
Mike advocates for a proactive approach to managing health risks associated with environmental pollutants. The evolving understanding of health impacts associated with environmental factors like microplastics and mold exposure, and genetic testing to assess individuals' ability to detoxify pathways such as glutathioneization and methylation in the detoxification process becomes paramount.
To enhance immune function and support natural detoxification, focusing on factors like air quality, fluid intake, and food quality is key. This approach, combined with personalized wellness plans based on genetic testing, toxicity testing, and gut health assessments, allows for precise and individualized therapy.

Oral health isn't just about having a nice smile; it's essential for our overall health, impacting different areas of our well-being. Similarly, when considering breast implants, it's crucial to recognize that their impact extends beyond cosmetic enhancement, potentially affecting overall health. Understanding the interplay between oral health and systemic health is vital for making informed decisions about medical interventions and ensuring holistic well-being.
Embark on a journey through the world of holistic health and dental care with insights from Dr. Kelly Blodgett – a biologic dentist from Portland, Oregon. In today’s episode, we discuss the intricate connection between oral and overall health, the impact of environmental factors, and the importance of informed decision-making for optimal well-being.
I deeply resonate with the principles Dr. Blodgett upholds, especially regarding oral health practices, particularly in patients with conditions like breast implant illness. Many patients are on a journey to rid their bodies of foreign substances that could potentially trigger inflammation, and biologic dentistry offers valuable insights and techniques to support them along this path.
While it's widely acknowledged in both the dental and medical communities that gum disease is a significant issue, the attention it receives sometimes overshadows other potential sources of inflammation. Dr. Blodgett has observed the risk associated with root canals. The process of performing a root canal effectively creates a dead organ within the body by removing the tooth's blood supply. What's concerning is that the porous nature of the dentin surface allows microbes to infiltrate and thrive within these teeth, essentially turning them into chronic sources of toxicity. Over the years, Dr. Blodgett has seen remarkable improvements in patients' overall health following the removal of these dead teeth.
We've integrated PCR testing of scar capsules into our practice which examines DNA fragments and this approach has yielded great results. Dr. Blodgett highlights the significance of understanding biofilm formation, particularly concerning teeth that no longer have a blood supply due to procedures like root canals. In an upcoming series based on 900 consecutive samples, we found that approximately 30 to 34% exhibited biofilm colonization, consisting of various microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and mycobacteria.
This microbial presence within the roots suggests a significant deviation from what's considered normal. Despite efforts to ensure quality testing by sending samples to a research-based laboratory specializing in PCR testing, there remain limitations in detecting microscopic processes through macroscopic examinations like CT scans, MRIs, or regular X-rays.
Furthermore, Dr. Blodgett emphasizes the interconnectedness of oral health with overall well-being, noting how disruptions in the oral microbiome can contribute to various systemic problems. Issues such as poor digestion, irregular bowel movements, and compromised nutrient absorption can stem from an imbalanced microbiome, impacting the body's ability to heal and function optimally.
Maintaining normal digestive processes is crucial for overall health, as it impacts our gut microbiome and downstream health outcomes. The intricate relationship between oral health and the gut microbiome is fascinating insofar as oral health isn't just about aesthetics or chewing food; it's integral to proper digestion and nutrient absorption. For instance, missing teeth can hinder the chewing process, affecting how well we break down food and utilize nutrients.
Addressing these issues involves considering the energetic and biological implications of dental treatments and materials used, as well as acknowledging potential sensitivities individuals may have to certain substances. By adopting a more holistic approach to oral care, we can better support both oral and systemic health.
Many individuals are transitioning towards a more natural and holistic approach to well-being, especially those who have undergone procedures like breast augmentation or reconstruction and are now considering removing breast implants. In my practice, I emphasize the importance of dietary adjustments, including cutting out gluten, dairy, and processed sugars, to support overall health and well-being.
These dietary changes are crucial as sugar, in particular, can be highly addictive and detrimental to health, impacting brain function and energy levels. That is why I always encourage clients to maintain a balanced fluid intake, neither overly acidic nor alkaline.
During the preparation phase, I focus on increasing protein intake while cutting out unhealthy carbohydrates and fats. Digestive enzymes are also provided to aid in protein digestion, preventing gut discomfort and fermentation. Although I don't have a specific diet regimen, I advocate for a higher protein intake tailored to individual needs, typically ranging from one and a half to two and a half grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This adjustment may require creative solutions for those struggling to meet their protein goals, such as incorporating amino acid supplements or protein-rich smoothies.
In terms of oral health, dietary adjustments and fluid intake can have a significant impact. For example, high-protein diets may lead to buildup on teeth surfaces, as observed during teeth cleaning sessions. While protein intake remains essential for optimal functioning, managing its effects on oral health requires attention to hygiene and possibly adjustments in dental care routines.
In surgeries, dentists often check for dental problems. If there's an issue, like infection or inflammation, the surgery might be postponed due to the risk of bacterial spread and potential complications like endocarditis. However, the sad truth is that despite longstanding awareness of these risks, they're not always taken seriously. This shows the need for greater emphasis on oral health in overall health management.
The standards set by organizations like the American Heart Association highlight the risks associated with microbial exposure in dental procedures. Surgeries involving heart valves, knee replacements, and hip joints pose risks because they share the same lymphatic drainage and blood supply pathways as the mouth. Despite this knowledge, the potential risks of microbial exposure from procedures like root canals are often overlooked. In fact, there are cases that show that addressing sources of toxicity, such as root canals, can lead to remarkable improvements in health, including relief from symptoms like cancer.
Moreover, while titanium implants have been hailed as effective tooth replacements, they can lead to peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and bone loss around the implant. This inflammation can have systemic effects, particularly in individuals already prone to inflammation, such as those with breast implants or joint issues. Despite the potential risks, there's often a lack of scrutiny within the dental profession regarding the broader systemic implications of these procedures.
The environment we live in exposes us to various toxins like phthalates from plastic water bottles, glyphosate from pesticide-laden foods, and heavy metals from contaminated groundwater. Each person's response to these exposures is unique, influenced by factors like their genetic makeup and lifestyle choices.
As a healthcare provider, listening to patients' personal anecdotes and understanding their history and exposures can provide valuable insights into their health challenges. Through attentive listening and assessment, healthcare professionals can better support patients in navigating their health journey.
Understanding the impact of toxins on our health, especially considering individual genetics and vulnerabilities, is crucial. Lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of sleep, and exposure to harmful substances can disrupt our body's detoxification processes, particularly affecting women due to their sensitive endocrine systems.
Improving diet and lifestyle habits can have a profound impact on overall health, including oral and gut health, empowering individuals to initiate positive changes for themselves and their families. Thankfully, you can take proactive steps such as using resources like the Environmental Working Group website (https://www.ewg.org/) to make informed choices about the products they use, including dental care items.
Addressing air quality is also crucial, especially in areas prone to mold and pollution, as poor air quality can have significant health implications. While filtered water is widely recognized as essential, filtered air is often overlooked but equally important for overall well-being. Understanding and improving air quality can have a profound impact on health, particularly for those sensitive to environmental factors like pollen and pollutants.
Implementing air filtration systems in dental offices has become increasingly important, especially in light of concerns about virus and bacteria transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted many dental offices to invest in quality air filters to significantly improve air quality and reduce exposure to harmful aerosols, leading to positive changes in workplace safety measures.
Moreover, addressing environmental factors like water quality and avoiding potentially harmful products can contribute to overall health and well-being. Considering individuals' sensitivities and using tests like Biocompatibility to determine the least reactive dental products can help minimize adverse reactions and ensure better outcomes for patients.
