Sit down with Amy for a solo episode in Entry 12, where she talks about what she's learned after researching more about anorexia. While her specific struggles in the past have revolved around bulimia, the eating disorders share a lot of commonalities. She talks about different types of eating disorders (from AFRID to OSFED to UFED), anorexia and binge eating disorder statistics and ways that she's helped strengthen her mind in recovery from bulimia that she feels can also be applied to those suffering from anorexia and binge eating disorder.

Sit down with Amy and Dr. Karl Nadolsky of the Docs Who Lift podcast to hear about Dr. Nadolsky's perspective on his recent posts about childhood trauma relating to subsequent disordered eating. Amy draws parallels to her own story with childhood trauma and the following years of struggling with bulimia. It's so important for clinicians and patients alike to have a level of awareness so you can open the grounds for discussion on how to heal from the inside out.

Have you ever felt like your eating disorder symptoms flared up significantly during PMS? Join Amy in Entry 9 as she discusses her experience with PMS and birth control and how that impacted her eating disorder. After getting her hormones measured only to discover her estrogen levels were abnormally high during PMS was she able to deduce that birth controls with high estrogen levels had extremely negative impacts on her. Once she took control of understanding her hormones as well as the phases of the menstrual cycle, she was able to come to a point of healing and give herself way more grace during that (sometimes insufferable) time of the month and she wants you to learn how to do the same!

In Entry 8 of The Eating Disorder Diaries, Amy sits down with Kristen Epling, her close friend and longtime roommate. They discuss their time as roommates and talk about what they would've done differently to handle what always seemed like the elephant in the room at the time: Amy's frequent episodes with bulimia.
Amy refers to an article titled "5 Tips for When A Roommate is in Eating Disorder Recovery" written by Samreen Khan for the blog BALANCE (linked here), as it draws close parallels to her conversation with Kristen. If you are looking for a way to extend an olive branch to your roommate, whether you're the one suffering or you're the one concerned about them, you can share this podcast as a way to break the ice. There are so many people out there that can relate to you.

In Entry 7 of The Eating Disorder Diaries, Amy sits down Chris Castellani of Barstool Sports. In December of 2022, Chris posted an article on Barstool titled "I'm Going to Rehab". In the article, Chris articulates his struggles with bulimia and alcohol addiction and let his followers know he was checking himself into rehab.
In the time that Chris posted that article to present day, he's absolutely changed his entire mindset. He's not only binge and purge-free as well as alcohol-free, but he's excelling in his career at Barstool and co-hosts several of their podcasts on a weekly basis.
Chris is raw and real and vulnerable in this episode, and leaves his followers with sound advice on what they can to do to start getting the help they need if they're in a bad spot. He's relatable, funny, and has one hell of a story to tell.

In Entry 6 of The Eating Disorder Diaries, Amy sits down with Lydia Rhino and Sabrina Scanga, two Program Directors at The Eating Disorder Foundation (EDF), a non-profit organization that started with a single support group devoted to the families and friends of those suffering from eating disorders. In the 20 years since it's been established, EDF has evolved into much more than a single support group. Amy attends a weekly eating disorder support group at EDF, and it quickly became a major lifeline and tool for her in her recovery journey.
Lydia and Sabrina talk about all of the services EDF offers and they discuss the structure of support groups for those who don’t know what to expect, both in-person and virtual (their virtual groups are available for anyone in the world to attend!). They also highlight the bills they are working to pass in Colorado to change the outdated practices we currently have with eating disorder treatment.
In a nutshell...eating disorder support groups can absolutely change your life and are available for anyone, anywhere!

In the fifth entry of The Eating Disorder Diaries, Amy discusses her experiences with nearly 2 decades of therapy and how that has helped her heal from her eating disorder. She talks about the cost of therapy, the frustration at not being able to find a therapist, and talks about some of the things she really has not jived with in sessions (like a therapist calling her manic or telling her that her PMS was just no big deal).
In the second half of the first segment, Amy drills into EMDR and what that's looked like for her in sessions. She talks about the 8 phases of EMDR and applies personal experiences to each phase in her own personal sessions and discusses how processing her trauma and sexual assault has helped her heal her ED.

Join us for the fourth entry of The Eating Disorder Diaries where Amy interviews her therapist, Cindy White. In this sit-down interview, Amy and Cindy discuss how critical therapy can be to managing a more healthy life for yourself to how healing your trauma can help you heal your eating disorder. Cindy gives insights into EMDR, CBT, among other treatment methods, and touches on how therapy can and is becoming more accessible to wider audiences. They discuss how to best "break up" with a therapist you're not getting along with, to what therapy looks like for first-timers, to how critical and useful it can be to have therapy goals to get the most out of your sessions.

In the third entry of The Eating Disorder Diaries, Amy interviews her parents Chris and Cindy Goeckel to get their perspectives on what it was like to have a child with an eating disorder. They get into the details on how they found out Amy had bulimia, what they did to get her help, and what they wish they would have known and done differently in retrospect. Spoiler alert: Eating disorders are serious and oftentimes treatment for young teenagers is not adequate, like it was in Amy's case. Chris talks about his own struggles with his self image and how that impacted his daughters, and Amy wraps up the show by reflecting on how important it was for her to be able to confide in her parents about her eating disorder and past trauma to get to the point of recovery that she's in today.
