The Empathy-Enabling Dilemma: How to Strike the Right Balance

Listen Later

Exploring the balance between empathy and boundaries: When empathy is properly practiced, it can be beneficial for both you and others. However, if empathy becomes unchecked and transforms into enabling, it leads to resentment and erodes your ability to empathize. The interplay of empathy and boundaries is crucial. Empathy and boundaries can be visualized as two friends on a bus seat, working harmoniously when combined, but causing issues when used separately.

This episode delves into the transformation of empathy into enabling and the subsequent strain it places on relationships. Empathy should involve understanding and communication, not fixing others' problems. True empathy soothes emotions and allows individuals to think and solve issues. Enabling, on the other hand, arises from forced helping and can lead to resentment and unhealthy dynamics.

The formula to distinguish between healthy helping and enabling is simple: if you feel good after helping, it's healthy; if you feel resentful, it's enabling. Enabling prevents growth as individuals become reliant on others. Setting healthy boundaries means communicating empathy while allowing individuals to address their own challenges. Long-lasting change arises when individuals work to better their situations with support, rather than relying on others to solve their problems.
