  • April 12, 2023 - Trying to Figure out the Baseball Team

After struggling a week ago, the Texas Longhorns returned to their winning ways on both diamonds. The baseball team used some come-from-behind dramatics to take care of business against the Kansas State Wildcats, before splitting a midweek series against the Texas State Bobcats. The softball team took themselves to Ames and returned to Austin after sweeping the Iowa State Cyclones to get back in the win column in Big 12 play.

Outside of the diamond, the women's golf team managed to put together an impressive weekend and came away with a Big 12 Match Play Championship, while men's tennis came back from Waco with a win over a ranked Baylor Bears squad.

  • April 5, 2023 - Director's Cupdates

With both basketball championships in the rearview mirror and the winter sports season waning, we bring back the man behind @Direct_Cupdates, Brett Wilkinson, to give us some insight into the latest standings. He also takes some time to help us predict whether the Texas Longhorns can pull off the three-peat and who the competition is for the top athletic department in the country.

We take some time to unpack two frustrating weekends on the diamond, with both baseball and softball struggling, before we Down the Forty and catch you up on the rest of the action on campus.

  • March 29, 2023 - Texas Goes Out Sad, but Has Its New Coach

After reaching their first Elite Eight for the first time since 2008, the Texas Longhorns were in a prime position to reach their first Final Four since TJ Ford was on campus, but a late-game meltdown - aided by the officials - sent the Miami Hurricanes to the next round.

Following the suspension and eventual firing of Chris Beard, the Longhorns looked shaky for a few games but Rodney Terry managed to right the ship and keep the team running. After leading Texas to one of its best seasons in 15 years, Chris Del Conte and the Texas administration made the call to drop the interim tag and make Terry the full-time head coach of the Longhorns. What can we take from this year's results to help us understand how Terry can lead the squad in the future and what he can do immediately to keep the momentum going?

We also whip around the rest of campus and check in with all of the other teams on campus, including the baseball team's nation-leading win streak and softball's pending top-10 matchup.

  • Longhorn Republic: March 23, 2023- Xavier Preview
The Texas Longhorns have the opportunity to do what just five teams before them have been able to do, reach the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Standing in their way, are the Xavier Musketeers, who bring one of the more effective offenses left in the tournament.
Xavier and head coach Sean Miller are coming off a close win in the opening round over Kennesaw State and a runaway victory over Pittsburgh, and are hoping to improve on the last year of Miller's last stint in Cincinnati with a trip to the Elite Eight. Miller leans heavily on a seven-man rotation weighted heavily toward the starters, with just five players boasting a double-digit scoring average for the year. Guard Souley Boum and forward Zach Freemantle lead the way for the Musketeers, averaging 16.5 and 15.2 points per game respectively, while Freemantle chips in 8.1 rebounds per game.
How do the Longhorns stack up against the Musketeers and what will it take for Texas to come away with a win?

  • Longhorn Republic: March 22, 2022 - Mixed weekend in the dance
The Texas Longhorns took the court in both the men's and women's NCAA Tournaments, with the women hoping to repeat and improve on last year's success, while the men hoped to make a deeper run than they have in 15 years.
While Rodney Terry and the men's team managed to knock off both their first two opponents, with a lopsided opening win over Colgate, before surviving a late-game push from the Penn State Nittany Lions to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2008. On the ladies' side, Texas cruised in its opening-round win but ran into a buzz saw against Louisville ad could not get things going to advance to the Sweet 16.
So what, if anything, do those two different outcomes mean for the teams in the immediate and long-term future for the teams.

  • Longhorn Republic: March 14, 2023 - Dancing Yet Again
After strong runs in the conference tournaments, with the men bringing home the title, both of the Texas Longhorns basketball teams find themselves preparing for tournament runs that set up for fireworks.
For the men, sitting as a No. 2 seed after winning the Big 12 tournament, getting out of the first two rounds for the first time since 2008 means a potential matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies, who drew the No. 7 seed in the same regional. If they can survive a tough matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Round of 64, then the stakes don't get any higher than a Lone Star Showdown for the rights to go to the second weekend of the tournament.
The ladies came up one game short of the conference title but landed the No. 4 seed and the rights to host the first two rounds of the regional at the Moody Center in Austin. However, their path to the Final Four shapes up to be a slugfest, having to face a tough Louisville squad even to make it out of the first weekend.

  • Longhorn Republic: March 8, 2023 - Cutting Down the Nets
With a dominant win over the Kansas State Wildcats, the Texas Longhorns' women's basketball team brought home their first regular-season title since the 2004 season -- just three seasons into the Vic Schaefer era.
For their troubles, the Longhorns brought home three of the major conference awards, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year, in addition to three all-conference selections and a spot on the freshman team. They also now have the advantage of being the top seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting them up for a run at the tournament title and potentially a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in a few weeks. What are the expectations for the Longhorns in the postseason and how deep can the run be?
We also dive in on the close finish for the men's team, unable to close the book on the regular season race, but positioning themselves on the opposite side of the bracket from both the Baylor Bears and the Kansas Jayhawks. That favorable positioning puts them in a prime position to make a run at another conference tournament title, in a season that could have been lost.

  • Longhorn Republic: March 1, 2023 - Basketball Can't Close
The Texas Longhorns, both the men and the women, had a chance to cement their place in the conference pecking order against the Baylor Bears and both were unable to get it done. So now, as the regular season comes to a close, both teams face must-win situations in order to keep their share of the conference title and bring the trophy back to Austin.
After a 3-1 week, the baseball team took the No. 1 LSU Tigers down to the wire, but couldn't put a run across the plate, while the softball team knocked off multiple ranked teams in their weekend tournament as they steadily climb up the rankings themselves. However, the swim teams broke the trend of struggling to finish the deal, with both the men and women brining home record-setting Big 12 Championships.

  • Longhorn Republic: February 21, 2023 - Baseball's Disastrous Start
After seeing double-digit departures through the MLB Draft and the transfer portal, the Texas Longhorns baseball team is clearly looking at a rebuilding year after making yet another trip to Omaha a year ago under head coach David Pierce.
After two close losses on Friday and Saturday, errors and defensive struggles led to a blowout at the hands of the Vanderbilt Commodores to close out the season and send the Longhorns back to Austin 0-3 to start the year. Were there any bright spots and what does Texas need to fix as they prepare for their home opener?
After getting the job done a week ago, both the men's and women's basketball teams are still battling atop the conference standings with the season rapidly approaching its close and pivotal conference matchups on the horizon.

  • Longhorn Republic: February 16, 2023 - Baseball Preview
The 2023 Texas Longhorns' baseball season is right around the corner and we dove in on the new-look lineup, with significant turnover for both the lineup and the coaching staff setting Texas up for a rebuilding year after yet another trip to Omaha. Head coach David Pierce is potentially looking at his toughest coaching job since his first year at Texas if he hopes to get the Longhorns back to the College World Series for the third consecutive year and the fourth time in his tenure at Texas.
On the hardwood, both the men's and the women's teams went 1-1 for the week and lost a bit of control in the Big 12 title race. While they still both sit atop their respective standings, they now are staring at a series of must-win games if they want to finish the season atop the conference standings and secure the top seed in the conference tournaments.
