  • Helen Petousis-Harris: One in 10 children miss out on vaccines
The number of people rejecting vaccines in some parts of the country is on the rise.
Recent data has shown one in 10 two year olds in some areas haven't been vaccinated against deadly diseases, because their parents opted to say no.
The country's on the brink of a vaccine roll-out for Covid-19, but it comes as the number deemed "vaccination willing" has fallen to 90 percent.
Vaccinologist Helen Petousis-Harris told Mike Yardley we're on a slippery slope.
"We were actually sitting pretty pretty at 1994. We've been taking a wee dive in recent years."
She says those who say no are selfish.
"If you decline this, it's not just about your own health or the health of your family, but also that of others."
The lowest rates of decline are in Canterbury and Auckland.

  • Rod Carr: Climate Change Commission calls for sweeping changes to reach targets
New Zealand must ban the import of petrol and diesel cars by 2032 in order to reach its climate change targets and decarbonise the economy, new advice recommends.
And Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Government "will not hold back" on taking action and committed to setting more ambitious emissions commitments by the end of the year.
She called the Climate Change Commission's blueprint for New Zealand to be carbon neutral by 2050 "achievable and affordable".
One of the key recommendations was to ban the import of fossil-fuelled vehicles within 14 years and half of all new cars and motorbikes need to be electric by 2027.
"Achieving this phase out is ambitious, but achievable with strong supporting government action. This timeframe is consistent with the phase out dates being set by a growing number of countries," said the report.
The commission recommended implementing a feebate or subsidy for electric vehicles - a policy which was attempted last term but was shut down by New Zealand First.
That scheme would have made some cleaner cars $8000 cheaper and other dirtier cars $3000 more expensive.
The commission also said New Zealanders needed to walk, cycle and catch public transport more and proposed lowering bus, train and ferry fares for some groups.
Commission Chair Rod Carr told Mike Yardley even if this happens, the majority of cars in 2035 will still have internal combustion engines.
"We don't have the option of not getting started, and we don't have the option of getting started slowly. We had those options 30 years and we didn't get on with it."
Ardern said policies would need to consider barriers some Kiwis have to swapping to an electric vehicle such as only having on-street parking.
She also committed to working to get consensus in the House and bring along the private sector so it could have certainty that commitments wouldn't change under different governments.
Ardern called meeting the emissions targets one of the "most significant" pieces of work her Government would undertake.
The decisions and actions over the next five years will be "crucial to our success" and committed to improving New Zealand's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in order to meet our obligations under the Paris Agreement this year.
Speeding up the response to climate change would reduce emissions faster and help New Zealand be at the front of the curve of climate action which presented opportunities, such as owning the rights to new technologies, Ardern said.
Climate Change Minister James Shaw said if New Zealand rose to the challenge of climate change, the opportunity was "huge" because it would create new jobs and encourage innovation.
Shaw said New Zealand needed to focus on net emissions reductions because we couldn't "grow our way" out of climate change by planting trees.
"We have to choose right now. Previous generations didn't have the technology but we do. Future generations won't have the chance - it will be too late."
Shaw said he'd never been more confident that a clean-tech and high value economy that worked for everyone was within reach.
The commission is also calling for better engagement with New Zealanders to build awareness.
Chair Rod Carr says it's all very well talking about behaviour changes.
"You need to have the enabling infrastructure and regulations for that, you can't just simply browbeat people into doing things that they are unable to do in the context, not matter how much they might wish to."
National's Climate Change spokesman Stuart Smith said the Government must test every policy it makes in response to the commission's advice.
"New Zealand needs an effective plan that is based on practical, sensible solutions. We can't afford to waste money on policies that won't make a genuine dent in emissions.
"The Government must have a reliable idea of how many tonnes of greenhouse gases a...

  • Steve Price: Perth plunged into lockdown after confirmed case in community
Perth has been plunged into a five-day lockdown after a confirmed case of Covid-19 went to various locations the community.
WA Premier Mark McGowan held an emergency press conference on Sunday afternoon, saying a male security guard aged in his 20s had been working at Sheraton Four Points in the CBD where there were four active cases, including two of the UK variant and one of the South African mutant strain.
He had tested negative on January 15, 17 and 23 but developed symptoms on Thursday.
"Exactly how the infection was acquired remains under investigation," McGowan said.
The lockdown applies to the Perth, Peel and South West regions and begins at 6pm WST on Sunday, running until 6pm on Friday.
"People in the Perth, Peel and South West regions need to stay inside their region for the next five days, unless for an essential reason," he said.
"We are strongly encouraging that everyone in this area who is from another WA region, stay here.
"Do not travel further outside of this area until the lockdown is over.
"If you do need to travel outside the region you are in now, that can only occur if you need to return to your place of residence."
Pubs, bars and clubs, gyms, indoor sporting venues, playgrounds, skate parks, outdoor recreational facilities, places of worship, libraries and the Crown casino are among venues that must close.
Restaurants and cafes can provide takeaway service only and just 10 people can attend funerals.
    Weddings are cancelled.
No visitors are permitted to homes unless caring for someone vulnerable or in an emergency and no visitors will be allowed into aged care homes and hospitals unless there are exceptional circumstances.
School was due to start on Monday but that has now been put on hold.

  • Richard Arnold: South African variant and Trump loses impeachment lawyers
Former President Donald Trump has parted ways with his lead impeachment lawyers just over a week before his Senate trial is set to begin, two people familiar with the situation said Saturday.
Butch Bowers and Deborah Barbier, both South Carolina lawyers, are no longer with Trump's defense team. One of the people described the parting as a "mutual decision" that reflected a difference of opinion on the direction of the case. Both insisted on anonymity to discuss private conversations.
One said new additions to the legal team were expected to be announced in a day or two.
The upheaval injects fresh uncertainty into the makeup and strategy of Trump's defense team as he prepares to face charges that he incited the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. However, all but five Senate Republicans this week voted in favor of an effort to dismiss the trial before it even started, making clear a conviction of the former president is unlikely regardless of his defense team.
Greg Harris and Johnny Gasser, two former federal prosecutors from South Carolina, are also off the team, one of the people said.
According to a different person with knowledge of the legal hires, Bowers and Barbier left the team because Trump wanted them to use a defense that relied on allegations of election fraud, and the lawyers were not willing to do so. The person was not authorized to speak publicly about the situation and requested anonymity.
Trump has struggled to find attorneys willing to defend him after becoming the first president in history to be impeached twice. He is set to stand trial the week of Feb. 8 on a charge that he incited his supporters to storm Congress before President Joe Biden's inauguration in an attempt to halt the peaceful transition of power.
After numerous attorneys who defended him previously declined to take on the case, Trump was introduced to Bowers by one of his closest allies in the Senate, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Bowers, a familiar figure in Republican legal circles, had years of experience representing elected officials and political candidates, including then-South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford against a failed impeachment effort that morphed into an ethics probe.
Bowers and Barbier did not immediately return messages seeking comment Saturday evening.
Republicans and Trump aides have made clear that they intend to make a simple argument in the trial: Trump's trial is unconstitutional because he is no longer in office.
While Republicans in Washington had seemed eager to part ways with Trump after the deadly events of Jan. 6, they have since eased off of their criticism, weary of angering the former president's loyal voter base.
CNN was first to report the departure of the lawyers.

  • Enda Brady: 100-year-old UK fundraising hero Captain Tom Moore hospitalised with Covid-19
Tom Moore, the World War II veteran who raised millions for a British charity supporting the UK's National Health Service by walking laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, has been hospitalized with Covid-19 and pneumonia, his daughter Hannah said on Twitter Sunday.
Moore became a national celebrity and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in July after raising nearly £33 million ($40 million at the time).
Moore was taken to a hospital on Sunday because of breathing problems after being treated for pneumonia for the last few weeks, his daughter said, adding that he was not in intensive care.
"The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible," she said.
Moore was accompanied to the knighting ceremony in July by his daughter, son-in-law Colin Ingram, grandson Benji and graddaughter Georgia, according to PA Media.
"I could never have imagined this would happen to me. It is such a huge honour and I am very much looking forward to meeting Her Majesty The Queen," he said at the time. "It is going to be the most special of days for me."
"If I kneel down I'll never get up again," he added as he left his home for Windsor Castle.
Moore, who rose to the rank of captain during his military career, was promoted to honorary colonel in recognition of his efforts.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson personally recommended to the Queen that Moore should be exceptionally honored, according to a Downing Street press release at the time.
"Colonel Tom's fantastic fundraising broke records, inspired the whole country and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus," Johnson said in the release.

  • Shay Peters: Survey finds Kiwis are feeling optimistic and secure in their jobs
Job security ranks a low fifth for Kiwi workers as many of them feel upbeat about their roles.
Recruitment firm Robert Walters' salary survey shows employees value the culture of their organisation above anything else - despite the shadow of Covid 19 on their lives.
Country Manager Shay Peters told Mike Hosking they were surprised that employees aren't too concerned about job security.
"This shows the optimism coming through - and there's still a skill shortage of professionals."
Peters says the overall tone of workers about the job market is optimistic.

  • Peter Montgomery: All you need to know ahead of the Prada Cup semifinal
All you need to know ahead of the Prada Cup semifinal.
The official competition to select the Challenger to face Team New Zealand in the America's Cup match has reached its knockout stage as Luna Rossa take on American Magic in the Prada Cup semifinal.
With the round robins done and dusted, the two remaining challengers face off in a best of seven (first to four wins) race to determine who will take on Ineos Team UK, who booked their place in the Prada Cup final by being the top team in the round robins.
The losing semifinalist will see their America's Cup dream end.
The main story coming into the semis will be the state of American Magic's AC75, which underwent severe repairs after its dramatic capsize in the first week of Prada Cup racing.
The Americans will be a relatively unknown prospect, having only a few days of practice time after re-launching Patriot 2.0 on Wednesday.
Terry Hutchinson's crew were the top challenger in the World Series event in December and were the only team to beat the defenders Team NZ.
However, it was a different story in the Prada Cup round robins where American Magic were winless, including two losses to Luna Rossa - suffering a capsize in the second race to put them out of the water for nine days.
The Americans will be hopeful of regaining the speed they saw right before their capsize, where they were one leg away from a win before tragedy struck.

Meanwhile, Luna Rossa have had a relatively up and down campaign thus far.
They looked like they could've beaten the British in the final round robin race last weekend but made a few costly errors.
Ultimately, it always comes down to speed and which team has made the right improvements to their boats.
The battle between Luna Rossa's dual helsmen and American Magic's Dean Barker will also be fascinating, especially during the race starts.
    Schedule
There are two races scheduled each day on Friday, Saturday and Saturday. The first team to claim four wins will move on to the final. If the score is tied at 3-3 after the weekend, then the teams will have a break on Monday and return on Tuesday for the seventh and final race of the semifinal. The first race each day will kickoff around 3.15pm.
    Odds
    Prada Cup semifinal series winner:
    Luna Rossa - $1.80American Magic - $1.90
