  • Property: Are flat-pack houses the future?
Are flat-pack houses the solution to the housing crisis?
News that Bunnings Trade has sold more than 50 flat-pack homes in New Zealand in the last year, (two-bedroom 60sq m models selling from $69,000) went viral last week.
The business is marketing its flat-pack homes under a brand it owns, Clever Living Co., advertised as "homes that move to you."
A Bunnings spokesperson at the chain's Melbourne headquarters said: "Locations where Clever Living Co. homes have been built are in Northland, Auckland, the Waikato, Taranaki, exported to Rarotonga, Palmerston North, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Wellington, Central Otago, central South Island, Otago."
So will this become a new trend? If so, just how viable are these properties? Property commentator Alistair Holm joined The Weekend Collective to discuss this and all the other property stories from the week.

  • Property: Should KiwiBuild be scrapped?
What does the future hold for KiwiBuild?
Housing Minister Phil Twyford will no longer guarantee that KiwiBuild will be made up of 100,000 affordable homes, but won't say whether that target has been scrapped either.
The Government's flagship housing policy is being "recalibrated" after an admission this year that it was unlikely to meet its first target of 1000 affordable homes built by July 1 2019. Just 80 have been built so far.
When the scheme was put under review, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Twyford both were emphatic that the target of building 100,000 affordable homes over 10 years would remain.
But is it still achievable? And if not, should the programme still be promoted?
CEO of the Property Council Leonie Freeman joined the Weekend Collective to discuss the Government scheme.

  • Property: How has the foreign buyer ban affected the property market?
The Government's foreign buyer ban has seen a significant drop in home ownership by overseas residents, new Statistics New Zealand data shows.
House sales to overseas buyers dropped 81 per cent in the March quarter compared to the same time last year.
Stats NZ property statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said the law changes late last year that introduced restrictions for overseas buyers played a big part in this drop.
Property commentator Ashley Church joined the Weekend Collective to this the effect the ban has had, if anything, on house affordability, and if the ban was worthwhile at all.

  • Alistair Helm: Will no CGT tax punish tenants and first home buyers?
The Government has abandoned plans to introduce any form of Capital Gains Tax.
What will happen to the market now? Will it come bouncing back now the uncertainty of the tax has gone, or will sluggish property prices continue for the foreseeable future?
Property Commentator and Real Estate agent Alistair Helm joined The One Roof Radio Show on The Weekend Collective to share his expert opinion on the issue.

  • Ashley Church: Do Kiwis use garages for their cars? (1)
In the past motorists would protect their cars from the elements and the cold by keeping them snug in the garage.
But modern cars are less prone to rust and are more likely to fire up first time – even on a frosty morning - when left outside in the driveway or in the street, say experts.
Property Commentator Ashley Church joined The One Roof Radio Show on The Weekend Collective to discuss the issue!

The number of Auckland homeowners selling their properties for less than they paid for them has doubled over the past year.
Is this a simple case of people buying houses they can’t afford?
Mortgage adviser Sara Hartigan joins The One Roof Radio Show on the Weekend Collective to discuss the issue.

  • Leonie Freeman: Investing in non-residential property
We are being told that commercial property remains a viable alternative to residential property investments, with some commercial properties selling at prices that are comparable with many residential properties.
Also, commercial units generally provide better rental returns than their residential counterparts.
Leonie Freeman, CEO of the Property Council, joins The One Roof Radio Show on The Weekend Collective to share her expert advice on whether you should be looking to invest in non-residential property
