Will raising interest rates make inflation worse? The OCR won’t fix an oil shock. Central banks, including the RBNZ, can create too much currency and crush demand, but they can’t print oil. When energy prices jump and stay high, raising rates mostly hits mortgage holders and businesses who use debt to grow - is it really wise to squeeze the part of the economy responsible for growth?

I have sat across from hundreds of people with an inheritance coming, and almost always they make one of two mistakes. The less common one is when people take their foot off the gas - The knowledge of money coming justifies no budget, no discipline, no plan. Black holes for intergenerational wealth.

The second mistake is worse, and I think it often comes from a decent instinct. People live like the money is never going to come. They play it safe.

The Reserve Bank of NZ has hiked the OCR (official cash rate) twice off the lows and says the recovery has “most likely resumed, but remains uneven.” Headline inflation is 4.1% because of fuel, but if you take that out, you’re at 2.9% (inside the target band). I think the question is simple: can the Kiwi economy handle the hikes, or do we get a forced cut and a longer grind? My guest is Jarrod Kerr, chief economist at Kiwibank.
