  • 56. Re-wire your brain for chronic symptom recovery by changing your mind: interview w/Dr. Tori Olds

START HERE! https://thesteadycoach.com/free-course I walk you through many of the principles discussed in this interview in my structured 12 week program. You also get group coaching, in which we use many of the methods discussed. https://thesteadycoach.com/steady-start

This interview is SO useful for ANYONE who is here with chronic neural circuit symptoms - PPPD, MdDS, vestibular migraine, tinnitus, hyperacusis, pain, chronic fatigue and any other medically unexplained chronic dizziness or other symptoms. You're here on my channel to learn how to change your brain, and in this interview, we talk about the science behind HOW to do it and WHY the techniques we talk about on this channel work. Neuroplasticity is a buzzword nowadays that's so overused, it's often meaningless. This interview covers a specific, science-supported approach to neuroplasticity for transformative change called memory reconsolidation.

In the interview, Dr. Tori Olds, psychologist and educator, explains the nuts and bolts of memory reconsolidation, which is the process that explains how the brain unlearns old strategies, symptoms, beliefs and feelings, and learns new ones. We explore how this is applicable to neural circuit dizziness and other symptoms, and we discuss what you can do NOW to leverage this process for your own recovery.

Dr. Tori Olds, PhD, is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Austin, Texas. She is the co-founder of Deep Eddy Psychotherapy, one of the largest training and counseling centers in Texas, with a staff of 200. She specializes in the integration of experiential approaches to therapy and teaches numerous weekly training groups on this topic, including two with Bruce Ecker, PHD. She has a number of online courses, and a youtube channel where she creates content aimed at demystifying the healing journey.

Learn about the hallmark inconsistencies in her symptoms, the benefit of exercise and how her history with OCD played a role. We also get to hear about how she worked with her thoughts and emotions in her recovery work. Today Amie is 90% recovered and easily handle the little symptoms occasionally appearing. Also, she's learned about the emotional connection to her symptoms and how to handle that.

  • 54. A mindbody perspective on hormone transitions, menopause & chronic symptoms w/Lorraine Faehndrich

This is a gem of a conversation with Lorraine Faehndrich, NBC-HWC, who specializes in working with women experiencing pelvic pain, many of whom are going through hormonal transitions. It is well known that women are more vulnerable to vestibular disorders and chronic pain than men, and current research and my experience suggest that this vulnerability is more pronounced during times of hormonal transitions like post-partum, pre-menstrual, perimenopausal and menopausal periods. In this interview, we discuss why we must look at this phenomenon through a biopsychosocial lens that takes into account the stress, emotional strain and responsibilities that women are facing during these times. You are NOT just a bag of estrogen, and treating symptoms should always take into account the whole person. We also spend some time delving into Lorraine's approach with clients and the important of pleasure and enjoyment in recovery.

  • 50. Austin's Success Story: recovery from BPPV, vertigo, visual symptoms derealization & more with OCD

It's a pleasure to share Austin's success story with you today! Austin always had a fear of dizziness as well as OCD and anxiety, so it was his nightmare when he first experienced dizziness symptoms. Everything started May 2023 with a bout of BPPV that quickly morphed into dizziness, derealization, visual sway, chronic pain and more. Despite starting an SSRI, things progressively got worse until he was basically housebound in November 2023. Thankfully, at that point he decided there was nothing wrong him and he started desensitizing himself to his symptoms. In this interview, he describes some of the tools he used and how he's doing today.

Most notably, Austin experienced spinning vertigo as one of his symptoms. He even describes being able to bring it on just by focusing on it and feeling anxious! Spinning vertigo is excluded from the diagnostic definition of PPPD so many people who have it fear that they don't have a neural circuit problem, but as Austin demonstrates, it absolutely can be a neural circuit symptom. Vestibular and medical testing can rule out a structural problem that is causing it.
