Most of us have experienced grief, whether from the death of a loved one or pet, a terminal or life-changing diagnosis for you or someone you love, or even a difficult breakup or divorce.
Death is still the number one fear that humans have so there can be a lot of emotions around it. There’s a feeling of unknown for most people which can cause more fear. But even more painful can be trying to visualize your life without that person in it.
Turns out, it takes a long time for our brains to really internalize that someone is gone. So today we’re learning about what happens to our brains on grief. Our guest is Mary-Frances O'Connor. is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, where she directs the Grief, Loss, and Social Stress (GLASS) Lab in investigating the effects of grief on the brain and the body. She’s also the author of The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss.
