  • #63: Is It Okay To Have a Relationship With My Ex In-Laws, Even If My Ex Hates It?

"Is it ok to maintain a relationship with you ex-in-laws after you marriage ends? Even if it upsets your ex?

My husband and I were recently married and are in the midst of working through the challenges that come with blending our families. On my husbands side, his ex-wife has completely severed all ties with her family and does not want the kids see her family. Throughout their divorce, my husband maintained his relationships with his in-laws and does his best to make sure the kids can stay connected to their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins by inviting them over on special occasions or allowing the grandparents to visit with them on our time. Being widowed myself, I understand the importance of keeping a relationship with my late in-laws because I know my children will only be able to maintain those relationships through me. So, both my husband and I value the importance of extended family and make the extra efforts because we want our kids to know that they can count on their family to always be there for them.

However, this has caused a lot of contention for his kids and their mom because she becomes upset with them for seeing her family and hates that my husband still keeps in contact with them. It's gotten to the point where her family has begun to question if they should let go of their relationships with the kids for fear that it's doing more harm than good. They hate that they're the reason the kids get in trouble. They also worry it's only driving her farther away from ever reconnecting with them.

My husband and I are saddened by this and aren't sure how to move forward. Do we continue to maintain these relationships for the kids (because they love and miss the in-laws!), or are we doing more harm than good by putting the kids in these contentious situations with their mom?"

  • #58: How Do You Know If You're Dealing With Sex Addiction/Porn Addiction?

"I absolutely love your podcast! It truly is free therapy for me. Y’all make me laugh and cry and I learn so much from listening. I have gone back to the first podcast and am listening to every single one. I’m currently on August 2018, but I don’t want to skip any because I know I’ll miss something important. My question is what constitutes a sex addict or porn addiction? I discovered my husband’s porn use about 6 months ago. This was after I discovered an affair a year ago. He continues to use porn and continues to lie about it. I cannot trust him. I want my marriage to work, but more importantly, I want him to seek help and get better. We’ve had 2 sessions of therapy after his affair, but nothing since. I continue praying about this and I am growing closer to God. He is the only one who can help me get through this. Thanks for your expertise and your very informative podcast. I will continue listening."

  • #55: Video-Gaming is Causing Conflict in My Marriage... What Now?

"I am triggered by my husband’s video gaming. He denies it’s an addiction, yet in our 15 years of marriage, unless he’s totally abstinent he’s been unable to control it. I see that it creates many of the same effects that his porn addiction did on our marriage with the lack of connection, empathy, consideration, and fulfilling of responsibilities. It also perpetuates the same character defects in him, mainly avoidance of discomfort, the inability to self-regulate, lack of integrity, and it hinders emotional development and productivity. He asserts that it is a part of who he is and that it would be a form of self-betrayal if he gave them up at my insistence, and yet I feel like when he chooses to over-indulge in them, drags the kids into it and breaks house rules and limits we’ve agreed on -undermining my authority as a parent and setting a bad example for them, when he hides the fact that he’s playing them Instead of working, or even openly declares that he will not stop playing them despite my pleadings -despite my expressing how his playing video games undermines my trust and love and respect for him... when he chooses video games over me, I end up feeling betrayed all over again. He says my reaction to his gaming is the problem and drives his desire to play. He insists that the only way to develop a healthy relationship with video games is to not feel restricted or ashamed and then he’ll automatically only want them in healthy amounts... which logically makes sense, but we vastly disagree on our definition of what’s a “healthy amount” of video games. I just don’t see why he has to have a relationship with them at all when they’re so unnecessary and when it causes so much conflict in our marriage and distress for me. Am I wrong to be so distressed? Is it just my problem with them that’s causing the problem like he says? Is his assertion that it’s just part of who he is a valid argument? What is a healthy amount of video games for an addict? And lastly is it unfair of me to set boundaries around his video gaming and what would a good boundary look like?"
