  • 每日英語跟讀 Ep.930: About SKorea- 正常學校生活的希望破滅與執政黨支持率下跌
每日英語跟讀 Ep.930: About SKorea- Hopes dashed for ’normal’ school life

Seeing a stabilizing trend of new novel coronavirus cases in the past few months, many students, teachers and parents had hoped the coming second semester of the school year would be different. The first semester had been punctuated with weeks of closures followed by weeks of online-only classes and a mix of online and offline formats.
    看到(南韓)過去幾個月新型冠狀病毒新增病例呈穩定趨勢,許多學生、教師和家長原本希望,學校即將到來的第2學期將有所不同。第1學期不時遭為期數週的閉校打斷,緊接著就是數週僅採線上授課,以及虛實融合授課模式。
But with COVID-19 cases suddenly surging in the capital region, it looks like online classes will be the norm again in the coming new semester. The start of the fall semester differs across cities and provinces, ranging from mid-August to early September.
    但隨著新型冠狀病毒病的病例在首都地區突然激增,看來線上課程在即將到來的新學期又會是常態。秋季學期的開學時間,在各市與道有所不同,從8月中到9月初間不等。
According to government data, a total of 150 students and 30 school employees have been infected with the coronavirus since May 20.
    根據政府資料,自5月20日以來,共150名學生及30名學校員工已染上該冠狀病毒。

Ruling party struggles with sinking approval rating 支持率下跌 執政黨舉步維艱

The approval rating for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea(DPK)has continued on a downward spiral as a result of botched real estate policies and the autocratic passage of controversial bills, a survey showed, Thursday.
    週四一份調查顯示,(南韓)執政的共同民主黨支持率,已持續呈螺旋式下降。原因是糟糕的房地產政策及專橫地通過有爭議的法案。
In the poll of 1,510 adults conducted by Realmeter from Monday to Wednesday, 35.6 percent said they support the DPK, while 34.8 percent expressed support for the United Future Party(UFP).
    在南韓民調機構Realmeter自週一至週三、針對1510名成人所做的民調中,35.6%表示,他們支持共同民主黨,而有34.8%表達對(最大在野黨)未來統合黨的支持。
The gap between approval ratings of the parties was the smallest since the UFP was launched in February.
    兩黨這次的支持率差距,創下未來統合黨自2月成立以來的最小紀錄。

  • 文法跟讀 In-Tense Ep.060: Intransitive Verb 不及物動詞
Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I am your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 60.

Well guys, we are busy with verbs. We are busy with action verbs and in the last episode we did transitive verbs, and those are verbs that have an object, a direct object. “The dog ate the bone.” But a lot of times we don't have an object. We have a subject, the dog, “The dog ate.” There is no object, so that is an intransitive verb. “The dog ate.” It's a complete sentence. What did the dog eat? We don't know. We don't care. We just say that the dog ate. “Yes, the dog ate.” We don't ask why there's no object. So, we have a dog which is a noun and the subject and it ate, and that is an intransitive verb, easy as that.

Again, I will reiterate this every episode, please don't worry about this, as long as you know that this is a verb, we are fine. But for those of you are interested, if you ever hear transitive and intransitive, now you know a transitive verb has an object. “The dog ate the ball.” And an intransitive sentence, “The dog ate.” And we use them for things like, “Who called?” And you answer, “Peter called.” OK, so we use them on a daily basis, again, don't worry about it. We will do some examples and if you are really interested you can Google Intransitive Verbs, and if you look you will find lists of them of the most common ones. OK, so let's get started with our examples.

Can he swim? Yes, he can swim.
Can he swim? No, he cannot swim well.

There you go guys! Intransitive verbs, some examples. Again, just keep practising the questions and the answers. Don't panic about what they are specifically, as long as you can recognise them as verbs, we are fine. Great, so that is that for action verbs. I will catch you in the next episode, bye, bye!

  • 每日英語跟讀 Ep.929: Top 22歲英國超模轉型變電影大咖
每日英語跟讀 Ep.929: Top Model’s Priorities Have Shifted to Acting

“There was a point in my life where I literally lived through a camera.”
    「曾經有一刻,我真的是在忍受鏡頭。」
Cara Delevingne, a confident tangle of lanky limbs and messy hair, tattoos and ripped black jeans, arched her eyebrows and popped her eyes wide as she excitedly described her habit of filming her meteoric, globe-trotting rise. “Watching Lars Ulrich play a Metallica show from behind the drum kit! Or doing tequila shots with Whitney Houston just before she died! When I get older, I’m going to go through that footage and have the best time, because I probably won’t remember much of it.”
Now, the unfiltered Ms. Delevingne, at 22 the reigning “It” Brit supermodel, is planting her Union Jack in Hollywood with a much-coveted part in “Paper Towns,” the second film based on a novel by John Green, whose “The Fault in Our Stars“ became a $300 million hit worldwide.
    現在,作風直率、特立獨行的22歲英國超模迪樂芬妮,以英國人身分插旗好萊塢,在電影「紙上城市」出演一個各方垂涎的角色。紙上城市是根據美國小說家約翰.葛林的小說拍攝的第二部電影,第一部「生命中的美好缺憾」全球大賣,創下3億美元票房。
You don’t have to be one of Ms. Delevingne’s more than 15 million Instagram followers to see why she was a good fit for the role of the rebellious teenager Margo Roth Spiegelman. In “Paper Towns,” the character is described by her neighborhood admirer as “arguably the most gorgeous creature God had ever created,” a girl “whose life is a series of unbelievably epic adventures.” Ms. Delevingne has been a professionally gorgeous model for Burberry and other brands, an angel for Victoria’s Secret, and the windswept cover girl of the July issue of Vogue.
Already, the Variety critic Justin Chang has raved that Ms. Delevingne is “the real find of the film” and that “on the evidence of her work here, this striking actress is here to stay.”
    「綜藝」雜誌影評人賈斯汀.張盛讚她是「這部片的新秀,從她出眾的表現看來,她已經被電影圈認可」。
Margo’s creator, John Green, wrote via email that the actress “captured the disconnect” between the image that Quentin, the neighbor played by Nat Wolff, had of Margo and the image she had of herself. “She understands better than anyone I’ve ever known what it’s like to have people look at you and think they know you when in fact almost no one is actually listening to you,” he said.
    創造瑪戈這個角色的葛林在電郵上說,迪樂芬妮「捕捉到」納特沃爾夫飾演的鄰居昆汀對瑪戈的印象與瑪戈對自己的認知「不一致的地方」。葛林說:「迪樂芬妮比我所知的任何人都懂,人們看著你、以為了解你,但事實上幾乎沒人傾聽你,會是什麼樣子。」
Ms. Delevingne was raised in a privileged but hardly picture-perfect family in London. Joan Collins is her godmother. Her father, Charles, is a successful real estate developer. Her mother, Pandora, is working on a memoir about her long-term heroin addiction.
    迪樂芬妮成長在倫敦一個優渥卻不完美的家庭。英國知名演員瓊.考琳絲是她的教母。父親查爾斯是成功的房地產開發商。母親潘朵拉正在寫回憶錄回顧長年的海洛因癮。
“I went through so much therapy as a kid, and I hated it, and because you get so used to saying the same thing over and over again, it just becomes a story,” she said, adding later: “I always wanted to act, from when I was 4 years old. When I was younger, I hated myself, so I preferred being other people.”
    她說:「我小時候做過很多治療,很討厭治療,當你習慣把同一件事說很多遍,這件事就變成故事。從我四歲起,我就想演戲。我更小的時候,痛恨自己,想當別人。」
Ms. Delevingne made her modeling debut in a Vogue Italia shoot at the age of 10 in 2003, signed with the prestigious Storm Model Management in 2009 and took home Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2012 and 2014.
    迪樂芬妮2003年10歲時在模特兒圈出道,為義大利Vogue雜誌拍照。2009年她與頗負盛名的風暴國際模特兒經紀公司簽約,並在2012和2014年拿下「英國時尚大獎」年度最佳模特兒獎。
“Modeling was never a dream of mine,” Ms. Delevingne said.
    她說:「當模特兒從來就不是我的夢想。」
In her first screen role, as a princess in “Anna Karenina” (2012), Ms. Delevingne said she spent hours getting into hair and makeup for the shot. “Then the director comes up and says: ‘Stop modeling. And stop trying to look pretty.’ ”
    她第一個電影角色是在2012年「安娜卡列妮娜」片中演個公主。她說,當時她花好幾小時做髮妝造型準備入鏡,「後來導演來了,他說:『別再當模特兒了。還有,別再一心讓外表美麗。』」
Ms. Delevingne had supporting roles in “London Fields,” “Pan,” “The Face of an Angel,” “Tulip Fever” and “Kids in Love.” She has booked her next lead in Luc Besson’s big-budget science-fiction “Valerian” and has recently been playing the supervillain Enchantress in David Ayer’s DC Comics 2016 tent pole “Suicide Squad.”
    迪樂芬妮曾在「倫敦戰場」、「潘恩:航向夢幻島Pan」、「天使謀殺疑雲」、「狂熱鬱金香」與「熱戀中的孩童」擔任配角。她已簽約,下次出演主角是在盧貝松的大成本科幻電影「Valerian」。最近在導演大衛艾亞改編自DC漫畫的2016年主打大片「自殺突擊隊」飾演超級大反派「墮落女巫」。
Ms. Delevingne formalized her move away from fashion by parting ways with Storm Model Management. She will selectively continue to model. “I love saying no,” she said. “Before, I didn’t, and it took a huge toll on my health.”
    迪樂芬妮已與風暴國際解約,正式告別時尚圈。她說,她還是會選擇性地當模特兒,「我喜歡說不,以前我不會說,對我的健康傷害很大。」
Ms. Delevingne said she hoped to follow in the footsteps of Charlize Theron, who also began her career as a model. “People can put you in whatever box: model, whatever,” she said. “But if I just keep going and actually do it well, which I hope I can, then I hope people will give me more movies – and I’ll win an Oscar!”
    她說,希望追隨莎莉賽隆的腳步,從模特兒轉戰大銀幕,「人們可以把你塞進各種框框,不管是模特兒還是任何角色。不過,只要我繼續朝演員之路前進,而且如我所希望的做得很好,我期待人們會給我更多拍片機會,而我會拿下奧斯卡獎!」
With that, Ms. Delevingne smiled serenely. Then she leaned back, rolled her eyes, and stuck out her tongue.
    說完,她平靜地微笑起來,背部往後一靠,轉動眼珠,吐出了舌頭。

  • 每日英語跟讀 Ep.927: 網路違法下載難以遏止
每日英語跟讀 Ep.927: In Culture of Access, a Frustrating Pursuit of Bootleggers

On June 30, 2010, Hana Beshara woke to a sharp rapping on the door of her condo in New Jersey.
    2010年6月30日,哈娜.貝夏拉被她位於新澤西州的公寓大門急叩聲吵醒。
“ I’m thinking it’s, like, Amazon,” she said.
    她說:「我以為那是亞馬遜(購物網站送貨)。」
It wasn’t a delivery. It was a team of armed federal agents who went through her belongings, confiscating her TV, computers and cellphones — anything with a hard drive.
    不是送貨,而是一批武裝聯邦幹員。他們搜索她的全部私人物品,查扣她的電視、電腦與手機;任何配備硬碟的物品。
Ms. Beshara was a founder of a site called NinjaVideo, at the time one of the most popular places online to illegally stream and download TV shows and movies. At its peak, the site attracted 2.6 million visitors a day and had around 60,000 registered members. The site made watching illegal downloads almost as simple as flipping on the TV. Few who used it were surprised when it was shuttered.
    貝夏拉是「忍者視訊」網站的創辦人之一。它當時是提供違法串流與下載電視節目、電影的最紅網站之一。鼎盛期間,它一天吸引260萬人次的網友,登記會員約6萬人。它使收看非法下載內容就和打開電視一樣簡單。當局將它關閉時,大多數人並不意外。
To the government, Ms. Beshara was a thief . The Motion Picture Association of America alerted the federal government to NinjaVideo and nine other movie-streaming sites, and they all went dark at the same time. The scale of the operation carried out by several agencies was meant to send a warning that the government wasn’t ignoring the freewheeling world of illegal online streaming and downloading.
    在美國政府的眼中,貝夏拉是小偷。美國電影協會曾經提醒聯邦政府留意「忍者視訊」與另外9個電影串流網站。它們同時關閉。聯邦政府動員數個部會出擊所欲傳達的訊息是,絕不任由違法的網路串流及下載百無禁忌。
But it has proved very difficult to reverse a pervasive cultural nonchalance about what constitutes intellectual property theft on the web. File-sharing, most of it illegal, still amounts to nearly a quarter of all consumer Internet traffic, according to Cisco Systems’ Visual Networking Index. And a recent report from Tru Optik, a media analytics firm, said that nearly 10 billion movies, television shows and other files were downloaded globally in the second quarter of 2014. Tru Optik estimates that 6 percent of those downloads were legal.
    然而事實證明,社會大眾對網路智財權侵犯行為的普遍漠視心理很難扭轉。根據思科公司公布的「視覺網絡指數」,違法居多的檔案分享仍占所有消費性網路流量的近1/4。媒體分析公司Tru Optik在最近發表的一項報告中指出,今年第2季,全球各地下載電影、電視節目及其他檔案的次數將近100億,其中約僅6%合法。
Congressional efforts in the United States, like a proposed Stop Online Piracy Act introduced in 2011, met with such strident objections from the technology industry that lawmakers backed down. The Copyright Alert System sends warnings when downloading of copyrighted content is detected . But last year, 1.3 million warnings were sent, a tiny fraction of what Tru Optik estimates to be 400 million illegal downloads in the United States each month.
    美國國會議員曾於2011年提出「遏止網路盜版」草案,最後因為科技業界強烈反對而做罷。「版權警示系統」會在偵測到網友下載有版權的內容時發出警訊。然而去年,它總共只發出130萬次警訊,僅及Tru Optik所估計,全美每個月非法下載次數4億次的一小部分。
In 2012, the United States seized and shut down Megaupload, the popular digital locker site that allowed people to share files like movies and music anonymously, and arrested its owner, Kim Dotcom, along with other high-level executives. They have been indicted by the United States on charges related to copyright infringement, although many legal experts are not sure if a case will ever go to court.
    熱門的數位鎖碼網站Megaupload使網友得以匿名分享電影與音樂檔案。2012年,美國政府將它查扣、關閉,同時逮捕它的所有人金.達康及數名高階主管。雖然許多法律專家不確定法院是否會受理,美國政府仍然以數項與侵犯版權有關的罪名起訴他們。
The motion picture group says it is not pursuing any new legislation to crack down on copyright infringement online, focusing instead on educating consumers about legal streaming options. The task, though, is “ at this point, never-ending,” said Michael D. Robinson, a group executive. He added, “It is difficult to compete with free.”
    美國電影協會表示無意促使國會再立新法取締網路的版權侵害行為,而是希望能夠教育消費者瞭解並採用合法的串流選項。協會主管羅賓森表示,以目前來說,這是一項「無止盡的工作」,不過「很難與免費(內容)競爭」。
One study, by the American Assembly at Columbia University in New York, found that 70 percent of young adults had copied or downloaded music or video free and almost 30 percent got most of their collections that way. The pervasive cultural norm, especially among younger people, is that illegal downloading, at least when it involves material from big corporations, is no big deal.
    紐約哥倫比亞大學泛美大會調查發現,70%的年輕成人曾經免費拷貝、下載音樂或影像,將近30%的人以這種方式取得他們大部分的收集品。普遍的文化規範(尤其是較年輕人們之間)是,至少涉及來自大企業的材料時,違法下載沒什麼大不了。
Andres Monroy-Hernandez, a social computing researcher at Microsoft Research, studied attitudes around ownership on collaborative, user-generated websites. He found that young Internet users became angry when peers used their works without permission, but didn’t see a problem in lifting images from shows or movies for use in their own work. “The farther removed you feel from the source,” he said, “the more likely you are to disregard the copyright and the intellectual property.”
    孟洛伊-艾南德茲是微軟研究公司的社會電腦應用研究員,在研究人們對使用者集體創造網站的所有權態度之後發現,如果別人未經允許就使用他們的工作成果,年輕的網友會很不高興,為了自己而擅自取用節目或電影中的影像則沒有問題。他說:「你覺得與來源距離越遠,越可能無視於版權與智財權。」
There is another obstacle to stopping illegal downloads, said Andre Swanston, the chief executive of Tru Optik, the media analytics firm. People want access to everything, anytime, and there is little to stop them from having it. Even combining Netflix, Amazon Prime and other such services, “that is still less content available legally than illegally,” he said. “The popularity of piracy has nothing to do with cost — it is all about access.”
    Tru Optik執行長史旺斯頓表示,遏止非法下載還有另一障礙。人們很想隨時接近並取得任何內容,而且很難阻止他們這麼做。他說,即使結合影片串流平台Netflix、亞馬遜的Prime與其他類似服務,「可以合法取得的內容還是少於違法」。他表示:「違法下載普遍與成本無關。取得才是關鍵。」
Peter Eckersley of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit , said the law should shift its focus to making sure that copyright holders are paid for their work, rather than trying to stymie how people gain access to it. That kind of solution, he said, would create different priorities that go beyond chasing smalltime pirates like Ms. Beshara.
    非營利機構電子前線基金會的艾克史雷表示,法律應該將重點自阻止人們取得版權內容,轉移至確保版權所有人得到報酬。他說,如此解決可使優先處理的事務有所不同,而不只是取締貝夏拉之類涉及違法下載的小咖。
After she spent 16 months in prison for conspiracy and criminal copyright infringement, Ms. Beshara still argued that the movie business was so big that skimming a little did not hurt anybody. Her site, she said, operated in a “gray area.”
    貝夏拉因為陰謀與非法侵犯版權等罪名而入監16個月。她出獄後還是說,電影產業規模龐大,違法下載一小部分不會傷害任何人。她又說,她的網站在「灰色地帶」運作。
Recalling the “old days” of NinjaVideo, she said, “I would never take it back.”
    她談到「忍者視訊」的「舊時光」時說:「我無怨無悔。」

  • 每日英語跟讀 Ep.925: About SKorea - 南韓航空公司利潤與怕病毒的洗錢
每日英語跟讀 Ep.925: About SKorea - How major South Korean airlines made profits during pandemic

South Korea’s flag carriers Korean Air and Asian Airlines surprised the market last week by posting an operating profit in the second quarter, while major airlines across the world suffered heavy losses due to the pandemic.
    南韓的載旗航空公司「大韓航空」和「韓亞航空」上週公布第2季出現營業利潤,出乎市場意料。與此同時,世界各地主要航空公司則因全球大流行疾病而蒙受嚴重虧損。
Korean Air reported an operating profit of 148.5 billion won while Asiana saw its figure top 100 billion won, both owing to their robust cargo businesses.
    韓航報告營業利潤為1485億韓元,韓亞航則超過1000億韓元,均歸功於它們強勁的貨運業務。
"The performance of both airlines is commendable as they responded quickly. I was skeptical when I first heard Korean Air’s decision to deploy passenger jets for their cargo service. It looks like it’s worked while other airlines didn’t consider the option," said Hurr Hee-young, a professor at Korea Aerospace University.
    「韓國航空大學」教授許喜寧說,「這兩家航空公司的表現,都值得稱許,因為它們反應很快。當我一開始聽到韓航運用客機從事貨運服務時,我抱持懷疑態度。看來這奏效了,而其他航空公司並未考慮到這個選項」。

    S. Korean tries washing money over virus fears, suffers loss 損失慘重 害怕病毒的南韓民眾「洗錢」
Money laundering is not a good idea, as a South Korean found out when he or she put banknotes in a washing machine to remove possible traces of the coronavirus.
    當一名南韓民眾將鈔票放入洗衣機,想洗掉可能殘留的冠狀病毒時,他/她發現「洗錢」不是個好辦法。
The person living in Ansan city, and only identified by family name Eom, placed an unspecified amount of 50,000-won bills in a washing machine.
    這位住在安山市、僅知姓嚴的民眾,將不知數量的5萬韓元鈔票放入洗衣機。
Under bank rules on the exchange of damaged, mutilated and contaminated banknotes, the person was provided with the new currency totaling about 23 million won.
    根據銀行的毀損、殘破及受污鈔票交換規定,該名民眾獲得總值約2300萬韓元(約62萬台幣)新鈔。
Bank official said the number of 50,000-won bills the bank exchanged at half value was 507. The bank doesn’t count the number of bills that it cannot exchange because damage is too big. It was said the loss was considerable.
    銀行官員說,銀行以半價交換的5萬韓元鈔票有507張,但並未數算無法交換的鈔票數量,因為損壞太嚴重。據說,損失很可觀。

  • 文法跟讀 In-Tense Ep.059: 及物動詞 Transitive Verbs
Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I am your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 59. Well guys, we have started with verbs and we started with action verbs. Now action verbs are easy and they are divided into 2 parts transitive and Intransitive verbs.

Now what we're going to do today in this episode is just look at transitive verbs. Okay, and first let's start with what are transitive verbs? They are action verbs that have a direct object. “The dog ate the bone.” Your verb is ate, and what did it eat? The bone is the object for it to eat, but sometimes we just ask something like: “Who called?” There is no object, it’s just somebody called. When you answer, your answer might have another person like an object, “Oh, Mary called.” So now we know, right? So, we're going to be looking at transitive verbs. Now again do not panic at, the end of the day, all of these verbs, action verbs, linking verbs, transitive, intransitive, are not important, just as long as you can recognise what the verb is. What is the verb we're looking at? What is that thing? Oh, it's a verb. What's that? That's a noun. What is that? That's a pronoun.

As long as we can identify what it is, we don't really have to worry about its specifics, because you know, at the end of the day, when we speak, nobody is that specific unless you are into grammar in a major way. Okay, so we're going to be looking at transitive verbs today, and those are the action verbs that have an object, so most of the time we use those right? Yeah, “I rang the bell.” What did I ring? The bell, rang and the bell are connected there's your object. Okay, so let's do some examples and in this I will also be underlining them, in the script of course, so let's get started with our examples.

Well there you go guys. Just a quick introduction to transitive action verbs. Again, don't worry about it, just be able to spot the verbs so you'll notice a lot of them. “Is your phone is broken?” The phone is the object, right? Anyway, keep practising and I will catch you in the next episode, bye!

  • 精選詞彙播客 Vocab Ep.069: 特斯拉市值超越豐田Tesla overtakes Toyota and Exxon’s in market value
    Summary:
Tesla’s overtook Toyota as the world’s most valuable carmaker recently as a sign that investors are believing more and more in an energy transition away from fossil fuels. On the day that Tesla exceeded Toyota in market value, Tesla shares rose 3.5% in intraday trading, giving it a market capitalization of US207.2billion (Toyota’s were USD201.9billion). Tesla made 103,000 vehicles in the last quarter, only about 4% of the 2.4 million made by Toyota. So, by 2025, we should be able to see electric vehicle account for 10% of all global passenger vehicles.
